The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi and former Nigeria’s Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday were pictured all smiles while attending the International Leaders Forum (ILF) in Chicago on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the forum, in its 11th edition, is held in Illinois and will run from August 19 to 22.

The Nigerian leaders met and shared a moment to take pictures sandwiched by a lady and a gentleman.

In another picture, both were pictured seated and smiling in an office.

Speaking at the event however, Obi via his X.com handle said he was invited “along with two other eminent Nigerians, and about two hundred other distinguished political leaders from over 91 countries, including former Heads of Governments”.

“We were invited to participate in the 2024 International Leaders Forum (ILF) on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, holding on 19-22 August 2024,” Obi wrote on X.

He added, “I am honoured and grateful to Senator Thomas Daschle and the Board of NDI for the gracious invitation.”

Obi said the ILF offered leaders from Africa’s evolving democracies the opportunity to share their experiences and learn from others.

He said, “Over the years, NDI has identified and invited key senior politicians and policymakers from around the world to observe an essential and rich facet of the United States of America’s democratic process.

“The ILF gathering serves as an opportunity for such leaders drawn from across diverse nationalities, ideologies and geographies to build relationships based on their commonality of shared experiences while identifying, peculiarities as well as common interests and addressing pressing challenges to democratic institutions, values and norms.

“As President Tamara Wittes stated ‘Democracy is about communities making collective decisions even when people may have real differences of view – and so healthy Democracy relies on fostering open dialogue and trust. Without that trust, every political argument and every election becomes a zero-sum, existential battle’.

“This issue of trust and value was discussed during presentations and exchanges by participants including DNC Chair Jamie Harrison, former DNC Chair, and now Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Prime Minister of Kosovo, Former Prime Minister of Denmark, former NATO Secretary General, & others.

“The ILF offer those of us from Africa’s nascent and evolving democracies the opportunity to share our experiences and learn from others, various norms germane to building resilient democracies.

Osinbajo has not made any comments regarding his attendance.

  • Osinbajo, Remi Tinubu invoke God’s blessings on incoming government

Osinbajo, Remi Tinubu invoke God’s blessings on incoming government

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the Wife of the President-elect, Sen. Remi Tinubu, have prayed God to bless and guide the incoming administration to steer Nigeria to greater heights and prosperity.

The duo, who spoke on Sunday at the 2023 Presidential Inauguration Interdenominational Church Service, prayed God to grant the president-elect and the vice president-elect the wisdom to lead the nation.

Osinbajo attended the service alongside his wife, Dolapo.

The service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, was part of activities to mark the inauguration and swearing-in of the President-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu and Vice President-elect, Sen. Kashim Shettima.

Osinbajo said that the people of God had a duty to pray and work for the peace and prosperity of the nation regardless of party or other parochial considerations.

“Tomorrow, a new government will be born; concerning Jesus Christ, the Scripture says from birth, He grew in stature, wisdom and favour with God.

So, I pray in those same words for the President-elect,  Tinubu and the Vice President-elect, Shettima and the new government that as their days in office so shall they grow in stature, in wisdom and in favour with the almighty God.

“I pray for our nation, I pray that the Lord will prosper this land, that our land and its people will live in peace and security.

“And I pray for all who are here each and every one of you will be blessed in this land and you will live long to enjoy the fruits of God’s blessings on this land.

“God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ he prayed.

On her part, the wife of the president-elect, thanked God for granting his husband electoral victory.

She said that the incoming administration needed the Grace of God and the support of everyone in order to do what Nigerians were expecting.

The wife of the president-elect said: “Today, God has really proved himself as he did on the night of the primaries and put a seal on it.

“Today, we have in Psalm 133: 1 to 3, except there is unity, blessings cannot flow down; this is the time for Nigeria to come together for us to be renewed in our hope again.

“The children that sang here today are expecting the best for Nigeria; Nigeria’s wealth is the commonwealth of all; it belongs to everyone.

“I promise on this altar; that with your help, with the help of God, we will set this nation of the right path; we need your prayers.

”I can tell you, I am a silent worker; I am not a noise maker but l listen and I hear; it is not out of pride but because of what the journey has melted on us.”

According to her, the new government will do the right thing by the Grace of God.

Earlier in his sermon, Johnpraise Daniel, Presiding Archbishop, Dominion Chapel International Churches, said it was a time to heal the wounds of the nation.

He urged the incoming government to carry everybody along regardless of political affiliation.

Daniel urged the incoming administration to step up efforts at boosting economic growth and attracting more investments.

According to him, Nigerians should beam with renewed hope and not allow the current predicaments to blind them to the promises of God for the nation.

“The time to heal the wounds in our nation; one of the surest ways of achieving this is forming an inclusive government not minding who did or did not vote for the incoming president.

“It is time to awaken the sleeping giant in us with deliberate efforts made to enthrone accountability, transparency, justice and the rule of law which constitute veritable panacea for peaceful co-existence and sustainable growth and development which we all yearn for.

“Our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) must grow exponentially while debt burdens should no longer assail our economy.

“We have the potential to be the true giant of Africa and a destination of choice for Foreign Direct Investment, tourism, and hosting of world class events.

“This is our ideal Nigerian dream and by the Grace of God, we shall be singing Hosanna and glory to the King of Kings for greater things He will do in no distant future,’’  he said.

In his vote of thanks, Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, thanked the Christian Association of Nigeria, the organising committee and the congregants for their solidarity and support in bringing the service to fruition.

Former Head of State, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon and his wife, Victoria, and the Wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Salamatu Gbajabiamila, attended the service.

Members of the Federal Executive Council, All Progressives Congress chieftains, service chiefs, members of the National Assembly, members of the judiciary, members of the diplomatic corps and Muslim clerics, among others also attended.

  • Buhari, Osinbajo leave official vehicles for Tinubu, Shettima

Buhari, Osinbajo leave official vehicles for Tinubu, Shettima

The presidency has shed light on whether President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and cabinet ministers are allowed to retain their official vehicles upon leaving office.

According to the presidency, President Buhari, Vice President Osinbajo, and cabinet ministers will not be permitted to keep their official vehicles after their tenure concludes.

Furthermore, it was confirmed that President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo would leave behind their armoured luxury vehicles, which will be handed over to their successors, namely Bola Tinubu and his deputy, Kashim Shettima.

It also added that the severance benefits for ministers will be in line with the guidelines set by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, explained in an interview with the Punch that no one is entitled to official cars. Instead, project vehicles are being utilised, which can only be sold after four years when their book value is depleted.

“Don’t expect that because ministers are leaving, they will carry their vehicles under Buhari. It is not going to happen. If the ministers are not taking their vehicles along, you don’t expect the president to take any. It is not going to happen,” he said.

Shehu further clarified that former presidents and vice presidents are already granted a specific number of vehicles according to the law, which may be updated after a certain period. He assured that President Buhari would adhere to this arrangement and not place himself above his predecessors.

The President and Vice President currently make use of 2019 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S650 bullet-proof sedans, estimated to be worth at least ₦300 million, according to experts.

  • Our stories must be of aspirations, dreams, hopes – Osinbajo

Our stories must be of aspirations, dreams, hopes – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has urged Nigerians to project the country’s image in good light and push narratives of aspirations, dreams and hopes.

Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement, said the vice president spoke recently in Abuja at the formal presentation and book launch.

The book is titled “The Memory of Seasons,” written by award-winning writer and journalist, Arukaino Umukoro.

The theme of the presentation was, “Conversations on Nigeria’s Unity in Diversity: Challenges, Opportunities.”

The book is a collection of poems on nationhood, faith, life and humanity.

The vice president, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, said that, “a big part of Nation building is talking up your nation.”

According to Osinbajo, every country talks up their own country and people of every country talk up their own country.

“When we get home, we can criticize ourselves, but we must talk up our country; what are the narratives that we push about Nigeria?

“The stories of nations written by others focus on their own agendas, the agendas of the authors; the negatives, of course, sell more and much faster, we must tell our own stories.

“We belong to one side; and that side is the Nigerian side; someone was talking about Arsenal a few moments ago, that Arsenal would win this premier league.

“Because that’s our side, we take the side; they may not be the best, they may not win all the time, but that’s our side; this country is our side.’’

According to him, Nigerians must talk up the country and give the very best impression of the country.

The vice president said that Nigeria was not about its politicians, religious leaders or its business leaders but for everybody.

“Our stories must be stories of our aspirations, our dreams and our hopes, planted on the successes of our journey and the future of great hope, because we have the incredible talents and material resources, and already on that journey, we are very far ahead.

“And I think the poem– Imagine Nigeria– which is in the book, captures the story we want to tell the world; and I’m going to read portions of it just to encourage us.”

Osinbajo congratulated the author for delivering such a wonderful set of poems.

“Sometimes, we have to reflect when you read Umukoro’s poetry; you have to think again and reflect.

“I am overwhelmed by the achievements of Umukoro; we have heard about all the awards he has won,’’ he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Rabiu Suleiman, Chief Executive Officer, RiftOil Petroleum Company Limited, commended the author for an important literary work that spoke to nationhood.

“I am proud of his achievements and how far he has come since then.

“ It is obvious that the vice president is a big inspiration to him. Umukoro talks a lot about Osinbajo’s exemplary character, selfless service and dedication to nation-building,” he said.

Highlights of the event included spoken word performances focused on nation-building from Umukoro’s book – including “Imagine Nigeria’’ and “Rebirth of a Nation.’’

They were performed by Tamara Dogubo and Abdullahi Haruna.

There was also a panel discussion on the theme of the event.

The panel, which was moderated by journalist, Irene Ubani, featured Tolu Ogunlesi, Special Assistant to President on Digital and New Media, and Maupe Ogun, co-anchor, Channels Television prime-time breakfast show “Sunrise Daily.”

Other panelists were Novo Isioro, founder, Anisza Foundation, Myani Bukar, Lawyer and Development Economist.

The conversations were aimed at driving meaningful discourse that will promote national unity.

The founder of Project One Nigeria, Busayo Busari-Akinnadeju, gave goodwill remarks that urged patriotism and pride in Nigeria and its greatness.

Ade Ipaye, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, in the Office of the Vice President, Amb. Adeyemi Dipeolu, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, among other senior government officials were also at the event.

VP Osinbajo phones family of Mrs Bolanle Raheem

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has contacted and consoled the husband and family of Mrs Bolanle Raheem, who was killed by a policeman on Christmas day in Lagos.

Raheem, who was pregnant, was fatally shot on Dec. 25 by a police officer attached to the Ajiwe police division in the Ajah area of the state.

The family of Raheem, a Lagos-based lawyer, and Gbenga, the husband, have been receiving guests since the unfortunate incident.

Osinbajo contacted the husband and family on Dec. 28 to condole and pray with them, even though aides say he has been away on vacation since Christmas Day when he preached at the Aso Villa Chapel.

The murder of the late Raheem on Christmas day has sparked reactions from Nigerians from different walks of life, including condolences for the family and prayers for the repose of her soul.

The vice president, during the phone call made from his vacation, also assured the deceased family of justice and prayed God to give them the fortitude to bear the loss.

The late Raheem was a member of the Olive Parish of the RCCG in Ikoyi, where Osinbajo was a Pastor up until 2015 when he took office as Vice President.

Alongside President Muhammadu Buhari, Osinbajo, had in the wake of the EndSARs protest in 2020, championed the reform of the police special units, eventually leading to the outright dissolution of the police anti-robbery squad.

Moreso, the vice president, while acting as president, had directed an overhauling of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in line with his pro-rule of law stance, disdain for extrajudicial killing and his outright condemnation of police brutality.

Osinbajo, had also, through the National Economic Council (NEC), directed the creation of judicial panels in states across the country that reviewed cases of police brutality and extra-judicial killings across the country in the ENDSARS aftermath.

Arising from those panels hundreds of millions have been paid as damages and compensations, even as the administration is expected to do more.

Aside the vice president, other prominent Nigerians including Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, have also condemned the killing and commiserated with the Raheem family.
