Patronise made-in Nigeria goods, Lawyer tells Nigerians

An Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr Yusuf Abdullahi, has advised Nigerians to always patronise goods made in the country.

Abdullahi, who gave the advice in Ilorin on Saturday in an interview said most people were fond of glorifying foreign-made goods to the detriment of home made ones.
According to him, most Nigerians prefer to pay high prices for substandard goods and products from abroad than to pay lesser for high quality made-in-Nigeria goods.

“We see anything Nigeria-made as ‘fake’. We prefer to buy substandard abroad goods than to buy quality home made goods.
“Nigerians must wake up and appreciate their own goods rather than investing in other people’s economy.
“You see some people paying huge amount of money for some foreign wears that does not worth it . When you ask them to pay for Nigeria wears, they will tell you God forbid.

“We need to change our mentality and value what we have. It is not everything in Nigeria that is fake,” he said.

The legal practitioner, however, called on government at all levels to ensure strict monitoring of goods produced in the country.

He advised government to task SON, NAFDAC and other relevant agencies not to compromise on their duties.

“Government must ensure strict supervisions are made via their machineries to ensure quality goods are in circulation,” he said.

FRSC denies introducing Sharia Law to enforce traffic rules

The Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) has dissociated itself from the rumours that it is seeking the introduction of Sharia Law to complement existing extant regulations on the enforcement of traffic rules and prosecution of offenders.

Recently, there were media reports that the sector commander, FRSC, in Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, spoke on the need to create a Shari’a law to prosecute traffic offenders to curtail road crashes in the country.

But reacting to Abdullahi’s comment in a press statement, issued by FRSC headquarters on Saturday, said the entire statement does not in anyway, reflect the position of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

According to the statement signed by Bisi Kazeem, assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer, noted that the Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu has recalled with immediate effect, the Sector Commander to the National Headquarters Abuja, for necessary administrative action because the Sector Commander through the quoted statements has breached the FRSC regulations and the Standard Operating Procedures.

The statement reads: “Without any reservation, it is key to inform the general public that the Federal Road Safety Corps is a Government Agency with statutory responsibilities for road safety administration in Nigeria and sensitive to the country’s multi-religious as well as heterogeneous ethnic composition.

“The Corps was founded through Decree No. 45, as amended by Decree 35 of 1992 referred to in the statute books as the FRSC Act cap 141 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN). The Act was passed by the National Assembly as Federal Road Safety Corps (establishment) Act 2007.

“By this very fact, it is important to clearly posit that the Corps is neither a religious nor sectional organisation, but a Federal Government Agency established with a mandate that is guided by the provisions of an establishment Act; and not a Sharia, Mosaic, customary, canon or any other law whatsoever that contradicts the provisions of it’s establishment Act, or the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

Kazeem stressed that the lead agency role is shielded in it strict compliance with established regulations duly passed by the National Assembly. As such, the public is humbly called to disregard the entire content of the opinion as published because it is outrightly baseless.
