What I told Tinubu in our meeting – Gowon

Retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon on Wednesday met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Following the meeting, Gowon urged Nigerians to give more time to the  President Tinubu-led administration, toward resolving the various challenges confronting the country.

He added that it was too early in the life of the administration to begin to resolve all the inherited crisis in different sectors.

“Well, I was telling him that no Nigerian leader that get there and will not have all the report of what is being said about him.

“But certainly, there’s no doubt from what one hears and what one sees on the various media. I think the government is trying its best to deal with the various problems of the country.

“Don’t you worry,  you will get criticised but people who get there know better than you know.

“I think all what one can say is that Nigerians, we’ve got to give the President time to get things really done. And it is too early to say absolute result, perfect result will be achieved now.”

Gowon said  the meeting with the President also centred on the issue of the challenges facing the ECOWAS subregions, adding that it must be settled amicably.

“Being the surviving leader, or founding fathers of the ECOWAS, I think we had to discuss some of his plans in order to see what can be done to bring the matter under control,” Gowon said.

He debunked claims on social media that he refused to attend an event organised by ECOWAS, adding that this was probably due to miscommunication.

“I think there was a miscommunication but then, it gave the opportunity for the  President to call me so that we can discuss what I was to do.”

Gowon snubs FG, ECOWAS’ invitation to speak on crises

The former Head of State and one of the founding fathers of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, General Yakubu Gowon, retd, has turned down invitation to wade into the crises bedeviling the regional body.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with ECOWAS Commission, had invited journalists to a “’press conference” with Gowon at ECOWAS Commission Headquarters, Abuja, scheduled for 12 noon.

He was expected to speak on the current state of affairs at the regional level, with regards to coups and subsequent threat by the Republic of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso to exit the organisation and perhaps, proffer lasting solutions to the challenge.

The three military juntas in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger on January 28, announced their intention to exit ECOWAS over allegation of the regional body becoming a threat to its members, being “under the influence of foreign powers and of betraying its founding principles.”

They equally accused the regional body of failing to support them in their fight against terrorism and insecurity, while imposing illegal, inhumane and irresponsible sanctions against them, following coups.

A day after, the leadership of the regional body expressed concern over the countries’ decision, worried that unelected leaders were engaging in a public posturing to deny their people the sovereign right to make fundamental choices.

ECOWAS has been calling on the three countries to return to civilian rule by imposing sanctions and denying them plans for lengthy democratic transitions.

Recently, the Mediation and Security Council, MSC, at the ministerial level, which held in Abuja, Nigeria, urged the aggrieved nations to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation.

Gowon solicits enabling laws for private schools

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has solicited an enabling law for private schools to grow the nation through education.

Speaking in Abuja at a Dinner/Award night to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Africa International College (AIC) and Africa Community School, Gowon said government alone could not provide support for every institution, but an enabling law would do a great deal for them.

The event which also featured a book launch, authored by the Executive Secretary of the School, Mrs Caroline Yakubu, has the theme: ”Celebrating Unlimited Grace.”

Gowon was represented at the occasion by his younger brother, Dauda Gowon.

“The private schools are there to help the nation grow through education, not flashy education but education that builds, not education that destroys but education that helps the nation grow.

“Government cannot afford to support every institution because it is not practicable but they should make enabling laws that will not tie their hands from doing many things they should be able to do.

“For example, if they want to have an e-library, is it difficult or easy, if they want to have a good scientific laboratory, is it easy or is it difficult.

“In other words, if the equipments are not manufactured in Nigeria, will they have any problems at the ports, such things are the assistance I expect the government to give institutions like this,” he said.

He also called on the government to address the issue of multiple taxation on private schools, saying this could pose a challenge to the running of their institutions.

“Government should avoid multiple taxation on private institutions but ensure fair taxation.

“What this will lead to is that institutions will invariably put this burden of multiple taxation on the parents when fees are being made. So make tax easy and very open so that people will be happy if they are paying taxes,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the school, Mrs Caroline Yakubu, while speaking on the book titled: “‘Success Pathways’ meto stablish educational system,” said dedication and consistency are key to success in life.

“The message basically is the fact that whatever you desire to do, when you are determined to do it, nothing can stop it.

“No matter the challenges because definitely if you want to succeed, you must be prepared to face the challenges but you also must be determined that whatever the road blocks are or that may present themselves as challenges you must be focused and determined,” she said.

Yakubu noted that the country needed quality education to grow every other sector and this would be achieved if the environment is conducive enough for investors to thrive.

“Quality education is expensive and the best the government can do for us, particularly private school owners is to create the enabling environment for us.

“They can also help us to access funds because we have a lot of needs that we are battling with as it were especially in terms of facilities, and the maintenance of the facilities.

“Whatever resources that we need, we will appreciate that the government come in no small measures to help us. Another thing that the government can do is to reduce the multiplicity of tax . It’s been a major problem for private school owners,” she said.

On security in schools, she called on stakeholders to come together to address this, saying that security is not just the government business but the business of all.

Why Yakubu Gowon must apologise to Igbos – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abia State chapter has charged former Military Head of State, Yakubu Gowon to apologise to the people of the Southeast over his role in the Biafra civil war.

Abraham Amah, the acting State Publicity Secretary of the party, said Gowon’s name unsettles a lot of people in the Southeast due to his involvement in the Civil war.

Amah was reacting to a statement that Gowon, alongside the state Governor-elect, Alex Otti, would lead a prayer session in the State on Sunday.

The prayer session is scheduled to be held at Master’s Vessel Church in Umuahia area of Abia State.

However, Amah expressed worry over the choice of Gowon as Special guest, adding that he was not against praying for the state.

A statement by Amah reads: “The attention of the Abia PDP has been drawn to a news item in circulation on social media indicating that Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon would on Sunday April 23, 2023 lead a prayer session in one Master’s Vessel Church Umuahia, Abia State under the auspices of his pet project, Nigeria Prays, to herald a new Abia. Whatever ‘a new Abia’ means.

“The name, Yakubu Gowon is unsettling to many people in the South East given the ignoble roles he played during the Biafran Civil War for which he is yet to render any public apology.”

Amah said the choice of Gowon as special guest in a state that is the home town of slain General Aguiyi Ironsi was insensitive.

Wondering why no other man of God was invited for the prayer session, the PDP noted that Abia State had produced a Catholic Bishop and other high-ranking clergymen.

The state chapter of the party stressed that Gown had yet to publicly admit his mistakes in the Civil war.

“The only way the prayer session would make meaning to the millions of South Easterners, dead and alive, is for Gowon to use the opportunity of the prayer session and convert it to a moment of truth and apologise to the people for his role in the atrocious war that led to the untimely death of millions of our very resourceful people,” he added.

FG opens up on plan to make NYSC optional

The Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare, says there is no plan by the Federal Government to make the mandatory one year NYSC programme optional.

He said this during the14th edition of the President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB)’s Administration Scorecard Series (2015-2023) on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said the rationale behind the establishment of the scheme in 1973 was the need to promote unity in the country.

Dare said that the livewire of any nation is its youths, adding that “once you captured their patriotism, that can spread cross.

“The rationale behind establishing the NYSC by Gen. Yakubu Gowon still subsists, as every country and even Nigeria is still on a daily basis promoting its unity in diversity.”

He said that a committee to organise the celebration of the NYSC at 50 in May 2023 would be inaugurated on Wednesday, adding that “with all the testimonies, no one will subscribe to scraping or even making the scheme optional.”

He explained that the scheme is looking forward to carrying out some reforms that would further add value to it.

He said “reform is a constant thing, the NYSC is looking at some reforms, we had challenges with those in the diaspora, certain aspects of whether you can serve or not has been there.

“The NYSC is working to make sure that those areas that are faulty about the laws are addressed.

“There is a solid data base that would detect if a graduate has fake certificate or not.”

On the recent removal of Brig-Gen. Muhammad Fadah as Director-General of the scheme, he said it
was central to youths of Nigeria.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari would not allow anything that would destroy the scheme.

  • #EndSARS: FG tackles UK parliament over attack on Gowon

#EndSARS: FG tackles UK parliament over attack on Gowon

The Federal Government has berated a UK parliamentarian, Tom Tugendhat, for accusing a former Nigerian leader, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, of stealing during a debate on the #EndSARS protest in the House of Commons.

The government also rebuked the UK parliament for acting in an uninformed manner in recommending sanctions for Nigeria over the hoax massacre at the Lekki Toll Gate during the protest.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, at a meeting with online publishers in Lagos on Tuesday said the knee jerk reaction of the House of Commons was informed by fake news and disinformation.

He chastised Tugendhat, Chairman, Foreign Affairs Committee of the British House of Commons for being “ignorant’’ and “flippant’’ in his accusation against Gowon.

“It is most disheartening that parliamentarians in a country with a history of upholding the finest ideals of democracy will act in such an uninformed manner on an issue such as EndSARS.

“The quality of the debate at the British Parliament on EndSARS was under par.

“Fake accusations based on fake news and disinformation were levelled against the Federal Government by poorly-informed participants at the debate.

“One MP even accused former Nigerian leader, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), who served this country to the best of his ability, of stealing half of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“Sheer Ignorance! The flippant MP, who unfortunately chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British House of Commons, did a great disservice to himself, the committee he chairs and the entire parliament by allowing himself to be misled by fake news exponents.

“Fittingly, the British Government has distanced itself from him,’’ he said.

Tugendhat, a Conservative Parliamentarian for Tombridge, Edenbridge and Malling had during the debate which led to the recommendation of sanctions against Nigeria, accused Gowon of stealing and money laundering.

“Now some people will remember when Gen. Gowon left Nigeria with half of the Central Bank, so it was said, and moved to London,’’ the MP had said.

Mohammed stressed that the twin evils of fake news and disinformation aggravated the recent #EndSARS protest and the aftermath.

He said the reactions of some countries were informed by fake news and disinformation, and varying figures of those purportedly killed in the hoax massacre at the Lekki Toll Gate.

“For example, parliamentarians in Britain put the figure of those killed at 10, CNN first reported 38 and then lowered the number to 1.

“And DJ Switch’s numbers cascaded from 78 dead to 15 to 7!

“Even an international broadcaster like CNN was misled by fake news and disinformation.

“But CNN has itself to blame for relying on unauthenticated videos which it took from social media

“Now, CNN is seeking to save face by trying to clarify its report, which was not only inaccurate but failed the simple test of balance and fairness,’’ he said.

The minister recalled that the government had petitioned CNN, asking it to use its own internal mechanism to probe its so-called investigative report on the Lekki Toll Gate incident.
