  • We’ll take 10m Nigerian out of poverty – Osinbajo

The vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said 10 millions Nigerian would be out of poverty in the next 10 years.
Osimbajo made this promise on Thursday at Abdullahi Fodio palace in Birnin Kebbi when he paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Bashar.
” The president Muhammadu Buhari has promised to take 10 millions Nigerian out of poverty in the next 10 years, we can believe very strongly we can achieve it with the collaboration with the state governors
” We are here in Kebbi for several things and to promote National Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and petty traders business, and to inspect the renovation of market in the state,” he said.
According to the Vice President, the National Micro and Medium Enterprises scheme is a scheme that is designed to developed the business of petty traders in the country, which can alleviate the level of poverty in the country.
” We give petty traders N10,000, when they pay back we increase it to N20,000.
“This is very good program which is designed to help hard working citizens of this country; they should be able to have support from government no matter how little it is,” he said
He commented the traditional ruler, Alhaji Muhammadu Bashar, for collaborating with security agencies in fighting insecurity in the state.
He further thanks Gov. Abubakar Bagudu for supporting trader groups across 21 local government areas of the State and for giving N200 million loan to National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
”Am so please to hear what NURTW has been doing in Kebbi; every ward has two drivers to take pregnant women to hospital and wait for one hour in the hospital and take them back home; they are rendering service to humanity,” he said.
The Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Bashar, commended the vice president for promoting petty traders across the country.
Bashar said Nigerian should come together and forgets cultural and religious differences and embrace peace and development.
He further congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for their tribunal victory.
  • FG committed to knowledge-driven economy – Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday said the development of human capital was key to the progress and prosperity of any nation.
Osinbajo made the remark in Lagos while speaking at the “40th Anniversary Re-Union Symposium’’ organised by the 1979 Economics Class of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the symposium was “Alternative Approach to Financing Public University Education for Effective Human Capital Development in Nigeria’’.
The Vice-President said what separated the developed and the under-developed countries of the world was the high quality of the human capital of the former.
He added that the development of the Western countries, as well as the Asian Tigers was not by accident but by massive investment in human capital.
Osinbajo said the government was committed to a knowledge-driven economy, hence its increased investments in the education sector .
The Vice-President added that the government was also implementing programmes and policies to improve access to education, to catalyse the country’s progress.
He described the 10million out-of-school children as an undesirable situation, saying the Federal Government was collaborating with the state governments to address the problem.
The Vice-President said the Federal Government was investing massively in the free and compulsory education for children, for the first nine years of their lives.
He urged the state governments to complement the efforts of the Federal Government by showing more commitment to basic education.
Osinbajo said the government’s school feeding programme had improved enrolment by about 40 per cent and that the government was strengthening the programme to record more gains.
The Vice-President said the girl-child education was strategic to development, saying the government was giving it all the attention it deserves.
“Some studies have shown that girls are smarter than boys.
“Any nation that does not educate its girls is doing itself a great harm.
“How do you solve your problem when you lock up your best minds?
“So educating the girl-child is not only sound economics but can also help to reduce the problem of population growth.
“One of the reasons we have a large population is early marriages and it is because many of these girls are not educated.
“When you educate these girls, you can actually reduce population growth rate. We are committed to the girl-child education and we are doing a lot to get our girls in schools,’’ he said.
On teaching quality, Osinbajo said the government was revamping Colleges of Education to provide the needed manpower for especially, basic education.
He added that the government planned the redesigning of the school curriculums to ensure that education meets the needs of the times.
The Vice-President said the government was also investing in education infrastructure at all levels, to improve teaching and learning.
He commended the OAU 1979 Economics Class for organising the symposium, saying that it would add to the discourse on the need for better education.
Osinbajo urged the class to sustain its advocacy for a better education sector.
The Vice-President said nation-building was a collective responsibility and urged all citizens to contribute their quota to move the country forward.
Delivering the keynote address, a former Vice-President of the African Development Bank, Chief Bisi Ogunjobi, called for increased funding of education to make it functional.
He expressed regrets that the education sector had continued to nosedive owing to poor funding and other issues.
“We used to have a university system that was working. I attended the University of Ibadan, and in those days, the facilities were excellent and the faculty members were great.
“UI was a university of diversity because students from all over Nigeria, including so many countries like Cameroon and Zimbabwe were there at the time.
“What we have now is the “catchment areas’’ system where universities attract their students mainly from particular areas and this has really affected the system.
“Things used to be good, there is need for a revamp in the sector to drive development,’’ he said.
Ogunjobi said the proliferation of universities without commensurate funding had negatively affected the sector.
The one-time Pro-Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, added that the establishment of many universities to get bragging rights by states was not good for the country.
He said there was need for all stakeholders to initiate alternative ways to fund university education, to guarantee affordability and quality.
Ogunjobi said the academic exploits of Nigerian students in foreign universities showed that with a good learning environment, there would be better outcomes.
He commended the Class for the symposium but expressed the worry that economists were not doing as much as accountants to shape policy formulation in the country.
Ogunjobi, therefore, urged members of the class to join the relevant professional body so that they could contribute more to the nation ,just like ICAN.
The Guest Speaker, Mr Chinedum Nwoko, faulted the use of strikes by university lecturers to make demands from government.
He said frequent strikes had affected the university system negatively and undermined standards.
Nwoko, a Consulting Executive at Policy Associates, a policy advisory and development outfit, urged university lecturers to find better ways to engage the government on issues.
“Also, the government should stop throwing money at ASUU whenever there is a strike. That is not sustainable; you cannot throw money at a problem to solve it.
“There must be practical solutions to the problems of the university system, instead of giving money to lecturers anytime they are on strike,’’ he said.
    .
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Class, Chief Mark Dike, said the class was concerned about the state of affairs in the education sector.
He said that it was in view of the concern that the class organised the 40th Re-Union symposium to give input to the question of how to improve the sector.
Dike said the class would forward the recommendations of the symposium to the Federal Government for necessary interventions.
NAN reports that renowned academic, Prof. Bolaji Aluko; Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede and the president of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, were some of the prominent personalities at the programme.

Huawei ban: Nigeria ‘boasts’ to roll out 5G networks itself

Following U.S. calls for countries to follow its footsteps to ban Huawei Technologies on national security grounds, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said Nigeria will roll out 5G networks itself, “talking about the equipment and technology”.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Osinbajo stated this on Monday at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City, when quizzed, after his opening remarks at the event, about the ongoing international dispute regarding some global technology firms and the issue of 5G.

He explained that even though Nigeria is yet to roll out 5G, “we do not have those complications (comparatively) in taking decisions in that regard. But, we practically welcome every company that wants to do business with us in Nigeria. Huawei is in Nigeria and so are all the other technology companies.

“We haven’t gone through any kind of decision making for rolling out the 5G technology. As a matter of fact we are going to roll out 5G ourselves. Talking about the equipment and technology; how did the Chinese get it? How did anyone else get the technology? We will do it ourselves”.

Speaking further, the Vice President said the potential, effort and impact being made by Nigerians in technology can enable the country roll out indigenous technology solutions that can transform the global space.

Osinbajo, who was optimistic about the possibility to developing homegrown capacity in the technology space said government would leverage the efforts and resourcefulness of youths to actualize its potentials in the sector.

“Our potential in technology and entertainment has been attracting huge attention. First is the market, at 174 million GSM phones, we are among the top ten telephone users in the world, and we have the highest percentage of people who use internet on their phones in the world.

“We are also number two in mobile internet banking in the world, and 17 million Nigerians are on Facebook. Microsoft has announced that it will establish a 100 million dollar African Development Centre in Nigeria.

“Second is the ever-growing number of technology startups, young digital entrepreneurs who are creating solutions to value chain and logistics challenges and creating thousands of jobs in the process. Andela, a software company training software developers for many Fortune 500 companies received a $24m dollar investment from Facebook,” he said.

  • VP Osinbajo bags Life Bencher award

VP Osinbajo bags Life Bencher award

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was on Friday presented with Life Benchers Award.

Osinbajo and 131 others were presented with the award at the Body of Benchers of Nigeria Award night held at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja.

The Body of Benchers is a statutory body established by the Legal Practitioners Act, I962 responsible for Call to the Bar of persons seeking to be legal practitioners as well as discipline of erring lawyers.

A Life Bencher serves in the body for life and is a legal practitioner of the highest distinction.

In his remarks, Osinbajo said he was elated by the honour and commended the body for the extraordinary leadership it had provided over the years

He said that the Body had borne the enormous responsibility of being the conscience, arbiter, judge and interlocutor for the legal profession and administration of justice system.

“I am deeply honoured to have been preferred to the prestigious rank of Life Bencher.

“It is humbling, but also exciting to be reminded that one still has more to offer. I owe gratitude to the remarkable men and women – teachers, mentors, partners and students, who have contributed to my professional experience. I accept this honour as a call to greater responsibility.

“Perhaps, one should also seize this opportunity to salute all distinguished colleagues, seniors and juniors alike, who have internalised the application of the rule of law in the most difficult circumstances.

“Stood for the helpless through advocacy; demanded transparency and accountability in all spheres; and pushed for positive reforms in the advancement of not just our system of justice, but also all the ramparts upon which our democracy is built, alongside our nationhood and common patrimony.

“Today, our profession stands at a critical cross-road. Yet, the different possible paths that we could take have, to my mind, never been as illuminated and clear as they are today. One path is the path of business as usual which of course means that we will face the extinction of our credibility soon enough.

“The other is the path of renewal, the right path; a more courageous even if more difficult path.”

He said that the weaknesses that had recently been exposed in the profession, as disturbing as they were, had provided great opportunity for deep introspection and self-assessment.

He said that the benchers owed the young and aspiring lawyers the duty to set the ground rules right and to lead by example.

According to him, as custodians of the law, lawyers owe the nation, at the very least, the duty to ensure the proper functioning of the justice system.

Osinbajo said that the professional practice and the courts must always measure up to the moral, ethical and statutory standards ascribed to them.

“Whether we sit at the Bar or on the bench, we bear the responsibility for a fair and just society; a free, fair and impartial justice system that ushers in progressive reforms in governance and protects the social structure of our nation.

“Our everyday practice of law has the potential to either strengthen or weaken our democratic values and institutions.

“The sobriquet ‘learned’ that everyone ascribes to us, suggests amongst other attributes, that we are- skilled not only in the art of our trade/calling, but also in the mechanics of a just society.

“That just society cannot be established by mere wishes or rhetoric; it can only be by deliberate action and sacrifice especially of those of us to whom our profession has so generously conferred membership of its highest body,” he said.

He congratulated all the honorees, adding that award from the most distinguished Body of the profession was worthy of commendation.

Earlier, in his address, the Chairman, Body of Benchers of Nigeria, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, said that the a system had been put in place to recognise those whose efforts contributed in maintaining and sustaining the values of the profession.

In a goodwill message, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said that legal practitioners were defenders of Nigeria’s democracy and urged them to discharge their duties creditably.

On his part, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said he was delighted that the works of the awardees were being acknowledged.

He said that the gesture would spur them into serving the country more.

Awards were also presented to past chairmen of the body.

The event also attracted governors of Sokoto, Plateau and Bayelsa state as well as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Some members of the Federal Executive Council were attended the event.

  • Delta guber poll: Who wins?

    Delta guber poll: Who wins?

President Muhammadu Buhari comment during a recent stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has placed focus on especially the governorship election in the State.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Buhari, represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, at the meeting had said “What happened at the Presidential and National Assembly elections was a great victory, but the completion of the victory will come on Saturday when Great Ogboru will become the governor of Delta.

“Delta cannot be the same again. Delta was our focus of attention, we wanted to see what will happen.

“Delta has proved a very important point that it is ready for a change to the next level”.

However, while casting his vote during the election on Saturday at Omi Primary School, Owa-Alero, Agbor, the State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, expressed confidence that he will emerge victorious.

“By the grace of God, I will emerge victorious; I have partnered with Deltans, I have worked with them, and by God’s grace, a lot of them will vote for me.

“The only thing we are doing is to ensure that those who planned to use thugs to disrupt the elections will be handled by the security agencies because, aside plans to disrupt the elections, it would be a no contest situation.

Meanwhile, Great Ogboru, who is the candidate of the APC, the major opposition party in the State, had also expressed hope of victory.

Ogboru who spoke to journalists immediately after casting his vote in ward 8, unit 1 at Abraka Grammar School, Abraka, said he was in the gubernatorial race to win.

“We have gone into the contest because we believe we will win and we will win,” Ogboru said.

Assessing the process so far, Ogboru noted that there were pockets of violence in some parts of the state, alleging that elections were conducted overnight in private residents of some opposition leaders.

“Reports reaching us says that elections were conducted overnight in Burutu and Bomadi local government area of Delta.

“There are pockets of violence here and there and the security agents are doing their best to calm the situation.

“In most of the riverine communities the requirement to use the card readers were not adhered to. In any case this is just the beginning, so let’s see how the day ends.

“However, there is a massive turnout of voters across the state and we pray that everything turns out peacefully.

“The security situation in some parts of the state is good while in some parts, there is security lapses. We have reported some of these incidences to the police with the hope that they will take appropriate action,” Ogboru said.

On his part, Okowa said “So far, the electoral process is peaceful, and we pray to God that it remains peaceful; people are coming out in their large numbers to cast their votes, a lot of votes have been cast already despite the fact that it is still very early in the day; we hope that the voting process remains peaceful across the state.

“I believe the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has done well, everything appears to be working well, but, the day is just starting and of course, we are still perfecting our system but, the best thing is the effectiveness of the response to handle any challenge as they occur by the INEC officials.

“INEC did well to deploy a lot of youth corpers at each polling unit, that has made the job easy as they assist themselves, we can see that there is a lot of assistance to each other”.

TNG reports winner of the governorship election in the State would be determined by INEC after counting of votes and collation of results.

  • Delta cannot be the same again – Buhari

Delta cannot be the same again – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured voters in Delta of adequate security in Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at a town hall meeting in Warri on Monday, said that the issue of security was fundamental to the electoral process.

The president said that special attention would be focused on security to enable the electorate exercise their franchise and check any form of intimidation.

“What happened at the Presidential and National Assembly elections was a great victory, but the completion of the victory will come on Saturday when Great Ogboru will become the governor of Delta.

“Delta cannot be the same again. Delta was our focus of attention, we wanted to see what will happen.

“Delta has proved a very important point that it is ready for a change to the next level.

”Security is a fundamental issue and we will pay special attention to it,” he said.

The president also urged leaders and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to unite, saying “when we work together, we will emerge victorious on Saturday.’’

Also speaking, the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomohole, commended the people for voting massively for the APC in the recent poll.

He urged the voters to be courageous and vote overwhelmingly for Ogboru in Saturday’s gubernatorial election.

”You have substantially weakened the rigging machine of the PDP.

“No one will provide unlawful security. Security operatives should ensure that votes are counted because President Buhari wants to have a cleaner election,” he said.

Dr Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister for State for Petroleum Resources, described the occasion as “a unifying day for us to come and work together.’’

Ogboru, in his opening remarks, had urged the government to provide adequate security to avoid a repeat of the violence witnessed in the state during the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

”Security issues should be looked into seriously, if there is adequate security, the electorate will turnout en masse to cast their votes,” he said.

Participants, who spoke at the interactive session, all stressed the need for adequate security during Saturday’s elections.

The event was attended by traditional rulers from the three senatorial districts of the state, religious and opinion leaders as well as market women and youths.

  • APC meeting in Delta complete with infectious enthusiasm, says Akande

Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said the stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State was complete with infectious enthusiasm.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Akande also said the meeting in Warri, in which Osinbajo represented President Muhammadu Buhari, was “a widely attended event”.

“VP Osinbajo now in Warri representing the President at an APC Delta State Stakeholders’ interactive forum, a widely attended event complete with an infectious enthusiasm,” Akande tweeted.

President Buhari shelved the meeting citing “unforseen state duties suddenly arising” and drafted Osinbajo, who is billed to visit Akwa Ibom State for a scheduled Town Hall meeting today, to attend the stakeholders meeting in his stead.

Details of the stakeholders meeting, which TheNewsGuru (TNG) will publish later, are still sketchy at the time of filing this report.

  • After PDP complain, Buhari shelves APC stakeholders meeting in Delta

President Muhammadu Buhari has shelved the All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders meeting scheduled to hold in Warri, Delta state today.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Senator Ita Enang, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, who made this known, said it was due to “unforseen state duties suddenly arising”.

Enang said the President has delegated Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is billed to visit Akwa Ibom State for a scheduled Town Hall meeting today, to attend the stakeholders meeting in his stead.

“His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has so delegated due to unforseen state duties suddenly arising. Time is 2pm, all other programmes remain the same,” the Senator said.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State had earlier reacted to the President’s visit to the State.

Ifeanyi Osuoza, State Publicity Secretary of the PDP in a statement on Monday, had said the President’s reported visit to the State was not altruistic.

The statement reads: “As President Muhammadu Buhari visits Warri today, the second visit in about two months, it is not a surprise that tongues are wagging within the circles of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Delta State that the trip is in bad taste, as the party supporters and Deltans in general are wondering why the president has always limited his visits to a microscopic Warri and ignoring the larger areas of the State.

“However, while we of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Delta State will not get involved in the internal belligerent matters of a party that lives in factional disharmony, we urge the President not to get involved in sinister contrivances by working to use his office as President, to scheme and manipulate the electoral process.

“We say this because of the March 9, 2019 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections, as we have it on good authority that Buhari’s trip is not altruistic, and has nothing to do with the good and progress of Delta State.

“Already, the entire Delta State is abuzz with claims and insinuations and it is being openly said that the President and indeed the whole gamut of well known election manipulators and hatchet men in the national APC leadership, are visiting Delta State ostensibly to perfect an APC rigging plan and subvert the electoral process and the ultimate democratic decisions of Deltans who have sworn to return Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for a well deserved second term and vote for all the PDP candidates in the March 9, 2019 State Assembly elections.

“It is indeed a thing of shame that President Buhari will ignore other very important and urgent State matters to come to Warri to be at the head of a despicable scheme to manipulate and swing votes in favour of the unpopular APC and its candidates.

“We condemn the president’s insensitivity to the sensibilities of the people of Delta State who have taken PDP as their party.“We also decry the shameful, slimy drive of Buhari and his detestable mission to use the power of State to secretly get the various agencies of the Federal Government, namely, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police, the military and other security agencies to intimidate and harass PDP supporters, voters and subvert their democratic will and foist on the State an unpopular APC and its candidate.

“While the foregoing is to seriously inform and educate the general public of Delta State, Nigerians and the world at large of the President’s tricks and treacherous game plan being schemed to thwart and by subterfuge subvert the already known will of Deltans who are poised to vote for Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and other PDP candidates, we warn that President Muhammadu Buhari must be held responsible for any complications that may develop from his inglorious interference in the voting process in Delta State.

“Let the president be reassured that the people of Delta State are resolute in their decision to vote for the PDP candidates and keeping the party in Delta State. Certainly, he should understand that no amount of intimidation and other ill-conceived and devious ideas to thwart the peoples’ will shall thrive because Delta State is PDP and PDP is Delta State.

“We totally condemn Mr. President’s moves and schemes and say that they are mean and uncomplimentary. It is curious why the President has chosen to visit Warri at a time like this in the heat of preparations for, and almost on the eve of the State elections in which his party, and the APC is the major opposition party.

“We warn that he should not do anything that would be seen as his interference in the process that will make Saturday’s election not to be free, fair and credible.

“On this note, we call on PDP faithful, leaders, supporters and faithful not to be intimidated, but should come out in large numbers to vote the PDP, ensure that their votes count.

“We urge them to remain steadfast in standing by and for Governor Okowa’s re-election and all the PDP candidates”.
