  • Yobe school attack: FG confirms 110 Dapchi girls unaccounted

    The Federal Government on Sunday confirmed that 110 schoolgirls of Government Girls Technical School Dapchi, were unaccounted for in the Boko Haram attack on the school last Monday.

    Alhaji Lai Mohammed, minister of information, disclosed this to newsmen in Damaturu after a closed door meeting between a federal government delegation,Yobe government, security agencies, community leaders and parents of the missing schoolgirls.

    “It was a meeting between stakeholders to get a first hand information and, out of the total register of 906 students in school that day, 110 students are unaccounted” he said.

    The minister said far reaching decisions were reached among which included the deployment of police and Civil Defence Corps to all schools.

    He said security agencies were synergizing to ensure the rescue of every student abducted by the insurgents.

    “No stone will be left unturned in our determination to rescue these girls” the minister assured.

    He said the federal, state governments and parents would collaborate with security agents to work towards successful rescue of the students.

    Mohammed reiterated that the insurgents were being contained and now looking for soft targets.

    “Government will remain focused and resolute in the fight against insurgency to rescue the students and every Nigerian in their custody.”

    Government Girls Technical College Dapchi was last Monday attacked by Boko Haram insurgents and, abducted the schoolgirls.

     

  • Stakeholders to get update on search for missing Dapchi girls – Lai Mohammed

    Security officials and other stakeholders are to get an update on the search for the missing Dapchi girls of the Government Science and Technical Girls College, Yobe.

    The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this in a statement signed in Damaturu on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Segun Adeyemi

    Mohammed and the Minister of Interior, Lt. – Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd) who led the Federal Government delegation arrived in Damaturu earlier on Sunday.

    The Minister said the delegation would meet with state government officials, and Principal of the school to know the update on the missing school girls.

    He recalled that it was the second time in four days that a Federal Government delegation would visit Yobe over the issue of the missing Dapchi girls.

    More than One hundred girls were reported missing after suspected Boko Haram terrorist group attacked the school on Monday.

     

  • JUST IN: Again, presidential delegation arrives Yobe for missing #DapchiGirls

    A presidential delegation led by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, and his counterpart in the interior ministry, Abdulrahman Dambazau, have arrived Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

    TheNewsGuru reports this is the second time a presidential delegation will visit the state after Lai Mohammed first visit the state on Thursday over the issue of the missing Dapchi girls to get an update on the search for the girls.

  • No abducted schoolgirl rescued yet – Yobe governor Gaidam

    The Yobe state Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, has faulted the claim that the Nigerian Army’s rescued some of the girls of the Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, Yobe state who were abducted by Boko Haram terrorist on Monday.

    The Governor who visited Dapchi town on Thursday, however, said, contrary to the claim, that no girl has been rescued yet. Yobe State Governor, Gaidam The Boko Haram terrorists had attacked the girls’ college on Monday and abducted many of the girls.

    While 48 of them were said to have been rescued by the army, another 111 of them were reportedly still missing after the attack. A statement signed by Abdullahi Bego, the Director-General, Press Affairs to Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, on Wednesday, claimed that some of the girls were rescued and were then in the custody of the Nigerian Army.

    According to the statement, “The Yobe State Government hereby informs the public that some of the girls at Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) whose school was attacked by Boko Haram terrorists last Monday have been rescued by gallant officers and men of the Nigerian Army from the terrorists who abducted them. “The rescued girls are now in the custody of the Nigerian Army.

    We will provide more details about their number and condition in due course. “His Excellency, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, who is very grateful for the gallantry and hard work of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army involved in the operation, is monitoring the situation closely and will make a statement in due course” the statement said.

    However, after visiting Dapchi community bon Thursday, Governor Gaidam faulted the claim that the Nigerian Army rescued some of the girls. He said, In fact, that none of the abducted girls has been rescued.

    A Dapchi resident, Abdul Dapchi, whose two sisters were among the abducted girls, lamented to newsmen that the community became infuriated at Governor Gaidam after his confession that no girl was actually recued.

    He said, “We were all angry. How could they have deceived us all along?” The Governor is said to have pleaded with the affected family members and the people of the community to keep praying to God for the release of their daughters.

  • BREAKING: Military rescue abducted Yobe school girls inside bush

    The Nigerian Military have rescued the abducted Yobe school girls on Wednesday night.

    They were rescued at Jilli-Muwarti, a border village between Gaidam in Yobe state and Borno State.

    It is still unclear how many of the girls they rescued.

    Mr. Abdullahi Bego, Director-General Press Affairs to Governor Ibrahim Gaidam said the girls were currently in the custody of the Nigerian military.

    “The Yobe State Government hereby informs the public that some of the girls at Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) whose school was attacked by Boko Haram terrorists last Monday have been rescued by gallant officers and men of the Nigerian Army from the terrorists who abducted them.

    “The rescued girls are now in the custody of the Nigerian Army. We will provide more details about their number and condition in due course.

    “Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, who is very grateful for the gallantry and hard work of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army involved in the operation, is monitoring the situation closely and will make a statement in due course,” ‎he said.

    The students are expected to undergo medical check-up before proceeding to Damaturu, the state capital.

    The girls were abducted when suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, in Yobe State.

     

  • Just in: 48 of 94 missing Yobe school girls return – Yobe Govt

    The Yobe state government has announced the return of Forty-Eight out of the missing ninety-four students from Government Girls Technical College, Dapchi.

    This was made known by the state commissioner of education, Mohammed Lamin, who disclosed that while 28 of the missing students returned on Tuesday night, 20 more returned on Wednesday morning.

    “This has brought down the 94 missing students realised at the yesterday headcount to 48 this morning. “We are still hopeful that more are returning soon”, he said.

  • Parents storm Yobe school, evacuate students over Boko Haram attack

    Parents of the students of Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe state, have started evacuating their children.

    This is as a result of the attack on the school by Boko Haram.

    Ninety-four students have been reportedly missing after the raid which happened on Monday night.

    Out of fear, parents started arriving the school as early as 7am on Tuesday, according to The Cable.

    Babagana Gujba, a parent, said he decided to take away his daughter because of her safety.

    “I can not risk my daughter for anybody. She will not return to this school until adequate security measures are put in place,” Gujba told TheCable.

    Muhammad Ismaila, an official of the college, said most students and teachers fled to nearby communities.

    He, however, said he could not confirm if some girls were abducted.

    “Some of our students ran as far as 15- 25 kilometers. We have 1,000 students in this school. As I speak to you, some have returned,” Ismaila said.

    “Efforts are in place to locate those that are still at large. We are not certain whether any of the girls were abducted or not. The state government has closed the school for one week because of the incident.”

    Aisha Kachalla, one of the students who fled, narrated the incident to TheCable.

    “Immediately we started hearing sporadic gunshots, we realised that all was not well. We did not wait for anyone to tell us what was going on before taking to our heels,” Kachalla said.

    “I can’t remain in this school, I just want to go home. I am scared.”

    The attack on the school happened a few days after the army placed a N3 million bounty on Abubakar Shekau, leader of the insurgent group.

     

  • Yobe attack: ‘Over 90 students allegedly missing after Boko Haram invasion’

    About ninety four students are missing after suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked a girls’ secondary school in Yobe state Monday night.

    The attack on Government Girls Secondary School Dapchi came after sunset when some of the students were breaking their fast which they usually observe on Mondays.

    Aishatu Abdullahi, one of the schoolgirls that escaped Boko Haram’s Monday attack on Dapchi town of Yobe State, has said some of the girls were abducted.

    According to her, not all the girls escaped the armed insurgents’ attack.

    The Police in Yobe state on Tuesday disclosed that no life was lost in yesterday’s attack on Government Girls’ Secondary School, GGSS, Dapchi, in Bursari LGA of Yobe state, by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.

    The Yobe state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdulmaliki Sumonu revealed that there has so far not been any report of abduction of any of the girls in the school.

    The insurgents had attacked the town on Monday and carted away foodstuffs at the College, while firing sporadically forcing staff and students to flee for safety.

    The traumatised school girl told Premium Times that she saw some of the girls being whisked away by the armed men.

    Aishatu, who spoke in Hausa said: “My name is Aishatu Abdullahi. I am a Senior Secondary (SS) student of GGSS Dapchi.

    “I was in the school when the Boko Haram insurgents came at exactly the time we were preparing to break our usual Monday fast. They were shooting guns and everyone was confused; then we started running helter skelter but they were able to. We saw some people pushing some of the students to enter their vehicles.

    “There were no soldiers at the time of the invasion. It was later after the principal placed a call that some soldiers came and then we began to see helicopter hovering around the village.

    ”We were in the mosque when the Boko Haram gunmen came into the town. According to the accounts of some of my mates, the Boko Haram told those that were caught in the mosque to sit on the floor, including our teachers. One of our teacher was injured in his leg and hand – I don’t know if it was from gunshot. We don’t know what later happened, the gunmen later left the people in the mosque.

    In another report published by Daily Trust, a source in the school reportedly claim that the number of missing students was established in the afternoon after a head count.

    “After the roll call, 610 out the total number of 704 students have returned. We are still searching for the remaining 94 students.

    “We cannot say, because the insurgents went into the students’ hostel, and many of these students scaled the fence and escaped into the bushes. No one can tell if they are abducted or not.” The source revealed

    Yobe state civil servants to benefit N300m furniture loan in 2018

    The Yobe Government has earmarked N300 million as furniture loan to be granted civil servants on its payroll in 2018.
    The state Head of Service, Alhaji Saleh Abubakar, disclosed this to newsmen in Damaturu on Friday.

    Abubakar said the loan would be a revolving programme to enable every eligible civil servant access the funds.

    The head of service said government was up to date in payment of pension and gratuity to retired state civil servants, while local government retirees would be settled next year.

    “Government is working hard to complete verification of local government retirees to commence payment of their entitlements,” he said.

    Abubakar said the state service was evolving new skills with new ideas to improve service delivery to move the state forward, stressing that “it is now an idea driven service”.

    According to him, many state civil servants will be retiring in 2018 to create more employment opportunities for youths.

    “Most of the civil servants inherited from old Borno state will be retiring by next year, which means, more vacancies will be created for youths in 2018,” he said.

  • Panic as suspected Boko Haram insurgents attack Yobe village

    Suspected members of Boko Haram sect on Tuesday attacked Sasawa village in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Abdulmaliki Sumonu, confirmed to newsmen that the village was attacked on Tuesday night.

    “The attack happened on Tuesday night; we are still working on the details,” Summonu said.

    The attack came after a long time of relative peace enjoyed across the state.

    Most people displaced by the insurgency had returned to their communities and engaged in agricultural activities to boost their resettlement and rehabilitation.
