FG accuses States Govts of hampering projects for better supply of electricity

The federal government gas accused some States Governments of hampering projects that are meant to strengthen and expand the national power grid for a better supply of electricity in the country.

The federal government wants affected States to remove the right of way barriers in order to fast-track the expansion and strengthening of the national power grid.

This way, some of the recent disruptions to electric power supply in the country could be avoided.

This was one of the deliberations of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting which held yesterday, where the Council was briefed on the current state of power generation in the country by the Minister of Power, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu.

The Council’s 124th meeting was chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo with State Governors, Federal Ministers and other senior government officials in attendance.

According to a statement released by Laolu Akande Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, Office of the Vice President on Friday, following the meeting, the Minister of Power stressed the need for urgent attention on the issue of State Government’s approval on the Right of Way (ROW) which he disclosed has hampered billions of Naira worth transmission projects that are meant to strengthen and expand the grid for better supply of electricity in the country.

He stated that most of these projects were delayed because of gaps in the implementation of the Right of Way resolutions that State Governments are responsible for and there are currently 32 projects across multiple States stalled or that have been unable to begin post-approval.

Aliyu said the projects account for an investment of $137 million that the Nigerian public is unable to realise value from due to these intractable issues.

RCCG pastor touted as next Soun of Ogbomoso

A pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye has been touted as the next Soun of Ogbomoso.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Pastor Olaoye is among the aspirants, who are all members of Baiyewuwon/Olaoye Ruling House, whose turn it is to produce the next Soun.

According to reports, Ogbomoso kingmakers met on Thursday at Aafin Ogbomoso to have a session with the aspirants with the RCCG pastor’s name ringing loudest.

Recall that the 20th Soun of Ogbomoso, Jimoh Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, joined his ancestors and was interred in December 2021. His death left a vacuum the Ogbomoso kingmakers are striving to fill.

While nothing is cast in stone yet, Pastor Olaoye has been said to be favoured to ascend the throne as the 21st Soun of Ogbomoso. His name has been said to be gaining currency in recent times.

He is said to be very close to Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who both are pastors of RCCG, and is alleged that Osinbajo is rooting for him.

Olaoye pastors RCCG, Jesus House, Washington DC, which is one of the biggest RCCG churches in America and it has earned its respect in that part of the world. It is one of the over 15,000 churches under the RCCG of which Pastor Enoch Adeboye is the General Overseer.

The church is situated in Philadelphia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland, a thriving community rich in ethnic and racial diversity.

Pastor Olaoye is described as “a visionary, motivational speaker and entrepreneur. He is fondly called “Pastor G” and is known for his servant heart and leadership skills.

He was born and raised in Nigeria, and has a degree in English Language and a Masters in Industrial and Labour Relations. He was a successful entrepreneur before the call of God came upon his life to become a Pastor.

Pastor Olaoye has been Pastoring since 1992, where he pastored three RCCG Churches in Nigeria and also RCCG Parish in Bonn, Germany before moving to the United States.

Pastor Ghandi is passionate about helping others develop to their fullest potential; his experience traveling and speaking internationally has helped shape his commitment to showcasing a ministry where people of all racial and ethnic groups worship God in a loving and caring atmosphere.

He is currently the coordinator in charge of Convention and Special Projects for RCCG, North America.

He is happily married to Pastor Omo who also play a key role in running the affairs of the church. His wife, Pastor Omo is the founder and Pastor in charge of the Jesus Women Ministries, a women’s ministry that addresses pertinent women’s issues from birth to old age, with a view to positively affecting these areas in line with the Word of God.

The Jesus Women Ministries is the women’s ministry of the RCCG Jesus House, DC.

Meanwhile, as the selection processes for the next Soun of Ogbomoso hit full gear, the Ogbomoso kingmakers have said no one has been foisted on other contenders.

When contacted, a member of the kingmakers who don’t want his name in print said: “We are not unaware to the news making rounds by some sections of the media that Prince Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye has been selected as the next Soun of Ogbomoso probably because of his association with VP Osinbajo.

“Let it be noted that our selection would never be influenced politically no matter who is involved. Our primary goal is the progress of Ogbomoso.

“Notably, it’s constitutional to pronounce the next Soun of Ogbomoso through the recommendations of the kingmakers and as it stands, no one has been selected.

“Any news regarding the selection would be made known to the public soon by the kingmakers and, therefore, members of the public are enjoined to disregard any fake news in that regard”.

Also, a statement issued on Thursday by illustrious sons of Ogbomoso under the aegis of Concerned Ogbomoso Indigenes has it that under no circumstances should political influence or religious affiliation hinder the smooth running of the selection processes in choosing the next Soun of Ogbomoso, adding that no contender would be foisted on others in the selection.

The group through its spokesperson, Bashir Lawal unequivocally explained that the utmost interest of the kingmakers is to follow due process in line with the provisions of the selection processes and uphold the tradition of their forebears.

He stressed that what Ogbomoso needs is someone that can move the town forward, uphold the culture and tradition, and not someone that is either politically biased or religiously biased.

“Let it be on record that all the 25 contenders who underwent thorough screening are potential Soun-designate and no one would be preferred to other unless the one qualified for the seat.

“If you want to ratify anybody, make it known to us and show us the names of those people that actually did the screening.

“We don’t want fake news and we don’t want anybody that will tamper with our emotions as we are bound to live together as one family.

“We challenge the so-called “Afobaje” to come out and debunk this story to avoid chaos in the town,” the group submitted.

How Oba Balogun earned Olubadan throne – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said the openness and large heart of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Dr) Olalekan Balogun, earned him the throne.

Osinbajo, in his remarks at the installation of Balogun as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, also prophesied that the reign of the traditional ruler would witness greatness.

“He was better prepared for the throne, having been a scholar, former Senator and champion of indigenous culture and community empowerment,” the vice president said.

Osinbajo, while congratulating the new Olubadan, Government of Oyo State, on the coronation, commended the orderliness and unique steps taken in ascending to the throne of Olubadan.

Oba Balogun was installed and presented with the Staff and Instrument of Office by the Oyo State Governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, at exactly 12:32 p.m.

Makinde, in his address, urged the new Ibadan foremost traditional ruler to remain steadfast as the gatekeeper of the Ibadan traditional system.

The governor urged the traditional rulers, as custodians of the traditional system, not to play politics with the system.

He said that no politician, no matter how highly placed, could destroy any system without the cooperation of members of the system.

Makinde implored Balogun and the Olubadan-In-Council to work toward ensuring that the laws, having to do with the ascension to the throne of Olubadan, remain sacrosanct.

He advised the Olubadan-In-Council to be self-conceived and remain self-regulated without any external interference from the political class if there was going to be any amendment in the laws.

The governor said further that he had always taken a stand for the integrity of traditional systems.

“And so, I am, especially delighted that today, Friday, March 11, the sanctity of the emergence of this century-old dynasty, has been restored.

“His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr) Moshood Olalekan Ishola Balogun Alli, Okumade II, has distinguished himself as an excellent professional.

“He has without doubt contributed and will continue to contribute to the development of Ibadanland and Oyo State at large.

“He has served both in private and public service and has even represented Oyo State at the Senate.

“He is indeed a man of many parts and so, we rejoice that His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr) Moshood Olalekan Ishola Balogun Alli Okumade II, climbed the 22 steps on the Olubadan line, starting from the lowest rung of Jagun Olubadan over a period of 39 years.

“We rejoice because His Imperial Majesty having seen how things were when politics became a factor in the ascension to the throne, is in a great position to defend the traditions of our people and ensure that this does not happen again.

“And, I want to restate that though, we politicians will come and go, sometimes, to satisfy our political whims, we may make decisions that do not protect our traditional systems.

“But, this is why the custodians of our culture must always take a stand preventing us from tinkering with the age-old traditional systems.

“So, I join Oyo State Government, sons and daughters of Ibadan and good people of Oyo State to wish the Imperial Majesty a peaceful and successful reign,” Makinde said.

Highlights of the event was the traditional homages to the new Olubadan, led by Otun Olubadan, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, followed by other members of the Olubadan-in-Council, Council of Iyalodes, Mogajis, religious leaders, among others.

London trip: Buhari hands power to Osinbajo

President Muhammadu Buhari has handed power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and said his absence from the country would not affect the running of government.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports President Buhari made this known when he fielded questions from State House correspondents shortly before departing Abuja for London on Sunday.

Buhari stressed that Vice President Osinbajo would be in charge, and he would be assisted by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as well as his Chief of Staff.

”Well, I cannot claim to be doing the work alone. The government is fully represented – the Vice-President is there, constitutionally when I’m away he’s in charge; and the Secretary to the government and then the chief of staff. So, no problem,” the president said.

When asked, Buhari dismissed the assertion that the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) lacks the capacity to conduct its national convention on March 26, saying the party will surprise its critics.

”Well, they (critics) should wait and see. How did we come as a party to take power from the ruling party who had been there before us for so many years? So, we have the capacity, everything will be alright,” he said.

TNG reports Buhari had initially planned to embark on the London trip from Nairobi, Kenya after attending the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) at 50 in that country on Friday.

The president’s spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, had on March 1, in a statement said that the president’s trip to London for routine medical checks, would ”last for a maximum of two weeks.”

  • We are not happy – Delta monarch, Ovie of Uvwie tells Osinbajo

We are not happy – Delta monarch, Ovie of Uvwie tells Osinbajo

The Ovie of Uvwie, Dr Emmanuel Sideso (Abe I) has used the opportunity of the visit of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to his palace to express displeasure over the issue of constitutional role for the traditional rulers that was not considered by the National Assembly.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Vice President Osinbajo was in Delta State for the thanksgiving Mass of late Chief Patrick Ideh, a renowned legal practitioner and nationalist who passed away at the age of 95.

The thanksgiving Mass was held at the Mother of The Redeemer Catholic Church, Effurun, Warri.

After the Mass, the vice president, accompanied by Delta Deputy Governor, Kingsley Otuaro, paid courtesy visits to the palaces of the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, and Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

Receiving the vice president in his palace, Sideso thanked Osinbajo for his respect for traditional rulers.

He, however, said that traditional rulers in the country are not happy that the issue of constitutional role for the traditional rulers was not considered by the National Assembly.

“You have always been there for us; I am the Chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Summit in Abuja.

“The last summit we held, you represented the president; you physically came and stayed with us throughout the summit.

“On behalf of the traditional rulers in the whole country, we are appealing to you and the president to look at this again; I don’t think it is too late to look at it and perhaps call us and advice us on why it cannot be done at the moment.

“We are the grassroots people; and if there is any problem, you people come to us and seek our prayers because you are our children,’’ he said.

He urged the vice president to intervene in the quest for a constitutional role for the traditional institution.

In his response, Osinbajo said he was in the kingdom to honour late Chief Ideh who is an illustrious son.

The vice president said he is hopeful that the National Assembly would eventually attend to the question of constitutional role for traditional rulers.

“But I think that there is a genuine desire by traditional rulers to be more intricately involved; to be more directly involved in governance and government in Nigeria.

“And just going by the track record that we see even in this kingdom, it is very evident that your role has been instrumental in keeping the peace here.

“So, I think traditional rulership is so important in keeping law and order and in maintaining peace in all of our communities.’’

At the palace of Olu of Warri, Osinbajo congratulated Atuwatse for ascending to the throne of his fathers.

He said the traditional institution has a vital role to play in addressing the security challenges in the country.

“As you know, coming into office, we had on top of our agenda, as the president stated, the economy, security, governance, and corruption.

“The role of the traditional council, the traditional rulership in our country is critical to security; absolutely critical and I am happy that this is something that you also, not only recognises, but accept as a major function of the traditional rulership.’’

Osinbajo said that he and the deputy governor had worked extensively in some of the conflicts in oil producing communities that had led to a decline in oil production.

He said that they were able to achieve results by going round to speak to various communities.

“We want to see that security challenges; oil theft and some of what we are seeing in the Delta and in many of our oil producing communities are swiftly brought to an end,’’ he said.

Atuwatse had earlier in his welcome remarks, said that Osinbajo’s visit was divine as it coincided with the end of the week the kingdom visited Itsekiri communities in other parts of Nigeria, including Ogun and Kogi States.

According to him, there is an affinity between Itsekiri people and Osinbajo as the vice president is their in-law through his marriage to late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s granddaughter.

In response to the vice president’s remarks, Atuwase said that traditional rulers were committed to ensuring security and unhindered oil production.

“I am very happy that our deputy governor is here and will bear witness to our commitment to not only security in this axis but in ensuring that the oil production here does not dwindle, especially now with global events – oil is now approaching US$120 per barrel.

“And Nigeria has to, as much as it can, benefit from that development; not quite long ago, we did something unprecedented.

“Traditional rulers are here to ensure that they are bridge builders between government and the people.

“We have committed ourselves to ensuring that where we had a hitch in Ogidigben — where the production was shut down, we have committed ourselves to making sure that not only are things restored but the International Oil Companies (IOCs) commitment to the community, which as the cause of the breakdown, is finally resolved.’’

He said he is willing to collaborate with the Federal Government in ensuring lasting peace and transforming the Niger-Delta region.

“Please, let the president know that once there is anything that resembles a security situation, he can call on us and he has our full cooperation,’’ Atuwatse said.
