He also appealed to the state government to come to their aid and take action against a company he claimed was mining in the area.

According to him, the source of the water was not only because of the rain but because of a dam constructed by the company.

Yakubu Musa, a resident of Modire, urged the state government to upgrade a major culvert in the area into a bridge to enable it to accommodate large flow of water.

“There’s also the need to open some water ways blocked by some people engaged in rice farming in the area”, Musa said.

Meanwhile, many displaced persons have started taking refuge in emergency camps and primary schools.

  • Corp members not substituting striking doctors- FMC Yola

Corp members not substituting striking doctors- FMC Yola

The Federal Medical Centre, Yola on Tuesday, discredited claims that medical doctors on mandatory one year national youth service had replaced striking resident doctors at the tertiary health facility.

The centre, which has since assumed the status of a teaching hospital, denied the involvement of corpers posted to the institution as a way to combat the strike action embarked by National Association of Resident Doctors across the country.

Head of Information Unit at the FMC, Yola, Mohammed Dodo, said it had fewer than five corps members at the health facility.

Condemning a news report which said corps members replaced striking resident doctors at the medical centre, Dodo, who said it is unthinkable, wondered how fewer than five corps members could replace more than 100 principal medical officers and consultants who form the core of its health care professionals at the center.

He said, “Medical care givers at the facility are largely pooled from our corps of consultants. How can corps members, who are even less than five and without prior intensive varied medical experiences, replace over 100 striking professionals in a teaching hospital?”

He also noted that some news reports even went as far as saying the late elder statesman, Ahmed Joda, was attended to by some corps members.

He clarified that usually when there’s a strike action such as the one embarked upon by resident doctors, the facility relies on several doctors from the rank of principal medical officers(PMO) and above, including consultants with some corps members who are under strict supervision of senior doctors, “doing all that they can to attend to patients.”

Adding that, “The workloads are overwhelming on these category care givers who will also have to cover the duties of the striking doctors. This is to say that the entire service windows still remain open despite the strike action. The admission wards, the Accident and Emergency Unit, the Emergency Paediatric Unit (EPU), the NHIS, the Labour Ward, Laboratories, the Intensive Care Unit and the surgical theatres among other service windows have not stopped. But that is not to say the strike action hasn’t affected our operations. But to say corps members had replaced the core of our medical corps, when there are are no fewer than five corps members, is uncharitable and speculative.”

A Magistrate’s Court in Yola on Thursday remanded Aminu Yar’Adua, 36, the son of late former President Musa Yar’Adua, in prison for allegedly killing four people in an auto crash in Yola.

Yar’Adua, a student of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Yola, was charged to court for allegedly causing death by dangerous driving on 23 June, 2021.

According to the police First Information Report (FIR) tendered in court by the prosecutor, Insp. Zakka Musa, the accused had, while driving along Yola bye pass on 23 June, 2021 , crushed six people as a result of over speeding.

The court heard that four of the victims were killed and the other two were injured in the accident, with the victims all hailing from Sabon Pegi, Yola South Local Government Area.

” Those that died in the accident were identified as; Aisha Umar (30), Aisha Mamadu (32), Suleiman Abubakar(2) and Jummai Abubakar (30), while, Rejoice Annu (28) and Hajara Aliyu(27) sustained injuries”, according to the FIR.

The prosecuting officer told the court that the relatives of late Aisha Umar, Suleiman Abubakar and Jummai Abubakar had demanded the sum of N15 million from the defendant as compensation.

But, when the FIR was read to the defendant as prayed by the prosecutor, he denied committing the offence, describing the allegation as untrue.

At that point, the prosecutor pleaded with the court to adjourn the matter, to enable him duplicate the case file and forward to the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The Magistrate, Jummai Ibrahim granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to 19th August, 2021, for further mention, and ordered that the ex-president’s son be remanded in prison custody until then.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the late Yar’Adua was president of Nigeria from May 29 2007 – May 5, 2010.

  • Atiku’s media company gives reason for employees’ sack on Workers’ Day

Atiku’s media company gives reason for employees’ sack on Workers’ Day

Gotel Communications Limited, the Yola-based media company which issued sack letters to scores of its staff on workers Day, May 1, has stated reason for it.

The company, a firm of television and radio station owned by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, said the sack of staff was a result of a restructuring exercise, a process which started last year.

The company had handed sack letters to at least 46 of its staff on Friday when workers worldwide were marking Workers Day.

The affected staff had faulted the number of sacked workers: while some said they were over 50, others said although the initial list contained 56 staff, it was thinned down to 46.

A statement giving reason for the sack was silent on the number of those affected. The statement, signed by the General Manager of the company, Mohammed El-Yakub, and entitled, ‘Rationalisation of staff in Gotel, outcome of long standing company restructuring,’ said Atiku Abubakar had no personal hand in the Friday layoff of workers.

The statement said, “The rationalisation of staff at Gotel Communications Limited, a company under the umbrella of Priam Group, is a culmination of the restructuring process in the companies under our Group.

The founder of companies under the Priam had announced that many of his business concerns will be aggregated under the Priam Group. Priam Group had embarked on a restructuring exercise which led to a merger of many companies under its umbrella.

“Other components of the restructuring includes rationalization of workforce and thus some members of staff of the group would be laid off, with their full disengagement benefits paid to them.”

It stressed that the current decision to “right size” the workforce in Gotel Communication Limited is the climax of the on-going restructuring exercise which was initiated last year.

It said it was out of context “to ascribe any mundane presupposition for being responsible for the decision to lay off some of the workforce in Gotel Communication Limited,” and explained that following the unveiling of Priam Group last year, Atiku Abubakar ceased to be involved in the running of the affairs of his companies.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Adamawa State, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, told newsmen that the incident occurred at 4 am.

He said the medical doctor packed into his house recently while it was still being worked on.

“It is an uncompleted building. The doctor packed into it, we understand, because he was tired of paying rent where he was.

He said the police had moved into action by mobilising men and officials to go after the kidnappers and free the doctor.

  • Gunmen kidnap another Nigerian professor in Yola

Gunmen have abducted a lecturer of the Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH), Allan Kadams, a few weeks after the kidnap and release of a colleague.

Confirming the incident, the Registrar of the University, Halima Muhammmad told journalists in Yola Tuesday that the kidnappers stormed the private residence of the professor at Bajabure federal housing estate around 2 a.m. on Monday while he was asleep ”and whisked him away”.

Muhammmad said the chief security officer of the university is already liaising with the family of the professor to ascertain whether they had received a demand for ransom.

Recall that about two weeks ago, another professor, Ibrahim Zata, was also kidnapped by unknown gunmen at his private residence in Girei. He was released after the payment of a ransom.

Spokesman of the police command in the state, Othman Abubakar said that the command had received an official complaint on the matter and has since detailed its men to search for the teacher.
