    Yobe State University gets acting Vice Chancellor

    The Governing Council of Yobe State University, Damaturu, has approved the appointment of Prof. Bukar Jamri as the acting Vice Chancellor (VC) of the institution.

    Hajiya Uwani-Mamuda,  the university’s Director, Information, said in a statement in Damaturu on Wednesday  that the appointment would take effect from Feb 13.

    According to her, Jamri’s appointment followed the expiration of the tenure of Prof. Mala Daura, the incumbent VC of the university.

    She said the council also approved the appointment of Malam Garba Girgir, as the acting Registrar of the institution, with effect from Jan. 15.

    The director said that the two appointments were approved at an extraordinary meeting of the council on Wednesday. Until his appointment, Jamri was the Deputy VC, Administration, of the institution.

    Police promote spokesman, 75 others in Yobe

    The Police Command in Yobe has promoted its spokesman, Mr Dungus Abdulkarim, and 75 other officers to new ranks.

    The newly-promoted officers were decorated by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Garba Ahmed, in Damaturu on Monday.

    Ahmed said that Abdulkarim and six others were promoted to Superintendents of Police (SPs) from Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs).

    He said nine officers were promoted to Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) from SPs while 60 others got promoted to DSPs from Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs).

    The police commissioner urged the officers to reciprocate the gesture through their loyalty and enhanced productivity.

    “You become loyal by adhering strictly to the procedures of the job.

    “Without adhering to the procedures of the job, no matter your performance, you will end up in a wrong track,” he said.

    Ahmed warned the officers against ethno-religious sentiments in the discharge of their duties.

    “Live above board and avoid tribal, religious and personal sentiments.

    “Those of you that who arrived at the coat of arm symbol of the federation, you should know your level. You can be asked to stand in for the commissioner of police.

    “Therefore, you must behave in accordance with the rank you are wearing,” he said.

    Speaking after the decoration, Abdulkarim expressed gratitude for the promotion and promised to redouble his efforts.

    “Promotion comes with additional responsibilities. I am aware of that and ready to perform the duties assigned to me without fear or favour,” he said.

    The spokesman promised to rigorously implement community policing through effective collaboration with critical stakeholders.

    Yobe to employ over 400 health workers

    Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe, has approved the employment of 424 health professionals to bolster medical facilities across the state.

    Alhaji Mamman Mohammed, Buni’s Director-General Press and Media Affairs, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Damaturu on Tuesday.

    He said 205 of the employed workers were Nurses and Midwives, who graduated from the state-owned Shehu Sule College of Nursing and Midwifery, Damaturu.

    “Similarly, the governor has approved the employment of 219 Health Technicians with specialty in different fields to meet the professional requirements of the state’s hospitals.

    “The newly employed health workers are to be deployed to both rural and urban areas towards providing efficient health services to people across the state,” Mohammed said.

    The governor’s aide noted that the employment was in line with Buni-administration’s policy of providing accessible and affordable healthcare services to the people.

    He charged the new workers to be loyal, disciplined and dedicated to their duty to justify government’s investment as well as confidence reposed in them.

    Mohammed said the governor assured that healthcare service delivery would continue to be on the priority list of his administration.

    “Buni noted that government would continue to provide hospitals with required facilities, medical consumables, and qualified staff for continuous improvement of healthcare delivery in the state,” he assured.

    Yobe records 4 new polio cases

    The Yobe Government says it has recorded four new cases of polio in three Local Government Areas (LGAs), three years after the state was declared polio-free.

    The Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr Babagana Kundi-Machina, disclosed this while launching a campaign against the disease in Machina, a border LGA with Niger Republic, on Saturday.

    “It is unfortunate that after three years of being certified polio-free, we have recorded a circulating polio virus outbreak in Bursari, Machina, and Yusufari LGAs,” Kundi-Machina said.

    He said that the State Government, in collaboration with its partners, had launched a state-wide outbreak response and vaccination exercise to address the situation.

    The State Coordinator of WHO, Dr Hamisu Alhassan, pledged the organisation’s support to the state toward containing the outbreak.

    Alhassan urged the public to adopt preventive measures, including personal and environmental hygiene, handwashing, and immunisation to boost immunity and promote good health, especially among women and children.

    The Emir of Machina, Alhaji Bashir Machinama, advised his people to cooperate with the government by accepting the vaccine.

    Machinama thanked the State Government for its prompt response and pledged to sensitise his community to take relevant steps to contain the disease.

    24-year-old Nigerian man kills business partner over N500k loan

    A 24-year-old man identified as Yunusa Isa, who killed his business partner, Lawan Adamu, over a N500,000 loan, has been arrested by the Yobe State Police Command. 

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) learnt that 28-year-old Lawan was discovered brutally murdered on Sunday, September 15, 2024, on the outskirts of Nayi Nawa bypass in Damaturu.

    At the scene, Adamu’s dead body was found with deep throat cuts and multiple stab wounds with the instrument used for the attack.

     Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the suspect initially denied involvement in the murder, but upon intense interrogation by State CID Detectives, he confessed to the crime.

    The statement reads: Recall that, On September 16, 2024, the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters apprehended Yunus Isa, 24, of Shago Tara, Nayi Nawa Ward, for allegedly k!lling Lawan Adamu.

     “Initially, the suspect denied involvement despite overwhelming circumstantial evidence. However, following intense interrogation by State CID detectives, Yunus Isa confessed to the crime.

     “Investigation revealed that Lawan Adamu was his employer and business partner in the engine oil trade.

     “He borrowed N500,000 from Adamu last year with a profit-sharing agreement.

     “However, when he failed to meet the agreement terms, Adamu demanded repayment.

     “Isa callously m8rdered Lawan Adamu to avoid repaying the debt, k!lling him in cold blood.

     “The swift resolution of this case demonstrates our commitment to justice and public safety.”

    Yobe govt issues fresh flood alert to 9 LGAs

    The Yobe State Government has issued a fresh flood alert to nine Local Government Areas of the state due to impending release of water from Dadinkowa and Lagdo dams. The LGAs are Nguru, Bade, Karasuwa, Jakusko, Yusufari, Geidam, Tarmuwa, Bursari, Machina, Gujba and Fune.

    Dr Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), gave the warning in a statement in Damaturu on Tuesday. He noted that the release of water from the two dams would add to the predicaments of residents of the areas, who were already affected by recent flood triggered by days of torrential rain.

    “Yobe has experienced significant flooding between April 15 and Sept. 9 2024, causing widespread devastation across several local government areas. This advisory serves as an early warning alert for further flooding due likely impending discharge of water from Dadinkowa dam, Hadeja-Jama’are River, River Kamodugu, and Lagdo dam in Cameroon,” Goje said.

    The executive secretary advised residents of the areas to take precautionary measures, including moving to higher grounds to save their lives and property.

    “Stay informed by regularly listening to updates from traditional leaders, local government authorities and the state emergency management agency. Keep emergency contact details handy for quick access to response services,” he advised.

    Over 19,000 households across 432 communities have so far been hit by flood in the state.

    Flood: 20 dead, 2,000 displaced in Yobe

    Twenty people have died, and over 2,000 displaced, following devastating flood that have swept through Bade Local Government Area of Yobe since early August, according to the council chairman, Alhaji Babagana Ibrahim.

    Speaking in Gashua, Ibrahim said most of the victims were trapped beneath debris from collapsed mud houses. The floods have destroyed more than 10,000 houses and farmlands in over 200 communities.

    Among the hardest-hit villages are Misilli, Lawan Musa, Dagona, Dala, Katuzu, and Sabongarin Gashua. The displaced are currently sheltered in three camps: Goodluck, Zango 2, and Babuje, with the council providing food despite limited resources.

    Former Senate President, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, donated N10 million to support the victims, while the state government is distributing non-food relief items.

    Ibrahim called on the federal government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to step in as the number of affected residents continues to grow.

    “The scale of this disaster is beyond Bade’s capacity to handle. We urgently need federal intervention,” he pleaded.

    Twenty persons have died as a result of devastating floods that ravaged Bade Local Government Area of Yobe since early August, its Chairman, Alhaji Babagana Ibrahim, has said. Ibrahim disclosed on Friday in Gashua that most of the deceased were people trapped under the debris of collapsed mud houses.

    Ibrahim said that the flood destroyed more than 10,000 houses and farmlands across 200 communities. The chairman listed villages worst hit by the disaster to include Misilli, Lawan Musa, Dagona, Dala, Katuzu and Sabongarin Gashua.

    He said that 2,000 persons displaced by the flood were taking shelter in three camps in Gashua. He listed the camps as Goodluck, Zango 2 and Babuje. Ibrahim said the council, despite its meager resources, had been feeding the displaced persons since they came to the camps.

    He said that Sen. Ahmed Lawa, former Senate President, recently donated N10 million to the victims, while the state was already distributing non-food items to the victims. He urged the federal government to come to the aid of the flood victims whose population was increasing by the day.

    “The magnitude of this disaster is so enormous and Bade has no capacity to manage it. That is why I am appealing to the federal government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to come to our aid as the number of displaced persons continues to rise,” he said.

    The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has said that 2,517 houses and shops were either completely or partially destroyed by flood which ravaged 33 communities in the State. Mr Ibrahim Nalado, the Deputy Director, Relief and Rehabilitation of the agency, disclosed this in an interview on Saturday in Gombe.

    Nalado said that the communities affected were in Dukku, Funakaye and Billiri Local Government Areas (LGAs), of the state. According to him, these areas were flooded due to the heavy downpour that occured between Aug. 12 and Aug. 22.

    He said, “In Dukku LGA, 10 communities were affected. In Funakaye LGA, 20 communities were affected and in Billiri LGA, three communities were affected.”

    Nalado said that the flooding and windstorm affected mostly houses and few farmlands in the communities. He said that there was no loss of life but two children were injured in Dukku, including seven animals which were washed away.

    On the impact of flooding on farmlands, the deputy director said Hina community in Yamaltu/Deba LGA of the state was the worst-hit. He said that not less than 1000 hectares of rice, maize, sorghum and millet farmlands were submerged in water.

    The deputy director stated that his team visited Hina community on Friday, Aug. 30, to assess the level of damage. Nalado described the impact of the flooding as ‘huge and devastating’ in view of the vast area affected.

    “Farmers were getting ready to harvest their crops. The farmers were so worried but because it was a natural phenomenon, they accepted it in good fate,” he said.

    The deputy director stated that data on the number of farmers affected by the flood were being collated at Hina. Nalado stated that his agency had assessed the level of damage and were compiling the reports to forward to the state government and other relevant agencies.

    He, however, said that the level of damage on farmlands at Hina would take collective efforts of both the state and the Federal Government to address. He appealed to the North East Development Commission and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to support the state government in this regard.

    The deputy director also appealed to the farmers and other persons affected to be patient.

    He assured them that government and  other government agencies would come to their aid.

    Flood destroyed 1,650 houses in 2 towns in Yobe, says SEMA

    Flood triggered by days of torrential rain, destroyed 1,650 houses in Jajere and Yunusari towns of Yobe. Dr Mohammed Goje, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), made this known in an in Damaturu on Saturday.

    He said that a total of 413 households in the areas were displaced by the latest flash flood. Goje said that a final assessment on the destruction caused by yet another flood in Yusufari, Wagir, Mutai Chirokusko, Bade and Potiskum towns was ongoing.

    “SEMA is conducting daily review meetings to asses the situation, update stakeholders and come up with immediate response plan in line with vulnerabilities of affected locations and resources available on ground,” he said.

    The executive secretary said arrangements had reached advanced stage to deliver relief materials to the affected communities in the next 24 to 48 hours as directed by Gov Mai Mala Buni. Goje said cash disbursement to the victims would soon begin as “community keepers” were already validating the list of beneficiaries to ensure transparency and accountability in the exercise.

    Yobe health workers suspend strike

    The Joint Association of Medical and Health Workers Union in Yobe has suspended the strike it started on Friday morning.

    The workers went on strike demanding the payment of their hazard allowances approved by the state government in 2019.

    The union’s Chairman in the state, Satomi Hikama, disclosed this to journalists in Damaturu on Friday.

    He said the strike was called off after the leadership of the union reached an agreement with the state government.

    “We embarked on strike action this morning to demand the implementation of our hazard allowances, which a circular was issued during the COVID-19 outbreak to be implemented across the country.

    “In Yobe, only few individuals are currently enjoying this allowances and other demands.

    “After meeting with the Deputy Governor, Idi Barde-Gubana, the strike action has now been suspended as government pledged to implement the allowances by September ending 2024,” Hikama said.

    Members of the union include the Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, and National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwifery.
