Interior ministry disowns public holidays announcement

The Ministry of Interior has refuted trending news in the media purportedly credited to the ministry on the announcement of Public holidays for the Yuletide.

The Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Mr Afonja Ajibola, on Saturday in Abuja said the ministry had not issued any statement on public holidays for the yuletide.

Ajibola said that the trending media report was false, as the  Federal Government had yet to formally declare a public holiday.

Recall Bashir Ahmad, Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital Communications had disclosed the Federal Government declared Dec. 26, 27 and Jan. 2, 2023 as public holidays.

“The Federal Government has declared Monday 26th, Tuesday 27th December 2022 and Monday, 2nd January 2023 as public holidays to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day celebrations respectively,” Ahmad wrote on Twitter and Facebook.

The ministry advised members of the public to disregard the trending news and await a formal public announcement on the issue  in the next few days.

Omicron: FG advises Nigerians to avoid unnecesary travels during yuletide to curb spread

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha has asked Nigerians to avoid unnecessary travels in order to spread the spread of the Omicron variant in the country.

He also called on the citizens to continue to adhere to all Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) including the regular wearing of masks, washing of hands as well as maintaining social distancing as the world grapples with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The SGF made the call in a statement issued by spokesperson Willie Bassey on the 2021 Christmas celebration to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.

He equally felicitated with Nigerians, particularly the Christian faithful as they join their counterpart from the rest of the world in celebrating the season.

“The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, felicitates with Nigerians, particularly the Christian faithful, on the joyous occasion of the 2021 Christmas celebration, to commemorate the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ,” the statement read.

“While wishing Nigerians a MERRY Christmas and a prosperous NEW YEAR in advance, he reminds all on the need to continue to adhere to all Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) including the regular wearing of masks, washing of hands, social distancing, and avoidance of unnecessary travels in order to curb the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.”

  • President Buhari’s 2021 Christmas message

    President Buhari’s 2021 Christmas message

    PRESIDENT BUHARI’S 2021 CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

I rejoice with Christians in Nigeria as they join fellow believers all over the world to celebrate this season.

It is a special period that brings peoples of the world together with one purpose; to celebrate togetherness, joy, peace, and above all, to share love with one another through exchange of goodwill and gifts.

For the second Christmas running, the world will not be able to celebrate as we used to in years past.

The COVID-19 pandemic, with its attendant debilitating impact, has remained with mankind, mutating and leaving in its wake devastating consequences on the economy, social interaction, and curtailing certain freedoms.

The silver lining, however, is that humanity has been able to rise up with one voice and purpose, to confront the foisted conditions.

I want to use this opportunity to appeal to our dear citizens to embrace vaccination, which is the best scientifically known bulwark against the pandemic.

Recent events have shown that vaccination greatly reduces the effects of the virus on the human body.

I will also urge those that have taken the two doses to go ahead and take the booster as advised by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC).

I commend the efforts of members of the PSC under the headship of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as they continue to chart a roadmap out of the pandemic and associated issues.

On security, despite the remarkable successes generally recorded, we still have some challenges.

Our courageous security forces, bolstered by the necessary support from this administration, daily confront the wicked ones amongst us, who continue to threaten the peace of the land.

Recently, during the meeting with fellow Heads of State of the ECOWAS, I discussed the need to intensify efforts to jointly confront this menace causing instability in our sub-region.

I am confident that with the renewed commitment and empowerment of our committed security personnel, all these issues which inflict pain and trauma on us will soon be history.

Let us utilize the opportunity that this festive period brings to encourage ourselves so that the machinations of the wicked ones in our midst will find no place to thrive.

Christmas is a season when hope is rekindled. Hope, Peace, Joy, Love are the recurring themes of this time.

It is in the midst of hardship that the true test of a nation emerges.

I urge Nigerians to invoke the indomitable spirit in us and see the present order of things as a phase that will also pass, just like other unsavory situations in the nation’s history.

This government will not abandon the promises made to Nigerians for a better lease of life.

The diversification of the economy embarked upon is yielding fruits.

We shall continue to create opportunities for our teeming youths to ventilate their tremendous energy.

As we felicitate with family, friends, colleagues, associates, let us spare moments to reach out to the less privileged.

Let us also pray and give words of encouragement to our gallant security personnel fulfilling their oaths to keep us safe.

I assure my compatriots that this administration remains resolute at ensuring that the standard of living of the average Nigerian is elevated.

On this note, I wish Nigerians Merry Christmas!

    Muhammadu Buhari

Yuletide: IGP orders round-the-clock visibility patrols

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the thirty-six (36) States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja as well as their supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), to initiate and implement well-coordinated crime prevention strategies and ensure round-the-clock visibility patrols towards peaceful Christmas and New Year celebrations in the country.

The IGP in a statement on Thursday noted that achieving a crime and crisis free Yuletide is of utmost priority to the Force and the nation at large, as it adds to the build-up into a new year.

He assured citizens of adequate security throughout the period of the celebration and beyond, adding that the AIGs and CPs have been directed to massively deploy human, intelligence and other operational assets of the Force at their disposal to all public places including residential areas, places of worship, recreational centres, financial institutions, market places, motor-parks, major highways, airports, railway stations, amongst others, to protect the citizens and critical national infrastructure (CNI).

In addition, the IGP warned police personnel deployed for duties during the Yuletide season, particularly those deployed to secure the highways across the country, to desist from acts inimical to discipline and professionalism.

The police boss equally enjoined citizens to cooperate with officers deployed for the assignments especially by being law abiding, noting that the Force remains sensitive to issues of rights violations, illegitimate use of force and has since deployed the Monitoring Unit, the X-Squad, and the Force Provost Unit on joint operation nationwide with a view to monitoring conducts of officers as citizens transit in and around the country during the festive season and holidays.

While congratulating Christians in the country on the occasion of the 2021 celebration of the birth of Christ, the IGP thanked all Nigerians for supporting the Police and the security community in the fight against crimes and criminality.

He urged citizens to go about the celebration in the spirit of love, sacrifice and to take protective measures to reduce exposure to security risks and the new wave of the COVID-19 variant.

IGP Alkali Baba further emphasized that citizens should keep police emergency phone lines handy or contact the nearest police station in the event of any untoward situation that may pose threats to public peace, safety and security.

The IGP, on behalf of the Force Management Team and entire officers of the Force, wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, and assured citizens that service delivery will be improved in the coming year, 2022.

Yuletide: Police ban use of fireworks in Kogi

The Police Command in Kogi on Saturday ban the use of fireworks during the Christmas and New Year celebrations in the state.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Idrisu Dauda-Dabban slammed the ban on the residents warned against any flaunt, which would attract the wrath of the law.

Dauda-Dabban, in a press release by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PORO), DSP Williams Ovye-Aya, called on all parents to caution their Children and wards, particularly the Youths and Teenagers who are fond of playing banger (Knockout) to desist from such acts.

The CP warned, “the Police is determined to deal decisively with anybody that want to cause disturbance of public peace.

“In fact, anybody caught flaunting this order will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

“This is because the Command will not hesitate to apply the full wrath of the law against persons who would deliberately want to take the law into their hands.

“Accordingly, we advise all law abiding people in the State to go about their legitimate businesses without cause to fear as the police is on top of the situation throughout the festive periods, ” he assured.

Dauda-Dabban urged the public to promptly report any suspicious movement or activities within their neighbourhood to the nearest security agents for prompt action.

  • Security Alert: DSS uncovers bandits, kidnappers’ strategies to attack, abduct lawmakers during Yuletide

Security Alert: DSS uncovers bandits, kidnappers’ strategies to attack, abduct lawmakers during Yuletide

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday raised alarm that certain groups and individuals intend to cause a breakdown of law and order in the country.
The Service said this is more so as it has observed that some persons who are desperately seeking power use wrong and skewed narratives to not only mislead citizens but overheat the polity.
It said already, such persons are exploiting and politicising the issue of insecurity in parts of the country for pecuniary and other selfish reasons.
Addressing reporters at the DSS headquarters, Public Relations Officer of the Service, Dr Peter Afunanya, said many simply want to use the situation to cause divisions among citizens, seek cheap popularity and/or present the country as ungovernable.
The Service also raised alarm that recessing members of National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly and other public and private sector workers on vacation may be predisposed to threats of various degrees.
This, it said, also applies to Nigerians who may travel from within and outside the country to join their loved ones for the celebrations. These individuals, the Service said, are susceptible to kidnapping, hijack, assassinations, armed robbery and political manipulations
The DSS also accused the legal team of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, of misleading the public with fake news about how their client is treated in custody. It said contrary to what is being peddled, Kanu is not being starved or ill treated in any way.
Afunanya said: “The Service, therefore, warns that those who are involved in these should desist from such destabilising acts.
“It also enjoins politicians to play by the rule and avoid statements or activities capable of inflaming the fires of division and violence prior to 2023 elections.
“Opinion moulders like the clergy, religious and traditional rulers are also to guard their utterances and avoid inciting pronouncements.
“In a related development, it is common knowledge that criminal elements will heighten their inglorious activities before, during and after the festive periods.
“Therefore, religious and community leaders, hoteliers and operators of markets, parks, recreational and relaxation centres are to be at alert and watch strange movements and activities around their facilities.
“Such facilities include places of worship, palaces, markets, schools and other public buildings.
“Owners and operators of these public spaces and their patrons should endeavour to isolate and report suspected rogues to security agencies for prompt response.
“Consequently, the Service’s interactive website and complaint lines will remain active and available to the public.
“Its formations at the State and local Government levels will be open 24 hours of the day. This is in line with the Service’s commitment and support to the populace.
“As schools vacate and students return home for holidays, there is likelihood that subversive gangs will target them for recruitment for undesirable intents.
“These may include but not limited to financial crimes, armed robbery, civil disobedience and violent protests, substance abuse, banditry and kidnapping.
“In this respect, parents and guardians are advised to be watchful of their children and wards and ensure that they do not engage in unlawful acts.
“Aside students, recessing members of National Assembly/State Houses of Assembly and other public/private sector workers on vacation may be predisposed to threats of various degrees.
“This also applies to Nigerians who may travel from within and outside the country to join their loved ones for the celebrations.
“These individuals are susceptible to kidnapping, hijack, assassinations, armed robbery and political manipulations.
“They are advised to be security conscious in order not to fall victims of these attacks and destructive political maneuvers.
“Let me reiterate at this juncture that those who sponsor kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, insurgency and all kinds of attacks on security agents, civilians and vulnerable populations should have a rethink.
“These persons, whether in the North or South, know themselves. There is no doubt that they have crossed the lines and it is now time to crush them.
“On IPOB and the alleged ill-treatment of its detained leader, the Service has, without any fear of contradiction, applied restraint in making public statements over the matter.
“The reason is simply because it avoids joining issues especially over a matter that is sub-judice. But for the sake of transparency and democratic accountability, the Service has decided to make some clarifications.
“It (the Service) denies all the inciting allegations by IPOB and states that:
    “Nnamdi Kanu is not, in any way, maltreated in custody. Accusations of maltreatment negate the Service’s Standard Operation Procedure on the implementation of rights of a suspect;
“Nnamdi Kanu enjoys full luxury in the holding facility incomparable to any of its type anywhere in the country. He is accorded full rights and privileges. He is never denied his right of worship or freedom from his select religious practice.
“Adequate attention is paid to Kanu’s health. He has unhindered access to the best medical care and doctors.
“Kanu, himself, has confirmed to his visitors that the Service has never, in any way, maltreated him. He even confirmed this to the quartet of Senators Ike Ekweremadu and Enyinnaya Abaribe; Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church, Nigeria and Co-Chair, Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace and Ambassador Okechukwu Emuchay, MFR, Secretary-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who saw him on Wednesday, 8th December, 2021.
“The story of Kanu being starved is fallacious. He could not have been starved as he enjoys meals of his choice. That he is not allowed change of clothing is also false.
“He is regularly allowed change of clothing as against what is presented to the public by IPOB propagandists. Assuming he is being maltreated, how come his visitors told him he was looking well?
“All the allegations of violation of his rights as a suspect, victimization and starvation among others are not true.
“It is unfortunate that some elements have decided to use outright misinformation to represent the state of affairs.
“Those who make these false stories do so to attract undue attention for the singular purpose of achieving a desired end.
“Rather than focus on how he should get justice, Kanu’s legal team and some mischievous elements among them have chosen to use fake news to mislead the public.
“While the Court in its wisdom ordered that Kanu be remanded in the safer DSS Custody, some of his legal representatives, for reasons best known to them, preferred Kuje Prison and have failed to explain the rationale for such choice.
“It may interest the public to note that a particular lawyer among Kanu’s Team is feasting on the matter such that one can conclude that his interest is beyond getting justice for his client. Be that as it may, the Court has the final say on the matter.
“Instructively, the media is reminded of its duty in national security. As influencers, media practitioners are called upon to use their platforms to pursue peaceful coexistence.
“They must commit themselves to the unity of the country and shun misinformation, fake news, hate speech and such other misleading narratives.
“Journalists, while discharging their constitutional roles, are enjoined to be objective, conflict-sensitive and patriotic in their reportage.
“Overall, citizens and residents are advised to cooperate with security and law enforcement agencies for lasting peace in the country.
“They should be wary of efforts designed from within and outside the shores of the country to misdirect or use them to undermine public order. Therefore, they should exercise caution in the way and manner they may conduct their affairs during the festivities and beyond.
“On its part, the Service will continue to collaborate with other sister agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure that all law abiding citizens and residents pursue their legitimate businesses without hindrances.
“While it has become expedient to issue these warnings and advisories, the Service maintains that it will not hesitate to deal, in accordance with the law, with those who may wish to test its resolve in ensuring internal security and national stability before, during and after the yuletide.
“For those that wish to, they must note that nemesis and the long hands of the law will definitely catch up with them.
“For emphasis, no one, no matter how highly placed, will be allowed to take laws into his or her hands.
“Finally, the DG, Management and Staff of the DSS appreciate everyone who has supported the Service in its effort to ensure peace and security in the country.
“Let us remember that security is the responsibility of everyone. Let us support security agencies to achieve the desired peace for our country.
“We wish every one of you and indeed all Nigerians a hitch free yuletide season. As we look forward to a new year, we wish you a prosperous 2022.”
