Join us in shutting down Nigeria on October 1, IPOB woos Yoruba, Christians, others

Following its earlier declaration that there will be operation “No Nigeria Flag in Biafraland” on October 1, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has urged other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria to join in shutting down the country on the slated date.

In a statement signed Tuesday, by Emma Powerful, the mouthpiece for the group, IPOB pleaded with those agitating for Oduduwa Republic and Middle Belt to put aside differences and join the group in shutting down Nigeria on October 1.

“We, the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), request our brothers and sisters in Oduduwa Republic and Middle Belt who suffer similar fate with us to join hands in sympathy protest.

“All lovers of freedom including Christian communities in the North and other parts of Nigeria, who receive humiliation, intimidation and killings from terrorists, bandits and murderous herdsmen should understand that time has come for all victims of impunity and atrocities to unite together for resistance.

“We need to put our differences behind us and rise as one people to defend our ancestral land and heritage against our common enemy,” the statement partly read.

The Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, had earlier declared 1st October, 2021 as sit-at-home day for all its members in South-East in a bid to celebrate “Ambazonia Independence Anniversary”, which is the same date with Nigeria’s Independence Day.

The separatist group threatened to lockdown the entire South-East region on October 1, while calling on its members to remove all Nigerian flags mounted in “Biafraland”.

DSS releases two more Igboho’s aides

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released two more aides of self-professed Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho.

The DSS had on August 30 released eight out of 12 pro-Yoruba Nation agitators arrested during its July 1 invasion of Igboho’s home in Ibadan, Oyo State.

However, four others – Tajudeen Irinloye, Uthman Adelabu, Amudat Babatunde, and Jamiu Oyetunji – were kept in detention by the secret police.

The detainees’ lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, who confirmed the development to journalists on Friday, was, however, silent on the identities of those released by the DSS.

The 12 Yoruba Nation agitators were arraigned by the DSS at the Federal High Court, Abuja, for allegedly colluding with Igboho to stockpile arms and other dangerous weapons in a bid to wreak havoc on some communities in the South-West.

Justice Obiorah Egwuatu granted the defendants bail on August 4.

One killed, others injured as Okada riders protest hike in ticket fees in Ogun

One person has been confirmed dead and others injured following a clash between motorcycle (Okada) riders at Ibeshe, Yewa North local government area of Ogun State.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the DSP, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, however, was not certain about the casualty figure.

It was gathered that the clash started on Monday when motorcycle riders operating around Ibese were at loggerheads with the union leaders over a hike in ticket fees from N600 to N800.

“The issue is currently under control,” Oyeyemi said, noting that “it was a minor struggle that snowballed into a crisis”.

“They said the unions increased their ticket fee from N600 to N800 and that was how the crisis started. But how it then turned into the Hausa and Yoruba crisis is what I don’t know. But, we are on top of the matter. The situation has been brought under control. Our men are still there as we speak”.

Sources say so far, over 12 motorcycles have been burnt even as the locals barricaded the area to stop movement.

A community leader who pleaded anonymity said while some soldiers were mobilised to restore sanity on Monday, the clash between warring parties, however, resumed today.

In the process of trying to restore peace, soldiers allegedly shot at aggrieved indigenes, killing one, while another has been hospitalised.

Buhari-led govt sued for $1bn over death of teenage girl during Yoruba Nation rally

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services have been dragged before an Economic Community of West African States’ court over the death of a 14-year-old girl, who was shot dead during the Yoruba Nation Rally in Lagos State.

A civil society, Love Foundation, filed the suit in the ECOWAS court, seeking the court to award $1billion damages against the government entities to be paid to the deceased’s parents.

The suit is challenging the legality of banning all peaceful protests by the federal government of Nigeria through the police, the DSS, and other security agencies in Nigeria.

A human rights lawyer, Chief Patrick Eholor, filed the suit for the group, seeking an order of the court directing the Lagos State of Nigeria and the mentioned security agencies to pay the money to the family for the inconveniences and damages.

The suit reads, “That due to the threats by policemen of Lagos State, a young girl was killed by the policemen by live bullets in their quest to clamp down on protesters during the Yoruba Nation rally on July 3 in the Ojota area of the state.

“An order directing the defendant and its agents and the Lagos State of Nigeria to provide effective remedies and reparation of $1billion to the family of the deceased including adequate compensation, restitution, satisfaction or guarantees of non-repetition that the Honourable Court may deem fit to grant to human rights defenders, activists, bloggers, journalists and other online and off-line media practitioners that have been harassed, intimidated, unlawfully arrested, detained, and unfairly prosecuted by the defendant because of lawful protest through the criminalization of same by the Nigerian government.”

The suit also asked the court to order the government to stop the intimidation, suppression, harassment, killing, and shooting of peaceful protesters arrested and locked up in different security agencies cells all over Nigeria by the various Nigeria state security agencies.

The group added that the action of the Nigerian government was in variance to Section 24, which guarantees the rights to freedom of expression and information in Articles 8 and 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Recall that armed police officers, led by Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had shot and killed Jumoke while trying to disperse the Yoruba Nation agitators at Ojota.

  • Video shows mother of girl killed during Yoruba Nation rally weep bitterly

Video shows mother of girl killed during Yoruba Nation rally weep bitterly

A video has surfaced on social media showing the mother of the 14-year-old girl, who was allegedly killed by a stray bullet during the Yoruba Nation protest in Lagos State on Saturday, weeping bitterly.

Agitators for Yoruba self-determination had gathered at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota amid the presence of armed policemen and soldiers.

This was after the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeen Odumosu, had addressed newsmen at the venue, where he announced that no rally is allowed in the state.

However, his announcement was defied by the agitators who flaunted their banners and chanted all sorts of slogans to express their determination towards the breakaway of the Yoruba group from Nigeria.

This displeased the security operatives at the venue who fired teargas canisters and used water cannons to disperse the crowd.

This didn’t deter the agitators who returned to their converging point and carried on from where they left off.

The next action from the security operatives had everyone at the rally scampering to safety as gunshots sounded from different directions.

When the situation became a bit calm, a young girl who was displaying drinks at a shop close by was seen lying in a pool of blood.

She was reported to have been hit by a stray bullet when security operatives were dispersing the crowd at the rally.

Reacting, the Lagos State Police Command issued a statement through the Public Relations Officer, Olamuyiwa Adejobi, denying that the girl died as a result of the actions of security operatives.

Adejobi said, “The said corpse was found wrapped and abandoned at a distance, far from Ojota venue of the rally, behind MRS Filling Station, inward Maryland, on the other side of the venue, with dried blood stains suggesting that the corpse is not fresh.

“After a close look at the corpse, a wound suspectedly sustained from a sharp object was seen on it.

“The news is false and mischievous. The Command, therefore, urges the general public to disregard the news and go about their lawful normal daily activities while investigation to unravel the incident will commence immediately.”

However, the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Oodua, through a statement by its Media Communications Secretary, Mr. Maxwell Adeleye, faulted the police for the young girl’s death.

“We want to inform the whole world that a stray bullet fired by officers of the Nigerian Police killed a yet-to-be-identified soft drinks seller at Ojota, venue of the Yoruba Nation rally held July 3rd, 2021,” he said.

Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media has shown a woman alleged to be the girl’s mother weeping and inconsolable.

Speaking in Yoruba, the wailing mother said, “What happened?” as some people held her to prevent her from collapsing.

“My life is ruined. I’m already mourning a child at a young age. Who did this to me, oh God?” She wailed on.

Heders crisis: Igbo, Yoruba groups begin joint security training — IPOB

Separatist groups in the Southern part of the country have agreed to a joint security training for persons to be recruited to protect the region from continued attack by armed herdsmen and others.

The spokesman of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Emma Powerful, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

Powerful said the decision followed the continuous killing of Southerners by armed herdsmen and other hoodlums.

He said: “This is to put the Nigeria Government and her security agencies in Nigeria on notice that Biafra and Oduduwa have further strengthened their bond as one people, following the joint training of personnel from both sides.

“These joint volunteer force will secure the territories of Southern Nigeria against foreign Fulanis terrorists and any unwarranted aggression from any external force.

“Oduduwa and Biafra Volunteer Force demand immediate end to the ongoing genocide against the people of Biafra and immediate demilitarisation of Biafraland as we are now ready to defend our territories against aggression. The killing and abduction in Biafra and Oduduwa land must stop immediately.

“We reiterate that an attack on Oduduwa land is an attack on Biafra and an attack on Biafra is an attack on Oduduwa. This is the bond the Fulanis tried for many years to destroy but today, the new generation of Oduduwa and Biafra have risen to say no to divide and rule.

“We are on the threshold of history because we are stronger together. Today we have trained together, dined together and drank together. Should duty call for it, we shall die together in defense of the entire South. We shall defend our land together, this is historic day for both nations.”

June 12 protest: Stay away from South West – Yoruba forum warns

The Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF) has warned those planning a nationwide protest on June 12 Democracy Day to stay away from the South West.

The group said people of the South West would neither support, tolerate nor join such protests, as the June 12 Democracy Day should be for celebration and not protests.

The warning came against the backdrop of alleged plans by various groups in the country to protest challenges in the nation on the June 12 Democracy Day.

The National Coordinator of the group, Chief Adesina Animashan, in a statement in Lagos on Friday, said the South West would never allow dissidents to mar the peace and peaceful coexistence in the region.

Animashaun alleged that those influencing the move for protests were enemies of state, who had been behind the many insecurity challenges bedevilling the nation.

“The people of South West and other civil society groups in Nigeria were at the forefront of agitations for the Federal Government to name June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, which was given by the current administration, led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Nigerians should not forget so soon that past administrations ignored the calls to honour the late Chief M.K.O Abiola, acclaimed winner of the June 1993 annulled presidential election that later died while in incarceration.

“Therefore, it will be an abomination for the South West which holds the day sacrosanct to see disgruntled persons and hoodlums mar the day rather than celebrating it,” he said.

The YAF national coordinator urged Yoruba youths to shun such calls or protests and should rise up to the challenge by reporting any groups or groups in their domain planning to disrupt the peace in the South West via protests to security agencies closest to them.

He also urged traditional rulers in the South West to speak to their people in their domains against being part of such protests.

“We have enough challenges in Nigeria as it is. Any further action to take to the streets either on presumed peaceful protest will be counter-productive.

“Those bankrolling such moves should get their children and immediate family to embark on such protests as the South West cannot afford to lose their youths on a mundane and irresponsible protest that may likely lead to breakdown of law and order, killings and destruction of property, ” Animashaun said.

June 12 is a significant landmark in the political history of Nigeria and the declaration of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day by
President Buhari in 2020 further buttressed the importance of the day.

On June 12, 1993, the country witnessed an election that many claimed was the fairest in the nation’s history, however, the results of the election remain unknown as the election was annulled by the then military head of state, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

Oduduwa Republic: Yoruba people are ready to die in pursuit of our nation – Gani Adams

Gani Adams, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, has said people of the Yoruba extraction are ready to die in the push to actualise Oduduwa Republic.

Adams said some people of the Southwest are determined to pursue Oduduwa Republic.

Speaking in Lagos yesterday, the former Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, leader said the Southwest reserves the legitimate right to struggle for Oodua Republic.

Adams also lamented that the struggle has been hijacked by top politicians in the region.

He said: “It is unfortunate that some people are determined to weaken the spirit of the agitators. Unfolding events in the last few weeks have shown that some prominent politicians have hijacked the struggle for the actualisation of the O’odua Republic.

“It is an attempt to distract us from the true and original intention of the struggle.

“But I want to say it here that the struggle to seek a new nation is the legitimate rights that we are determined to live and die for and we wouldn’t waiver in our beliefs and determination to liberate our race.”
