Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello officially announces presidential ambition

Kogi state Governor Yahaya Bello has officially declared interest in running for the presidency of Nigeria.

The declaration was made in Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja on Saturday.

Prior to his declaration of interest to contest in the presidential election, Bello has been speculated to be interested in being the number citizen of the country.

The occasion was witnessed by some eminent Nigerians like Senator Jonathan Zwingina, Femi Fani-Kayode, among others.

Speaking, Zwingina described the Presidential aspirant as a detribalized Nigerian, who governs Kogi with appointees from other states.

He added that the country needs someone like Yahya Bello

“Governor uprooted insecurity from Kogi, the state would have been a breeding ground for kidnapping and banditry, but for his leadership skills.”

Yayaha Bello has declared his interest in presidency under the auspices of All Progressive Congress (APC)

Yahaya Bello joins Bola Tinubu and Dave Umahi to declare interest in the number 1 seat under the auspices of APC.

APC National Convention: All contestants are working in unity – Bello

Governor of Kogi State and Chairman, Security Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention, Yahaya Bello has said all the contestants for the convention are working in unity and in the same direction.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Bello made this known on Tuesday in Abuja, saying his security committee and delegates are working assiduously toward the success of the convention, and that the party will come out stronger after the national convention slated for Saturday.

“Every Committee just like the security committee, all the leaders, all the delegates, members and stalwarts of the APC are enthusiastic, gearing and working assiduously towards a successful National Convention of the APC.

“So everybody is working assiduously to ensure we have a successful and hitch-free exercise come 26th of March 2022.

“Our party will go into a convention and come off very strong. We are meeting and putting heads together to ensure that we come up very strongly so nothing is stopping us from going ahead from conducting this exercise.

“As we speak right now, all the contestants are talking in unison, and leaders are working accordingly and all other members including delegates are moving in the same direction.

“Nigerians are even giving us all the maximum support that we require. That is why you can see the calibre of people that are involved in this all-important exercise. It is going to be more successful than any other convention held in Nigeria,” Bello assured.

…points accusation finger at Govs Bello, Uzodinma, Abiodun

    …demands probe of their involvement

A former Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Dr Salihu Lukman, has identified Governors Yahaya Bello, Hope Uzodimma and Dapo Abiodun of allegedly plotting with Mai Mala Buni in the destabilization of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls the ruling party has been in an oscillating mode to conduct a convention without end.

To worsen the already not too good situation with the party, INEC on Thursday turned down an invitation to conduct the party’s NEC meeting declaring that only Buni and his secretary are qualified to conduct such an emergency NEC.

But the ex-DG in a statement on Friday without mincing words declared there are identified collaborators with Buni plotting to bring APC to its kneels.

He warned that the APC stands on the path of losing the next election because of the crisis already crippling its capacity to hold a national convention to elect substantive party officials.

Lukman stressed that anyone who loves Mai Mala Buni should be more worried about protecting his honour as a political leader by ensuring that he doesn’t become a letdown who stands opposed to the majority decisions of party leaders and members.

He said if Mai Mala Buni shares the vision of all the founding leaders of the party, he would be willing to make every personal sacrifice to demonstrate his support for the decisions of the party.

Lukman contrasted Mai Mala Buni to ex-leaders of the APC including Chief Bisi Akande, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Chief Tony Momoh of blessed memory, Chief John Oyegun and Adams Oshiomhole

His words: “There are known collaborators of His Excellency Mai Mala who have colluded with him to ensure that all attempts to organise the APC National Convention are blocked.

“Three Governors who are known and must also be called upon to account for their roles in undermining decisions to organise the APC National Convention are His Excellency Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, His Excellency Hope Uzodinma of Imo State and His Excellency Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.

“There are other party leaders, including Sen Uzo Kalu who have actively supported His Excellency Mai Mala to undermine the decision to organise the National Convention of the party.”

Lukman stressed that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for March 17 should initiate processes of a disciplinary hearing in line with provisions of the APC Constitution to sanction all these leaders if found guilty.

The traditional ruler gave the commendation when he visited Gov. Bello in the Government house ahead of the coronation and presentation of the Staff of Office to the

The Olu specifically commended Bello for the visible development projects which he said he saw on his way to the state.

“Visiting the state for the first time was more of a homecoming for me, where part of the origin of the Itsekiri Kingdom could be traced to.

“The significance of the Kogi as a confluence state where the two great rivers, Benue and Niger meet will bring in more blessings and prosperity to the state.

“Everybody knows that I am the King of waters. And since here is where the two Rivers meet here, I use my authority, my great office to declare that Kogi is a prosperous state, it is a blessed state, it is a productive state.

“And the blessings that God intends to emanate from here will grow across the nations, and we release that today,” he said.

The Olu thanked the people of Kogi for their hospitality.

Responding Bello thanked the traditional ruler for the visit and for accepting the invitation to attend the coronation of the Attah of Igala.

Bello also congratulated Olu on his installation.

“Your coronation as the Olu of Warri was a great development for the current generation to see young people vested with such responsibilities and powers.

“When the kingmakers chose you to ascend the throne of your ancestors, my hope, my dreams, my aspirations, my desire, my wish for this country was elated.

“And I know that this generation at this time is going to be blessed. They could not have been a better selection than yourself.

“Let me use this opportunity to congratulate you, to congratulate the people of Delta and the Kingdom at large to have a monarch of my own generation as a young person.

“When you were talking, I began to feel the blessing already because I know the words of our ancestors are coming forth.

“Every prayer of our ancestors coming through you from the heavens shall be accepted by each and every one of us.

  • INEC expresses satisfaction with FCT Area Councils Poll

INEC expresses satisfaction with FCT Area Councils Poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given a pass mark on the conduct of Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election.

Mr Yahaya Bello, the INEC FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) made this known in Abuja, adding that the poll commenced early in most polling units in the territory.

“It is our collective gratitude to that Almighty God that after all this time that we have been preparing for the election, it has been successful. We started since March 31, 2021 when we gave the notice of the election.

“Between then and now every other programme to do with this election has been completed.

“Today, we are at the poll, we want to assure people that by the grace of God this election will be fair, free, credible, acceptable and inclusive.

“The poll has opened, all over the FCT we have feedback that people have been casting their votes,” he said.

Bello said that reports received so far from the field have indicated that there have been no hitches.

He said that the commission had stationed Registration Area Centre (RAC) technicians in locations to ensure rapid response in case of breakdown of the Bi-modal Voting Accreditation System (BVAS).

He said that it took only two minutes to accredit voters with the BVAS adding that all the commission’s facilities were working perfectly.

He said that all INEC’s facilities were being secured by security operatives so there was no need for fear and urged voters to come out and vote for candidates of their choice.

Mr Terungwa Awuhe, Coordinating Supervisor, FCT, Election Operation Support Centre (EOSC) said that the centre was a platform for managing elections.

Awuhe said that the centre was one of the innovations introduced by the commission.

“It comprises of three tools, the election operation support centre, the election risk management and the election management support.

“Here what we do basically is that we track our compliance to the commission’s planned activities for election day commencing from the eve of the election up to coalition and declaration of results.

“We also track threats, we receive reports of threats in the field and we provide intervention mobilise response to those areas,” he said.

Awuhe, however, said that so far no negative report had been received.

Some voters expressed mixed feelings on the conduct of the election.

Mr Danjuma Tanko, a voter at the Dankogi polling unit in Apo said that the BVAS has been slowing down accreditation process.

Tanko, who after several futile attests called on INEC to be more proactive in electoral matters.

“The experience here was that there was a problem with the card reading, the voters are ever ready to vote, we have been here since 6.a.m.

“It is surprising that in spite of the assurance by INEC, that there won’t be any hitches, yet we experiencing it,” he said.

Ms Hassana Jonathan, said that although she came as early as 6a.m., she has not been able to vote because accreditation was slow at the beginning but it picked up later.

Polling units visited in Karmo, Saburi, Life camp and Gwarinpa witnessed large turnout of voters.

Mountain Facing Yahaya Bello – By Azu Ishiekwene

    By Azu Ishiekwene

Even though the All Progressives Congress (APC) has repeatedly denied zoning the position of chairman to the North Central, there’s hardly any credible analysis which does not feature candidates from the zone in the first three spots.

Days to the party’s first national convention in four years, there is growing public interest in the outcome of the convention, because how it ends may not only indicate if the party is over, it might also provide an indication of who the party’s flag bearer would be for next year’s presidential election.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been a bit more open in dealing with this demon. The mood in the party is to throw the thing open. After decades of treating zoning as sacrosanct, stalwarts in the opposition appear to have seen the light, declaring that irrespective of where the party’s chairman may come from, the presidential ticket would go to the best candidate, sparking a rash of interests across the six zones.

Despite mixed reactions about zoning in the ruling party, no one can say for sure that it would follow the opposition’s example. If the APC plays the zoning card on February 26, as is widely expected, and concedes the chairmanship to the North Central, that could significantly complicate the presidential ambition of the most visible contender from the zone – Governor Yahaya Bello – even before he has formally and publicly declared his intention to run.

One of the earliest candidates to show interest in the race, Bello stuck his head out when those considered to be heavyweights – or ‘owners of Nigeria’, to borrow Dele Momodu’s remix of Oliver De Coque (Ana Enwe Obodo), were still lying low.

For many who thought his ambition was an insolent joke – and that includes me – it would be interesting to see how he rallies after the party’s convention, especially if a candidate from his zone, the North Central, gets the party chair.

But he thinks he can get it – and will – irrespective of where the party fetches its chairman. In its nearly eight years of existence, neither the APC nor the legacy parties that formed it, has chosen both its chairman and presidential candidate from the same zone.

In the last 23 years, in fact, the only major party that has bucked the trend is the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2003, when the party presented Odumegwu Ojukwu as its presidential candidate, even though Chekwas Okorie was chairman. But that was understandable: APGA is a regional party.

The APC has, in fact, treated zoning with the same fetishism with which it has religion, insisting that its flag bearer and his deputy, for example, cannot be of the same faith. Yet, Bello insists that neither zoning nor faith is a mountain too high to climb. When the issue came up at a recent meeting, he said that whichever way the party sliced it, it would still fall to him, something which one of those present described as audacious, if not dangerous optimism, but a view he disagreed with.

“You know what they say about two dogs fighting over a bone,” Bello said. “The third simply picks it up without much effort. That is what is going to happen with the APC presidential ticket. Watch.”

Perhaps, and that, with a capital P. Anyone familiar with the wheeling and dealing, the horse trading, the incredible cash outlay (some have estimated it at nearly N10 billion), and the sheer jiggery pokery involved in selecting the presidential flag bearer of a major political party in Nigeria, might agree that it’s not a boy’s playground.

So far, in the APC alone, the heavyweights range from Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and from Governor Kayode Fayemi to Governor David Umahi, Senator Orji Uzo Kalu and Rochas Okorocha. Even the Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, has been mentioned. And in the last few days, there has been a renewed buzz that the APC is paving the way for former President Goodluck Jonathan to decamp from the PDP and potentially carry the party’s flag.

It is against this line-up of veterans, hardened by the tempestuous and treacherous waters of Nigerian politics that Rookie Bello would now go to war and hope to succeed. If he is banking on luck, the cousin of hope, perhaps he has a reason to do so.

Seven years ago, during the APC governorship primary, Bello came a distant second to the late Abubakar Audu before two crucial events changed the course of Kogi politics. Luck played a major role, which he is hoping might repeat itself.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the state’s governorship election inconclusive and then Audu, who was already declared winner in majority of local government areas, died on November 22, 2015, before a scheduled date for a rerun.

Audu’s party, the APC, had two choices before it: to replace Audu with his running mate, James Faleke, or with the runner-up to Audu during its primary, Bello. APC went for the latter, and the dynamics of Kogi politics have not remained the same. Although Faleke protested the decision and challenged it in court, his grievances fell on deaf ears at party level and his legal action was unsuccessful.

This time, Bello insists he is banking on much more than hope or luck. Age, he says, is also on his side and would be a serious issue in the next election, at which his backers respond with thunderous chants of, “It’s youth o’clock! It’s youth o’clock!!”

Bello, the youngest governor in Nigeria and the only governor to be born after the Nigerian civil war, has since completed his first term and was reelected in November 2019 for a second term, which he must now juggle with his presidential ambition.

Yet, age is neither a measure of folly nor is it a guarantee of performance. Bello insists that, against the odds, he has performed. The first governor from Ebira, a minority within minority ethnic groups, he said he has exorcised ghost workers from the payroll, which cost the state N213 billion in 13 years of leakages, cleared outstanding backlog of salaries which amounted to about N18 billion, smashed criminal gangs and made the state safer, and established a reputation of publishing the monthly accounts on the state’s website.

And on top of this, he prides himself on being a party man to the core, with inside track to the king and also the kingmakers (except, of course, a notable one located to the North of his state, whom he said is a sworn enemy).

While he thinks his record qualifies him to run for a higher office, his opponents think that it is largely because of the same record that he is unfit to run. His face-off with EFCC over the alleged diversion of N20 billion bailout state funds, his bizarre and unpopular posture on vaccines and cattle grazing routes, and his exuberant, almost gangster-like political style, cultivated in his early days in office, are often cited as proof that he is unsuitable for higher office.

Bello insists this baggage is an invention of his enemies, “especially powerful vested interests” who are afraid that his candidacy would end the era of business as usual. “They know I’m not beholden to any special interests, they know that they have nothing on me because I’m a child of destiny; I’m focused on serving the mass of the people,” he said. “You call it baggage; I call it a panic attack.”

Those for or against Bello won’t have to wait for too long before they find out whether there is any reserve left in the tank of his luck. By the time the party’s convention is over in about two weeks, it would be clearer if the governor has remade his own luck after six years or if, like lightning, his luck only struck once.

He expressed optimism that the move by Gov. Yahaya Bello, had brought innovations and remodelling of secondary schools in the state, with a view to making the state regain its lost glory in Education.

He noted that with the state having two Universities, there was a dare need to adequately prepare students in secondary schools to fit into the vision of the governor for quality assurance and become self reliant.

Jones described education as the only guarantee for the future, noting that the emergency system had also manifested in several ongoing renovation and rehabilitation projects in the Central Senatorial District and helped to reposition the education system in the state.

He emphasised the need for the state to move in the direction of science, technology, English and Mathematics, for it not to “be left behind in the new wave of educational development, hence the declaration of a State of Emergency on the sector”.

He described the commitment of Bello to education as unprecedented, adding that the state government was conscious of the shortfall of teachers in secondary schools and making efforts to fill the vacancies occasioned by retirements, transfers and the civil service reforms.

Jones, however solicited the support of stakeholders to the success of the adoption and mentorship programme, saying that the state government could not do it alone while calling on teachers and students to maintain discipline.

  • BREAKING: Hidden N19.3 billion Kogi salary bail-out funds returned to CBN

BREAKING: Hidden N19.3 billion Kogi salary bail-out funds returned to CBN

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said the sum of N19.3 billion salary bail-out funds allegedly hidden by the Kogi State government has been returned to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the EFCC as saying the CBN acknowledged the receipt of the said amount in a letter referenced DFD/DIR/CON/EXT/01/099 and dated 9th November, 2021.

This was contained in a statement signed and released on Friday by Wilson Uwujaren, Head, Media and Publicity of the antigraft agency.

According to the statement, the return of the money to the apex bank was in compliance with the October 15, 2021 Order of a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos State.

The court had directed the unfreezing of the Kogi State Salary Bail-out account to enable Sterling Bank to remit the balance in the account to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

TNG reports Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke gave the Order pursuant to an application filed by the EFCC.

The statement reads: “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has acknowledged the receipt of the sum of N19,333,333,333.36 (Nineteen Billion, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Million, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Thousand, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Naira, Thirty-six Kobo) recovered by the EFCC from the Kogi State Salary Bail-out account domiciled in Sterling Bank Plc.

“This effectively puts to rest the campaign of misinformation and unconscionable denials by the Kogi State Government that no fund was recovered from its bail out account.

“The apex bank in a letter referenced, DFD/DIR/CON/EXT/01/099 and dated 9th November, 2021 informed the Executive Chairman, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa that it has received the money.

“The letter reads in part: “We refer to your letter dated November 5, 2021 with Ref. No: CR:3000/EFCC/LS/CMU/REC-STE/VOL.4/047 on the above subject and wish to confirm the details of the receipt of the amount as stated below: Bank: Sterling Bank Plc; Amount: N19, 333, 333,333.36; Date of receipt: 04 November, 2021”.

“The return of the money to the apex bank is in compliance with the October 15, 2021 Order of a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi Lagos directing the unfreezing of the Kogi State Salary Bail-out account to enable Sterling Bank to remit the balance in the account to the Central Bank of Nigeria. Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke gave the Order pursuant to an application filed by the EFCC.

“The Commission had told the court that the management of Sterling Bank Plc, where the account was domiciled had acknowledged the existence of the said account with the staggering sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 in its books.

“The Commission further brought to the attention of the court that “The sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 is still standing in the credit of the account frozen”, adding that “the management of Sterling Bank PIc, has, pursuant to a letter dated 15 September, 2021, signed by its Managing Director, indicated intention to return the total sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 back to the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

“The EFCC prayed the court that it “is expedient for the instant suit to be discontinued and the account unfrozen to enable the management of Sterling Bank PIc effect the transfer/ return of the sum of the sum of N19, 333, 333, 333.36 back to the coffer of the Central Bank of Nigeria , where the said bailout funds was disbursed.”

“The transfer has put paid to any further controversy regarding source and ownership of the funds and most importantly, aborted the funds dissipation.

“On August 31, 2021, Justice Tijani Garba Ringim, a vacation Judge, had ordered the freezing of the account, following an ex-parte application filed by the EFCC.

“The EFCC, in a 13-paragraph affidavit in support of the ex-parte application, had stated that it received a credible and direct intelligence, which led to the tracing of the funds reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities in account No. 0073572696 domiciled in Sterling Bank, Plc with the name Kogi State Salary Bailout Account.

“After listening to the EFCC application, Justice Ringim on August 31, 2021, ordered the freezing of the account and directed the publication of the order in a national newspaper by the EFCC”.
