2022 Budget: Kogi Gov. Bello increases education allocation to 30%

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi says his Administration is increasing budgetary allocation to education sector from 20 per cent to 30 per cent in the 2022 fiscal year.

Bello stated this in Lokoja at the grand finale of the four-week Inter-School Quiz and Essay Competition for public Secondary Schools in the state, sponsored by Pharmacist Abdukareem Asuku Youth Empowerment Foundation (PAAYEF).

The Governor, who had in 2021 fiscal year, gave 20 per cent budgetary allocation to education sector, on Saturday, stressed the importance of education as the bedrock of development, and assured that both the infrastructural development and wellbeing of teachers and students would be enhanced for maximum productivity.

According to him, as a beneficiary of public educational system and have been blessed to the level of being a governor of the state, I will have no cause than to raise the bar for the future generations.

He vowed to make public schools in the state very attractive to the young ones, stressing that education remained one of the critical thematic areas of his administration.

He noted that the State Education Law had forbidden pupils from roaming the streets during school hours, and promised to deploy enough resources to the sector that will make private schools unattractive to students and their parents.

He restated his determination to make Kogi attain number one position in education in the country, and assured that government was working hard to make educational institutions in the state free from bandits and kidnappers.

”No child during my tenure, will be abducted from schools or anywhere across the state. I will not tolerate politicisation of security in the state.

”We have put measures in place to safeguard our pupils and their teachers and I call on stakeholders to join the crusade,” he said.

Bello commended PAAYEF’s founder, Pharm. Abdukareem Asuku, who is also his Chief of Staff, for the gesture in supporting and boosting education in the state

He enjoined his appointees and elected members in the administration to contribute to the development of education in the state.

Earlier, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Wemi Jones, noted that Kogi was rated 28 position in WAEC result in 2018, but noted that the State had worked hard to change the narrative by upscaled to 14 position in the last WAEC rating.

He assured the people that the state would not rest on its oars until it had won first position in all public examinations in the country, urging all stakeholders to contribute their quota to the development of educational sector.

Jones expressed excitement with the performance of the students, noting that the exercise had opened up some challenges facing the sector and promised to tackle them head-on.

”Giving necessary encouragement, the students can compete favourably with their counterparts nationally and internationally,” Jones said.

He urged corporate organisations, groups and individuals to support the sector in various forms ranging from financial, old students’ contributions, and for communities to protect and preserve education infrastructures in their domains.

Speaking, the PAAYEF founder, said the competition was his modest contribution to raise confidence and consciousness of students of public schools in the state.

He explained that the four-week events had three schools qualified from each senatorial district, that emerged as zonal winners, held between Sept. 25 to Oct. 9, 2021.

He noted that the students were tested in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and General papers, adding that inter school debate was introduced at the grand finale.

Saint Augustine College Kabba beat their opponent, Ebira Community Secondary School (ECSS) Ogaminana, to emerge the overall winner.

A student, Esther Itopa, from Harmony Secondary School Lokoja, the only private school featured in the event won the spelling Bee.

Tijani Sadiq from Demonstration Secondary School, Onikuko, Ogaminana, won first position in the written test, and received a full university scholarship from the foundation.

Musa Alhassan from Government Science Secondary School, Okenya and Sam Abdullazeez from ECSS Ogaminana, who took second and third positions respectively, would have scholarship for their secondary school education, including payment of WAEC or NECO fees for Alhassan who got second.

Some outstanding students in the competition received consolation prizes.

N20bn salary bailout funds: EFCC making deliberate attempts to malign Yahaya Bello’s integrity – Kogi Government

The Kogi State government has threatened to take legal action against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Commissioner of Information and Communication in the state, Kingsley Fanwo, made the threat on Thursday while briefing reporters at the Kogi Liaison Office in Abuja.

He accused the EFCC of a deliberate attempt to malign the integrity of the state governor, Yahaya Bello, over an alleged N20 billion salary bailout funds said to be in fixed deposit at a commercial bank.

The commissioner described as false and malicious the claims by the anti-graft agency that the governor did not disburse the said bailout funds released by the Federal Government in 2019 for payment of salary arrears owed civil servants in the state.

Rather, he informed reporters at the briefing that the state government disbursed the said funds since October 2019.

Fanwo’s briefing comes two days after the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court issued an order freezing the Kogi State Salary Bailout Account domiciled in Sterling Bank over a N20 billion loan obtained from the bank.

The presiding judge, Justice Tijjani Ringim, held that the order would subsist pending the conclusion of an investigation or possible prosecution by the EFCC.

In its argument, the anti-graft agency had explained that the loan was meant to augment the payment of salary and running cost of the state.

It alleged that the state government, however, kept the money in an interest-yielding account with Sterling Bank.

The EFCC also claimed that as of April 1, 2021, the balance standing to the credit of the said fixed deposit account was N19,333,333,333.36.

It added that it was still in the process of tracing what the sum of N666,666,666.64 – a shortfall of the said sum – was used for.

2023: How Nigerian youths can wrestle power from Nigeria’s elders – Yahaya Bello

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi on Tuesday called on the youth to make conscious efforts at “wrestling” power from the elders in order to assume the mantle of the country’s leadership in 2023.

Bello made the call on Tuesday in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun, at a conference, themed: “Youths Own The Power”, organised by a group known as Afenifere for Collective Transformation (ACT).

Bello, who spoke through the Secretary to the Kogi State Government, Mrs Folasade Ayoade, urged the youth to be more organised for a united front ahead of 2023 polls.

According to him, youths have generally demonstrated non-challant attitude toward assuming the nation’s headship and advised them to be courageous and be ready to wrestle power from the older generation.

Bello also urged the youth to shun passivity and numbness concerning sensitive leadership positions in the country.

“Nigerian youths have for long been indifferent and have not shown serious and strong determination to take over the presidency and have continued to abandon it to the elders who have turned the position to exclusive right.

“Our elders have continued to be at ease during the presidential polls because the youths seemed to have ceded the position to them,” he said.

The Director-General of ACT, Tolu Ajayi, in his remarks, described Bello as “ a detribalised Nigerian youth who could be trusted with powers.”

He expressed the hope that Bello would take the nation to an enviable heights if given a chance in 2023.

COVID-19: You are a man of faith – Pastor Adeboye tells Gov Yahaya Bello

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye has described Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State as a man of faith over his handling of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Onogwu Muhammed, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bello made this known in a statement on Saturday.

He quoted Pastor Adeboye to have said during a visit that Governor Bello’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic was an inspiring indication of stoic faith and a rare demonstration of faith from a political leader.

According to the statement, the RCCG G.O. reportedly assured Governor Bello that they would continue to offer prayers for the Governor, the leadership of the state and the people of the state at large.

Applauding Bello for his balanced approach to governance, especially as it relates to religious plurality, according to the statement, Adeboye praised the Governor for tolerance and inclusiveness to the extent that the first-ever Chapel in the Kogi State Government house was built by the Governor.

“We have heard and seen your show of faith in God, particularly in dealing with the Coronavirus. It takes the man of faith to have acted the way you did and we are very very pleased with you.

“We have also heard the news of how you’ve been relating to people of every faith to the extent that you built the first chapel in the government house, Lokoja, we are delighted.

“I want to assure you that we will keep on praying for you, we will keep on praying for the people of your State and I believe that the Almighty God will answer our prayers for you. Thank you for granting us the audience,” the statement quoted Adeboye to have said.

In his response, Governor Bello said the visit of the clergy was a gift and that he was delighted to be hosting a father figure who served as a role model to many across the country, himself inclusive.

Governor Bello asserted that It was evil of any leader to continually do wrong without recourse to natural justice, adding that in Kogi State under his leadership, considering the circumstances surrounding how he became governor and his election for a second term, the resolve is to do good by providing credible and impacting governance.

He further stated that his administration’s strive to ensure ethnic, religious balance, fighting criminality and other modest achievements were only natural and mandatory obligations expected of leaders bequeathed with the people’s mandate.

The Governor tasked the revered and venerable clergy to continue to pray for the country, the state, both leadership and followership stating that all faith at this very period should harmonise to seek divine intervention for the nation instead of beating the drum of divisions and war.

Gov Bello appoints speech impaired former cleaner as aide

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has appointed a speech impaired youth and former cleaner, Peter Aliyu, as his Senior Special Assistant on Sanitation.

This was made known in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Muhammed on Sunday in Abuja.

The appointment, Muhammed said, was part of Bello’s efforts to foster inclusion in governance.

The appointment is also coming on the heels of President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts to ensure more inclusion of persons with disabilities and the establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.

According to Muhammed, the appointment of Aliyu, a former cleaner under the Geemoney Cleaning Scheme of the governor, further illustrates his compassionate attribute.

“His appointment was announced on Wednesday alongside other new government appointees of government in a press release signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Folashade Arike Ayoade.

“The young man’s appointment came on the heels of his excellency’s observation of the man’s consistency, diligence and dedication which also endeared the new appointee to many other individuals who have hailed his appointment.

“Governor Bello has always been known for his non-discrimination approach to leadership and how he has ensured that individuals of different class, group and even social strata were meted equal treatment across board.

“The governor in his usual disposition did not consider Mr Aliyu’s disability as an hindrance for him to effectively serve but rather as a means to enlist him and prove to the world that in disabilities lie abilities as well,” he said.

He said the gesture by the governor was not the first of its kind as he had in the past given special consideration to people with disabilities.

This, he said, was by engaging them actively in his government and even signing bills that would enhance their welfare.

2023: Fani-kayode under fire for endorsing ‘mentally unfit’ Yahaya Bello for president

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode is under severe criticism on Twitter for recommending Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello.

Some of the outraged critics recalled how Fani-Kayode once described Yahaya Bello as a politician whose mental faculties are non-functional.

In one of his tweets dated April 5, 2018. Fani-Kayode had described Yahaya Bello as ‘an accursed slave’ whose mental faculties are non-functional.

The North Central Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had asked Bello to relinquish his desire to run for the position of president come 2023 after he declared his interest.

But reacting on Sunday, Fani-Kayode took to his Twitter page to say it is absurd for some Nigerians to kick against the North Central producing the next Nigerian President.

He noted that Nigeria needs strong and decisive leadership, a generational change and a bridge-builder.

“The idea that Gov. Yahaya Bello should not run for the Presidency & that the NC zone, which has never produced a democratically-elected President, ought to settle for another position is absurd,” Fani-Kayode said.

  • How Kogi handles security challenges – Yahaya Bello

How Kogi handles security challenges – Yahaya Bello

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi says his administration has succeeded in providing adequate security in the state by enhancing citizens’ involvement in the fight against insecurity.

Represented by the state Deputy Governor Edward Onoja, Bello made this observation at the Annual Lecture/Fellow’s Night 2021 of the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies on Saturday in Abuja.

He said that his government, being youth-oriented, had been able to involve young minds in decision making on security issues.

He observed that the state was confronted with several security challenges prior to his assumption of office as governor in 2015.

He said that he assigned security roles to more than 5,000 young men and women in local governments to collaborate with security agencies and ensure adequate security in their communities.

“Some of the measures taken by the government to tackle insecurity include clearing of highway bushes, equipping security agencies, engagement of youths in vigilance groups and incorporation of hunters into anti-kidnapping squad,” he said.

He noted that his administration also involved citizens in the fight against insecurity through involvement of local government chairmen and traditional rulers in the security arrangement of the state.

He said that the kidnapping of his mother provided an opportunity for him to work hard to rid the state of all forms of criminality and make it safe for the citizens.

“Upon my assumption of office as executive governor of Kogi, I saw it as a divine opportunity among others to rid the state of all crimes and criminality.

“To achieve this goal, we decided to take a simple steps to frontally tackle crime in our society.

“Some of which is highway vegetation control by clearing six metres in either side of the highway across the state.

“This simple initiative improved visibility for travellers and eliminated high impulse of kidnappers that usually pound on unsuspecting travellers around blind spots of the highways to execute their nefarious activities,” he said.

Bello announced that the state had bought and equipped no fewer than 200 security vehicles for the security agencies.

He said that the vehicles were strategically deployed across the state to collaborate with citizens to curb crimes.

He also said that the state invested in the use of technology to gather intelligence across the state as well as collaborate with responsible corporate entities in the state.

The former Director-General, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Prof. Ahmed Danfulani, said that no nation could progress where a group of individuals constituted themselves as threats to the national ssecurity.

Danfulani, who spoke on the theme: “Our National Security Predicaments: Implications for the Current Democratic Order”, said the success of national security was difficult to appreciate in a state of fear and uncertainty.

According to him, the average Nigerian has no idea of what is national security and people take issues of national with levity.

He called for collective effort in promoting the Nigeria project and promote its national security.

The Secretary, Governing Council, Institute of Security and Strategic Studies, Dr Danladi Abdulhameed, said that the global terrorism index for 2021 listed Nigeria as the third most terrorised countries in the world after Afghanistan and Iraq.

Abdulhameed said the classification was hinged on the fact that Nigeria had been in a state of war against terrorism, farmers/herdsmen clashes, banditry and Kidnapping.

He said that while terrorist attacks could occur anywhere in the world, insecurity had remained the greatest threat to Nigeria’s budding democracy.

He said that several challenges have continued to besiege the nation’s democratic system such as insecurity which has claimed the lives and livelihoods of civilians, foreigners, security personnel and threatened our socio-economic and political entity.

“It is on this note that we at the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies are committed to protecting our nation’s security so that the electorate shall have confidence in nascent democracy,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the institute inducted Gov. Yahaya Bello to fellowship and also bestowed on him the Security Personality of the Year 2021 Award.

Also inducted to the fellowship is the Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund), Prof. Suleiman Bogoro among others.
