Jonathan urges Niger Delta youths to shun violence

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday urged Niger Delta youths to shun violence and embrace peace for the development of the region and the country at large.

Jonathan gave the advice when the executive of Movement for Survival of Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND), paid him a visit in Yenagoa.

The former president cautioned them against restiveness in the region which he said supports the economy of the nation through production of oil and gas.

Jonathan noted that youths remained the focus of most government development policies, saying that any attempt to cause violence would work against their interests.

“The future belongs to the youths who are at the centre of most developmental endeavours and policies of government; so, the diversion of youthful energy towards violence is not desirable at all.

“The future of this country belongs to the young ones not for those of us who have given our youthful years and are at the verge of exiting the scene. The youths should resist every attempt to take to violence.

“Peace in the Niger Delta is very essential as any disturbance in the Niger Delta affects the country because the region supports the economy of the nation,’’ Jonathan said.

Earlier, MOSIEND President, Mr Kenedy Tonjo-West said the purpose of the visit was to seek the advice of the statesman on the plethora of challenges confronting the Ijaw nation, Niger Delta and Nigeria.

Tonjo-West called for the implementation of the recommendations of the “2014 National Conference.’’

He appealed to Jonathan to mobilise former Heads of State to persuade the Federal Government to reverse the hike in electricity tariff and pump price of petrol

On security, he said, “MOSIEND is uncomfortable with the level of insecurity along our waterways and communities.

“Your Excellency, we most respectfully appeal that you wade into the Oluasiri/Soku boundary issue with a view to finding lasting solution to the intermittent squabbles between Rivers and Bayelsa.

“Prevail on the two state governors in the region that are supposed to close ranks to address this dispute and its associated problems limiting our progress in the Niger Delta region,’’ Tonjo-West said.

Insecurity in Nigeria is a result of bad governance – CAN

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Dr. Olasupo Ayokunle, has called on the government to address insecurity by providing infrastructure, saying the security challenges facing the country were caused by bad governance.

Ayokunle spoke at the investiture ceremony of Dr. Micheal Abodunrin as the new Chancellor for Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State on Saturday.

Ayokunle, who is the Visitor to the institution, while commenting on the security situation as the country marks the 60th independence anniversary, lamented the lack of implementation of development plans by the government, saying with money, terrorists find it easy recruiting many jobless youths and use them to disrupt the peace.

He said, “You cannot just look at the security situation in isolation. Insecurity in the country is a by-product of bad governance.

“When development plans are not executed, you see graduates leaving school without any employment and an idle hand is what the devil can use.

“Anybody that can give them (graduates) pittance, they are ready to take it and work for them. So, terrorists find it very easy to recruit them because they induce them with money and all other things.

  • Edo 2020 and youths as canon folder, By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo 2020 and youths as canon folder, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
Barely one month to the September 19, 2020 governorship election, Edo State is on edge, prompting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contemplate postponement of the poll or refuse to declare results in the face of obvious violence.
The major campaigns of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) have upped their charges of planned or actual disruption/attacks of each other’s activities.
The ruling PDP in Edo, fielding Governor Godwin Obaseki for re-election, seems ahead of levelling allegations against the trio of the APC, its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and the party’s former National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
For instance, on Tuesday, August 11, the PDP, via its spokesman in Edo, Chris Nehikhare, alleged of plots by the opposition APC “to cause mayhem” in Uzairue, Etsako West local government area.
Nehikhare said: “We have received information that leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC have decided to confront and attack members and supporters of the PDP in Etsako West, where former APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole hails from.”
But the APC spokesperson in Edo, Chris Azebamwan, dismissed the allegations, saying the APC didn’t breach a pact entered into for the campaigns to stage their rallies at different locations.
“It is obvious that the PDP knows what will befall it on September 19th, and that is why they are bringing this kind of issue,” Azebanwan said.
But by Thursday, August 13, the PDP campaign posted to Facebook an alleged thugs’ attack on the convoy of Governor Obaseki, on its way to a rally at Ward 10, Apana, Etsako West.
Quoting an eyewitness, the report said women in the ward resisted the armed thugs, who were later repelled by the “superior firepower” of security operatives after a five-minute exchange.
Obaseki’s spokesman, Crusoe Osagie, was to reinforce the said incident at Ward 10, Apana: That Oshiomhole sponsored the thugs, whose “gunshots were repelled by a combined team of security personnel and vigilante groups.”
Yet, the PDP, with its rapid response squad that files live events on the go, delayed posting of the “attack” that had no reported injuries or deaths, on both sides, and no Police report of arrests or attempts to arrest the “perpetrators” of the ambush.
In the absence of a Police report, the PDP linked the assault to Comrade Oshiomhole, who hails from the Apana community in Uzairue, also the council area of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
But Oshiomhole’s aide, Victor Oshioke, debunking the allegations, said Comrade Shaibu sponsored the “gunmen” who were reportedly in the convoy of Governor Obaseki.
Oshioke said: “The attackers were actually in the governor’s convoy. They drove ahead of the convoy from Ayoguiri and when they got to the village, they started by destroying the billboards…
“Then they started shooting around, and people ran into the bushes… We ensured that our people did not retaliate so that it will not be reported that Obaseki was attacked in Oshiomhole’s ward, which we know was their intention.”
The veracity of these counter-claims of attack isn’t at issue here, but the bloody road politicians are ready to take, to acquire power, for the sole aim of having unfettered access to the treasury.
Some would argue that political thugs are lone wolves, carrying out nefarious acts without prompting. But aren’t politicians behind the scenes, directing, by proxy, the disruption of campaigns?
Sadly, Nigerian youths, who constitute the bulk of the thuggeries, and pose the greater danger to the society, may not benefit directly from the politicians they stake their lives for.
Because they swim in ignorance and gullibility, the youths can’t ask the politicians these simple questions: “Where’re your children? Can they lead this dare-devil procession, please?”
Of course, politicians’ children are far away from the theatre of war. They aren’t domiciled in the ward, council, district, state or any part of the country. They reside overseas, enjoying the largesse meant to better the lives of the poor armed youths.
The social media is awash with hate speeches by youthful party supporters and followers, who regard their relatives, friends and associates as enemies, for holding contrary political views.
This is the danger Edo State faces, such that there’s no longer respect for revered personages and sacred places that “ordinary mortals” used to dread disrespecting and treading.
The other day, armed thugs (youths) clashed with protesters at the hallowed grounds of the Palace of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Ukuakpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, in Benin City, resulting in several persons sustaining injuries, some severe.
Days later, on the strength of alleged plot by a faction of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) to sack and replace the presiding officers, armed youths invaded the complex.
With government officials and security operatives on standby, some of the youths, with mason implements, removed the assembly’s roof and the mounted iconic Mace, even as tippers heaped sand at the entrance of the complex. Imagine the abuse of the Legislature!
Were these events happenstance? No! While Comrade Oshiomhole backs the 17 members of the House (14 of them not sworn-in at the controversial inauguration in 2016), the remaining seven of the 24-member chamber have the support of Governor Obaseki.
The Edo Assembly is named after one of Nigeria’s finest nationalists and pro-democracy activists, Chief Anthony Enahoro, who, at barely 21, moved the motion for “self rule” (independence) for Nigeria in 1953. That politicians have turned this edifice into an arena of the absurd would make Chief Enahoro to summersault in his grave!
External forces, especially the heads of National Campaign Councils of the PDP and APC for the September 19 poll, have also fuelled the heating up of the polity in Edo by acting as disrupters rather than galvanisers of supports for their candidates.
But in the name of all that’s decent in ‘The Heartbeat Of The Nation’, politicians should consider the passionate entreaties of Nigerians, including Edo traditional rulers, to play by the rules.
On the imperative of a congenial environment for the election, Oba Ewuare II told visiting delegations of the PDP and APC that the palace was apolitical, and sued for peace ahead of poll.
The Omo N’Oba said the palace was “particularly concerned about the person who would have respect for the throne, traditional institutions and create employment for the people of Edo State…”
Similarly, the Otaru of Igarra, HRH Oba Adeche Saiki II, on behalf of traditional rulers of Akoko-Edo area that hosted the APC campaign and its candidate, Pastor Ize-Iyamu, urged the political class to maintain peace for security and development.
“As you go from here, you should drum it on our youths and party faithful to shun violence and thuggery. We should all ensure peace, which is the mother of security and development,” Oba Saiki said.
This ding-dong by politicians will continue till September. But the prayer of Edo people is for the political gladiators to avoid using the youths to set the state on fire over the 2020 election.

Irate Imo youths set houses ablaze over woman’s death

Angry youths from the Amakohia community in the Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State have set ablaze five houses belonging to suspected cultists, who allegedly murdered a pub operator identified as Mrs Uchechi Ogoke.

Uchechi, whose husband is based in Malaysia, died on June 30, 2020, as a result of machete cuts perpetrated on her by the hoodlums, who invaded her residence at night.

Sources in the area, however, alleged that Uchechi’s husband and his younger brother had a hand in her gruesome murder.

According to the sources, the deceased’s husband was uncomfortable with allegations that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs.

The husband and his younger brother, it was alleged, conspired with the hoodlums to kill Uchechi.

The attackers also inflicted machete cuts on Uchechi’s eight-year-old daughter and house help.

Though the two girls survived the attack, the machete cuts on the woman’s body left her with no chance of survival.

A source in the community, who spoke said Uchechi, who was in her late 30s, cried for help but nobody in the neighbourhood heard her as she was butchered to death.

The source stated, “Her eight-year-old daughter, who begged the assailants to spare her mother’s life, was also dealt machete blows. But she survived the attack after being rushed to hospital the following morning.

“The woman was operating a pub, where she also sold fresh fish pepper soup. The police have arrested some persons, including the younger brother of her husband.”

On the buildings that were destroyed, the source said, “The burnt houses belong to those suspected to be behind the killing of the woman.”

Another source stated that the irate youths, who sang war songs, razed five buildings on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, to avenge Uchechi’s killing.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the murder of the woman and said, “The matter is still being investigated.”

Ikeokwu said he could not immediately speak on the burning of houses by furious youths in Amakohia and the alleged arrest of the deceased’s brother-in-law.

Youths protest leader’s demise, dump corpse at monarch’s palace

Myriad of youths in Ogidi community, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra state have protested death of a youth leader in the area, Chike Okoye.

The deceased reportedly died attempting to dodge arrest of police officers who stormed his Umueze Alor village over alleged land tussle between the community and the Traditional Ruler, Igwe Alex Oyido.

The youths had obstructed the ever-busy Onitsha-Enugu old road and made bon-fires with used tyres to express their grievances.

The protesters who were said to have marched to the deceased house to demand for the corpse, later headed to the mortuary after they were told the corpse had already been deposited at the morgue.

The youths later took the corpse and deposited it at the palace of the monarch.

Speaking to newsmen on the incident Saturday, Chairman of the village and leader of the protesters, Mr Obide Benedith linked the death to the community’s land which he alleged the monarch encroached into without their consent.

Benedith, who spoke in company of his vice, Nonso Agbata, said, “Asking why such should be done, he started arresting those who are out to oppose him, including myself, the deceased, my vice and others.

“We have dumped the corpse in his palace and demanded that he should release those he arrested, stop encroaching on our land and arresting us before the corpse will be removed.

“It was the police that the monarch sent that held him as he was about to evade arrest in his house and was pushed down from the storey building and he died.”

Reacting, the monarch, who spoke through Ugochukwu Okwosa Owelle called for calm, pledging amicable resolution to the matter.

“What you people are doing now is worsening the situation, I plead that we discuss as brothers for the good of us all,” he said.

President of the community, Chuka Onubogu, who later arrived the palace and took the corpse back to the morgue, described the incident as unfortunate and unintentional, urging the bereaved to take heart.

He however promised soon release of those still under detension, saying, “I have talked with the CP and he assured me that they will be released immediately.”

When contacted, Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed said the deceased died after jumping from a fence in an attempt to evade arrest.

He however said normalcy had returned to the area as a team of police officers were deployed immediately to quel the situation.

The rhythm of Marley’s career changed when he rode to fame last year on the wave of his protracted legal battle with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

We sag our trousers to keep in vogue – Youths

Some youths in Jos on Friday said they indulged in sagging their trousers in order ” to keep in vogue” and express their youthfulness.

One of them, Mr Daniel Olatunde, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he thoroughly enjoyed sagging because it gave him “an aura of confidence”.

‘’ When I sag my trousers, I look my age, but without sagging I feel like an old man, ‘’ Olatunde, a student, said.

Otun Philips, another student, said that sagging his trousers made him feel like a Star as many celebrities sagged their trousers.

‘’If you follow our entertainment world, you will always see stars in the industry sagging their trousers while performing, so it is in vogue to sag,” Philips said.

Danladi Musa also said sagging was just a show of youthfulness, but that any youth who indulged in the practice would out-grow it with time.

NAN checks found some youths at the Terminus Market buying and adjusting their trousers to enable them to sag, as most of the trousers in the market are not suitable for sagging.

Mr mike Ike, a tailor said that many youths approached him with different types of trousers for adjustment to suit the sagging vogue.

“Some of them would ask me to put zip on the trousers to enable them to wear them with ease as in most cases, they make the trousers too tight for their legs to pass through,” Ike said.

Mr udom Adams, another tailor, said he was enjoying good patronage as many youths were bringing their trousers to him for adjustment.

“I charge them between N300 and N500 per trouser adjustment and putting zips on both legs, so, it is a good deal, ”Adams said.

Some parents, however, expressed displeasure at sagging, describing it as a dirty and lazy fashion.

One of them, Mrs Grace Etonie, said that sagging was for lazy boys who would prefer to hold their trouser all day.

“If you look at a youth that is sagging his trouser, he uses one hand to hold it in place to prevent it from falling , and it is difficult to get a job done efficiently with one hand, ”Etonie said.

Another, Mr Alex Bolarinwa, said he had banned sagging among his children and advised youths to do better things with their time.

Bolarinwa also urged them to dress decently and desist from copying improper dressing they watched on television

  • Whether we like it or not, youths will take over – Buhari

Whether we like it or not, youths will take over – Buhari

Nigeria’s President, Muhammad Buhari on Friday said whether the old generation likes it or not, the youths will take over the affairs of the nation some day.

He thus urged the youths to prepare for the challenges of leader.

Buhari spoke when he received All Progressives Congress (APC) youth leaders from the six geo-political zones, advising the younger generation to keep a broader view of the country as one entity, and continuously de-emphasize ethnic and religious backgrounds in nation building.

“Whether we like it or not, we will someday handover to Nigerian youths. And you have to brace up for leadership. Some interest groups will come up with ethnic, religious issues, but you have to look at the broader picture.

“We had a civil war that consumed over 2 million Nigerians, and we learnt our lessons. Nigeria is one country, and no one should take our firmness for granted,’’ he said.

Buhari said he took interest in politics after a clean bill on his integrity by those who detained him after the 1985 military coup and who thoroughly checked his record as governor of the North East, Minister of Petroleum and Head of State and found nothing incriminating.

“After I was released and nothing was found on me I took interest in politics. This is what pushed me into partisan politics; to serve with integrity. So I decided to try leadership as a civilian, after taking off the military uniform,’’ he added.

On his second tenure, the President assured that he would be more firm, focused and relentless in delivering results, especially in securing the country, stimulating the economy to work for all, and fighting corruption.

“I am currently serving my last term in office. I swore by the constitution to defend the country, and I will do the needful for the country,’’ President Buhari said. I

In his remarks, National Youth Leader of the APC, Comrade Sadiq Shuaibu Abubakar, congratulated the President for winning the Presidential elections in 2019, assuring him that the youths will continue to support his policies and vision of greatness for the country.

Abubakar urged the President to get more youths involved in governance so as to learn from his “treasured wisdom.’’
