Christmas: Osinbajo sends message of hope to Nigerians

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the celebration of Christmas brings hope, joy, God’s Grace and relief to Nigerians.

Osinbajo spoke with State House correspondents on Sunday after the Christmas Service at Aso Villa Chapel where he delivered the sermon.

According to him, the celebration is good news because Jesus Christ offers himself for the sins of man.

“My message is the message of Christmas which is the birth of the new covenant; the birth of Grace; God’s Grace and mercy is what we celebrate today because the birth of Jesus Christ is the birth of the Grace of God.

“From the moment Christ was born, God said he was not going to hold us to account for our sins for as long as we believed in what he did; the sacrifice of Jesus Christ; Jesus Christ came to pay in full for all of our sins.

“So, really why we celebrate is because this is good news; before, we had to pay for our sins; the consequence of sin we have to bear.

”This is because we always continue to sin; but Jesus came to substitute all our unrighteousness and replace it with his own righteousness so long as we believe him.

“So, it is a celebration of joy and a great relief; that is why it is called the good news,’’ he said.

On his part, Pastor Seyi Malomo, Chaplain, Aso Villa Chapel, said that Jesus Christ is a bringer of the new covenant; the covenant of Emmanuel; of God with us.

According to him, one who has God lacks nothing

“What’s most important is when you have God on your side; things are definitely bound to improve.

“And as we go into the New Year, with God on our side, no matter how and whatever may be the negative forecast of people, we know that God who goes ahead of us; will make the crooked place straight.

“He will make the rough edges smooth; he will level the mountains and elevate the valleys and he will give us victory.

“Peace is for us in Jesus name,’’ he said.

Osinbajo tasks state assemblies on speedy ratification of LG autonomy bill

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called on State Houses of Assembly to speedily ratify the bill seeking total autonomy and devolution of powers to the Local Government Areas in the country.

The vice president made the call on Friday while delivering the “Distinguished Annual Lecture” of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS), Kuru, near Jos.

Newsmen reports that the lecture was titled ”Subnational Local Governance in Africa: Rethinking Policies, Frameworks and Institutions”.

Osinbajo, who was represented by Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, said that local authorities play key roles towards nation building, but lamented that the third tier of government had over time been neglected and undervalued.

He maintained that the ongoing constitutional amendment seeking to allocate more powers to the local governments is a step in the right direction.

”While the roles of state governments and their scope of authority appear very well appreciated, local governments remain, in my view, quite undervalued, needing more attention from all of us, better funding, organisational and high quality leadership.

”As we speak, a bill for local government autonomy is striving hard to pass the threshold of 24 votes required from state Houses of Assembly, a key milestone towards its passage.

”I believe that efforts being made, through the ongoing constitutional amendment, to cede more responsibilities for control and management of resources to local governments across the country reflect our understanding of how crucial it has become for this tier of government to take full charge of their responsibilities and functions at optimal capacity.

”After all, it is often argued that local government is closest to the people and best placed to impact on their lives,” he said.

The vice president argued that local government fiscal autonomy would promote peace and security in country, adding that people at rural communities understand their terrain better and know how to deploy resources towards tackling security challenges.

He insisted that the yearning for local government autonomy is a step in the right direction and called on state assemblies to expedite actions toward ratifying the autonomy bill.

He added that the advantages that come with local government autonomy are obviously enormous, adding that it would further consolidate on Nigeria’s democratic system.

”Ratifying the bill that grants local governments fiscal autonomy in Nigeria is indeed a step in the right direction, and we encourage the yet-to-be decided voters from state assemblies to be considerate in this regard and speedily pass it.

”The issue of security for example which has posed significant challenge in the last decades cannot be effectively and consistently tackled with centralised security structure and resources.

”It is clear that Nigeria is too vast to be policed from the centre and the people at the grassroots know the intricacies of their communities better, they know the geography intimately, they understand the ebbs and flows of people and information in a greater deal.

”It is my firm belief that we must strengthen our sub-national administrative units via further devolution of powers and resources for effective performance,” he said.

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, who chaired the occasion, said that there is a strong nexus between effective local governance and sustainable development, hence Nigeria should not be left behind in this paradigm shift.

He maintained that an effective local authority would address poverty, hunger, inequality, insecurity, illiteracy, among other challenges currently facing the nation.

Earlier, Prof Ayo Omotayo, the Director General of NIPPS, said the distinguished annual lecture was part of activities for the graduation ceremony of the institute’s Senior Executive Course (SEC) 44.

In his speech before declaring the event opened, he said people who do not know the meaning of the words of a song, enjoy the rhythm. He said some could go further to find out meanings of lyrics, discovering the cultures and ideas that inspired them.

Osinbajo noted that currently, Nigerian music, rendered in Nigerian languages are played all over the world He went ahead to sing, perform “Buga’’ and as well gave the interpretation of the lyrics

“Let us see how many people know this song “Koni baje o. let me see you go low low / Let me see you go lolo…..Buga won. The phrase “buga won” is a Yoruba expression, it means flaunt your hard won success while “collect your money” means, `take the fruits of your work’’.

  • Osinbajo backs Africa’s case for just energy transition

Osinbajo backs Africa’s case for just energy transition

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says only strong partnerships and coordination among African countries can guarantee the mobilisation of resources required for a just energy transition.

Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, said the vice president sent a recorded message to an African Union event at the ongoing CoP27 in Egypt.

The message was for the unveiling of the 4D Digital Green Industrial Corridor and launch of the African Union Transition Fuels Oversight and Regulatory Management Accelerator (TRANSFORMA).

TRANSFORMA is a 4D initiative to fast-track the Digital Green Industrial Corridor between the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) member states.

According to the vice president, the case of the African continent, particularly with respect to the just energy transition, is cogent and irrefutable.

“Tackling the combined challenges of COVID-19 recovery, climate change and overall sustainable development requires significant resources that can only be delivered through strong partnerships and coordination.

“For instance, the Climate Policy Initiative estimates that Africa needs about 2.8 trillion dollars between 2020 and 2030 to implement our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

“This translates to about 277 billion dollars per annum but annual climate finance flows in Africa stand at only 29.5 billion dollars.”

Osinbajo said that adding innovations like the 4D Digital Green Corridor and TRANSFORMA, by creating ready platforms for Pan-African collaboration, were critical to finance and more broadly, resource mobilization on the continent.

He said that it was exciting to see that the launch came as other initiatives such as the African Carbon Market initiative was being announced.

“Many of our challenges and priorities are shared. African governments are tasked with eradicating poverty, providing opportunities for our expanding populations, delivering robust healthcare solutions and unlocking prosperity for future generations.

“Beneficial role of Pan-African cooperation on these issues has been established.

“Reports from the World Bank estimate that the AfCFTA could raise income on the continent by over 450 billion dollars by 2035 and lift 50 million people out of extreme poverty. Importantly, the continent could see foreign direct investment increase by between 111 percent and 159 percent under the AfCFTA.

“Maximization of this potential which is what the 4D Digital Green Industrial Corridor and TRANSFORMA propose to do must be a priority.’’

Osinbajo emphasised the need for stakeholders to be united in order to attract more attention.

He said that it was clear that the joint advocacy on principles for a just transition was getting stronger, adding that home-grown solutions must do the same.

“Our case as a continent, particularly with respect to the just energy transition, is cogent and irrefutable.

“We cannot accept a global energy transition that leaves millions of our people in the dark, exposed to harmful pollutants due to unclean cooking, or poor and unemployed because of limited industrial activity.”

The vice president said, like the U.S, China, Japan, and other developed economies where gas was a major pillar of their multi-decadal decarbonisation strategies, Africa deserved the policy flexibility and support to leverage natural gas for the speedy resolution of its energy needs.

“Natural gas has a key role to play in Africa as a transition fuel to facilitate the delivery of electricity access and clean cooking solutions, the scaleup and integration of renewable energy into the energy mix and the switch from dirtier fuels like diesel and petrol.”

On Nigeria’s energy transition efforts, Osinbajo said that the country was well-aligned with the goals of the Green Recovery Action Plan, and was seeing clear synergies with the mandate of Transforma.

He said that in 2020, as part of our Economic Sustainability Plan to drive post-COVID recovery and economic growth, Nigeria unveiled the National LPG Expansion Implementation Programme.

The vice president said it was in realisation of the potential of LPG and other NGLs to address energy access, climate and industrial bottlenecks.

“It has been estimated that economic activities stimulated by the domestic utilisation of Nigeria’s recoverable gas reserves could support 6.5 million full-time equivalent jobs and produce 18.3 billion dollars in gross value addition annually, with over 5 billion dollars of this amount directly from capturing the economic value of NGLs.

“TRANSFORMA is indeed a welcome development, and we recognise the value that the transcontinental policy and implementation vehicle offers in mobilising larger investments, improving shared learning and producing larger economies of scale for individual nations like Nigeria and also for the entire continent.”

Other leaders who spoke at the event included President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo and President Hakainde Hichilema of the Republic of Zambia.

VP Osinbajo extols hospital where he had knee surgery

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo congratulated the management of Duchess International Hospital, Lagos, on Thursday on the hospital’s first anniversary.

Osinbajo, in a recorded message, recalled his worthwhile experience of the hospital’s medical care.

He affirmed that the hospital had proved to be world-class both in the quality of its medical personnel and management, and was living up to its mission.

“It is already a year since we were there to commission the Duchess International Hospital.

“I didn’t know I would actually end up being a patient at the Duchess a few months later to test the accuracy of my rather generous praise of the hospital.

“So, be careful when you praise a hospital,’’ he noted.

Osinbajo said he underwent an orthopaedic surgery at Duchess in one of the state-of-the-art theatres there, and spent a week on admission and post-surgery, in perhaps one of the most comfortable hospital accommodations anywhere in the world.

“So, I am possibly the best person to confirm that the Duchess Hospital has proved to be world class, both in the quality of its medical personnel and its management, and that it is living up to its mission.

“I like the way they put it (mission) – to reverse medical tourism by delivering the highest standards of care.

Osinbajo, who inaugurated Duchess International Hospital in 2021, recently returned to the same facility to undergo a successful surgery on his right femur.
