Alaafin should have been buried in the traditional way – Traditionalist

Oba Adetoyese Olakisan a traditionalist has frowned at the open display of the corpse of late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, saying that he should not have been displayed outside for people to see before being buried.

The traditionalist made his position known on Sunday adding that the late Alaafin wasn’t installed by the church or mosque.

He noted that the same process that brought him in as Alaafin should have been used to bury him to avoid any kind of repercussions.

The traditionalist who is an Ogboni chief expressed concern about the incessant death of Monarchs in the South-Western region of the country, although admitted some were already old.

He, however, insisted that the monarchs were not old to remain on the throne if certain things were done according to the traditions of Yoruba people.

He warned against surrendering Yoruba traditional religion to the domination of foreign religions to avoid negative consequences.

“During the installation of the Oba, he was not installed in church or mosque. A process was followed before his installation. How his corpse was displayed outside during a prayer session by some Islamic clerics is against the tradition. It is a taboo.

“So many Obas are passing on. These are Obas that were installed in a proper Yoruba way. These monarchs that died were not too old to remain alive. They are Obas. They should live long.

“We have allowed foreign religion to dominate our own traditional religion. We didn’t start as Muslim or Christian. We all started as traditionalists. We should return to our traditional ways of handling certain situations,” He lamented.

The Yoruba Nation, Middle Belt; Biafran agitators; ex-aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri among other aggrieved Nigerians staged a grand protest against President Muhammadu Buhari-led government on Friday.

The protesters also condemned the United Nations’ silence on the self-determination efforts of Nigerians was no longer golden.

While addressing the protesters, Omokri listed some of the failures of Buhari since he assumed power.

He asserted that Buhari is responsible for the depreciation of the naira.

Omokri stressed that the continued loans collected by the Buhari-led government was responsible for the depreciation of the naira.

He also talked about the killings, insecurity challenges in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, some people also gathered themselves to stage counter-protests at the headquarters of the United Nations as President Muhammadu Buhari addressed the UN General Assembly.

While the agitators of Yoruba Nation and Biafra continued their protests, the other group under OneNation also held theirs.

Another protester, Omo Oba added that the protest is to show that people are being oppressed in Nigeria.

“This is for all that are oppressed, hungry on the streets of Nigeria, those who want to live a humane lifestyle,” she said.

Meanwhile, the OneNigeria group on the other hand held placards to promote to the activities of Buhari and preaching unity in Nigeria.

  • Yoruba nation agitators, others insist on ‘mega protest’ during President Buhari’s address at UN Headquarters tomorrow

Yoruba nation agitators, others insist on ‘mega protest’ during President Buhari’s address at UN Headquarters tomorrow

Self-determination agitators operating on the platform of Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination (NINAS) have vowed to go ahead with the grand finale of its one-million-man freedom march at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the United States on Friday.

The grand finale of the march coincides with the ongoing UN Assembly where President, Muhammadu Buhari, is expected to address the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly on Friday.

Akintoye in a statement, on Thursday, made available to newsmen accused the Federal Government of sponsoring a counter-protest at the United Nations Headquarters tomorrow.

He alleged that the Nigerian Government has started hiring black foreigners living in the United States of America with $500 per head to stage a Pro-Buhari and One Nigeria March opposite the United Nations Headquarters.

Akintoye vowed that the will of the people would prevail no matter how the Federal Government tries to scuttle the NINAS Grand Finale March.

Apart from Akintoye, the Secretary-General, Tony Nnadi, who represents the Lower Niger Congress and Prof. Yusuf Turaki, who represent the Middle-Belt Movement at NINAS have also jointly called on the UN to take urgent step to prevent Nigeria from descending into chaos.

NINAS, which described the 1999 Constitution as a fraud against the people of South and Middle-Belt, having been “enacted without the consent of the people,” demanded the conduct of a regional referendum so that the indigenous people can decide on their nationhood, among others.

All the indigenous people of the South and Middle-Belt in the United States and Canada have been urged to troop out in large number tomorrow.

Yoruba Nation’s alliance with terrorist group, IPOB to attack Buhari is worrying – Presidency

As President Muhammadu Buhari joins his counterparts at the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), holding September 18 to 30 in New York, the Presidency has appealed to the media to focus on important issues other than designated terrorist organisation, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the Presidency advised the media that it is not unexpected that Nigerian diaspora groups use the world’s largest platform – the United Nations General Assembly – to garner attention to their causes but urged that the focus on more important issues.

The statement read: “For Nigerian diaspora groups to use the world’s largest platform – the United Nations General Assembly – to garner attention to their causes is not unexpected.

“It was, however shocking, to see “Yoruba Nation” advocates yesterday (Tuesday) unequivocally throw their lot in with Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“IPOB is a designated terrorist organisation. It has now publicly revealed a 50,000 strong paramilitary organisation.

“It regularly murders security services and innocent civilians, with a significant uptick of violent attacks this year. And it is currently attempting to hold Nigerian states hostage with orders to stay at home under threat of terror.

“Without doubt, Nigerians and the entire world will judge Yoruba Nation by the company it keeps.

“No one can take seriously this organisation if it continues its IPOB association. When their allies systematically trample human rights, it raises sober questions about their claims to uphold the values of the UN.

“The cooperation is a worrying development, once parsed with Yoruba Nation’s increasingly violent rallies in Nigeria.

“Actions and associations speak louder than words. Yoruba Nation’s talk of human rights promotion must therefore be ignored.”

He assured that the Nigerian government would continue its work at the UN- to fight against corruption and illicit financial flows, and international cooperation.

“If we want to see stolen funds returned to their rightful home in Nigeria, the government must continue to campaign for and coordinate global action on asset recovery, Shehu said.

Why UN must bar Yoruba Nation agitators – YAF

The Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF) has urged the UN not to allow the Yoruba Nation agitators to present their petition at its 76th General Assembly.

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Chief Adesina Animashaun, on Tuesday in Lagos, YAF said allowing them would escalate insecurity and tension in Nigeria.

The 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 76) will open on Sept. 14.

The YAF addressed the petition to the UN, the European Union (EU) African Union (AU) and other countries across the world.

It said allowing such petition against the Nigerian Government would send the wrong signal to its citizens and worsen the nation’s insecurity challenges and secession agitations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Ilano Omo Oodua, umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, had petitioned the UN in July over its demand for a separate and independent Yoruba Nation.

Ilano Omo Oodua led by Prof. Banji Akintoye in July also endorsed a petition by the Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination (NINAS) urging the Nigerian Government to conduct a referendum.

YAF, however, said that resort of the group to present a petition against the Federal Government was only part of its strategy to legitimise plans for the dissolution of the Nigerian Federation.

“YAF will never support any plan that will destabilise the nation and will continue to preach peace and unity of Nigeria.

“These self-styled unrepentant critics of the Federal Government of Nigeria through their frequent acerbic and destructive outbursts and attacks against the government, coupled with the violence they unleash on innocent Nigerians must be stopped.

“We are aware these agitators and individuals are behind the recent violence in different parts of the South-West of Nigeria, they have a more sinister objective of destabilising the Nigerian nation for the selfish political end of those bankrolling them.

“It is very clear that the masterminds of these violence are bent on throwing Nigeria into total chaos to hasten the collapse of governments at both the state and Federal levels to enable them execute their evil plans for Nigeria ahead of the 2023 general elections.”

The forum, therefore, urged the various countries also petitioned “to prevail on the UN Security Council to take careful, appropriate and urgent steps to deal decisively with these elements bent on fomenting trouble in the South-West of Nigeria and the country at large”.

YAF also urged the UN to disregard and discountenance the disguised antics and plans of the unpatriotic self-styled freedom fighters and their cohorts.

Why we stormed venue of Yoruba Nation protest in Lagos – Police

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu said the presence of security operatives at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, Lagos, is to ensure the protest is not hijacked by hoodlums.

Agitators of the Yoruba nation had earlier announced plans to use the venue for their protest.

The Commissioner of Police while addressing journalists at the venue of the planned rally on Saturday said the heavy presence of security operatives is to maintain law and order.

We are here because we don’t want the rally to be hijacked by hoodlums, we not chasing anybody away.

“We are just being security conscious and proactive.

“We learnt that some miscreants have perfected plans to seize the opportunity to cause mayhem in the society,” he said.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the Lagos State Police Command had earlier in a statement on Thursday warned that no rally will be allowed, under whatever guise, in any part of the state.

The Command in the statement warned organizers of the planned Yoruba nation protest to, “stay clear of streets of Lagos for the interest of the State and the general public as anyone caught participating or facilitating the rally will be dealt with within the ambits of the law.”

Lagos State cannot afford to experience any security lapses, breakdown of law and order, and threat to public peace at the moment, considering the negative effects and reoccurring agonies of the October 2020 violent #EndSARS crisis that led to massive destruction of public and private facilities while some Police personnel paid the supreme price.
