Why we celebrated former DG Bichi’s exit – DSS officers

The recent resignation of the former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS)  Yusuf Bichi stirred jubilation within the agency.

It would recalled that a video emerged online showing some DSS staff members allegedly celebrating in the wake of Bichi’s resignation.

Speaking on the controversy the viral video stirred, many DSS officers, who requested anonymity, expressed relief, describing Bichi’s exit as a “freedom from unprofessionalism.”

These DSS officers alleged several misconduct during Bichi’s tenure, particularly pointing to undue interference in the service’s operations by his family members, specifically his wife and son, Yusuf Bichi Jr.

According to the unnamed officers,  the former DG family interference compromised the professional integrity of the agency.

A DSS officer, however, said personnel of the agency were happy with Bichi’s removal.

He said, “We believed his regime was a punishment for us. He impeded the career advancement of many officers by extending the service years of those due to retire. Some senior officers, who were due for retirement in 2021 and 2022 were retained in the service.”

Another officer alleged that Bichi was indifferent to the welfare of workers.

The officer said, “The Federal Government increased our salary by 40 per cent, but there was no implementation. We were earning more than the police before, but the police are now earning more than us because they implemented their 40 per cent increment. However, there was a proposal to increase our salary by 25 per cent this year, but it has yet to be realised.”

Speaking on the recruitment of personnel, another secret agent described Bichi’s recruitment as nepotistic.

He further stated, “Bichi’s recruitments were arbitrary and lopsided. Three different training sessions have been conducted for some people we didn’t know when they were recruited this year alone. Most of the newly recruited personnel are northerners.

“His first recruitment in 2019 brought in either 420 or 450 persons from Bichi Local Government Area in Kano alone. In the history of the service, 450 was the maximum recruitment we ever had before Bichi, but he recruited 1,000 personnel at once.

“There was no southerner among the national directors and deputy directors at the headquarters until January this year when he was directed by the Presidency following a petition. His wife is another issue; she abused her husband’s office. His son, too, was power drunk.

“Just two weeks ago, his wife slapped a DSS director in a northern state. She also slapped at least two deputy directors at airports.”

BREAKING: DSS raises alarm of plots to smear DG, Yusuf Bichi

The Department of State Services (DSS) has raised an alarm of plots by some unnamed politicians to smear Yusuf Bichi, its Director-General.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the DSS also raised the alarm that some of its key officials are not left out in the smear campaign plots by the unnamed politicians.

This is following reports that Aisha Bichi, wife of the DSS DG reportedly ordered the arrest of Abba Yusuf, the Kano State Governorship candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

It was reported that Bichi and Yusuf had a confrontation at the gate of the VIP lounge of Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday night.

It was also reported that the convoy of Abba Yusuf caused traffic congestion preventing Bichi’s convoy from gaining access to the VIP lounge.

In a move to clear the ensuing traffic gridlock, there was an altercation between DSS operatives and the aides of the governorship candidate, which led to an exchange of angry words between Yusuf and Bichi.

The publication reported that shortly after Bichi threatened to ensure that Yusuf did not board his flight, Yusuf was barred from boarding an Air Peace flight heading for Abuja before he was arrested.

According to a source; “The DSS DG’s wife actually ordered the arrest of the Kano governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Abba Yusuf, and barred him from boarding an Air Peace flight from Kano to Abuja on the fateful Sunday night.

“The trouble started at the gate of the VIP lounge of the  Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano when the motorcade of the politician caused traffic which delayed  Bichi’s convoy from gaining entry into the controlled area.

“The action really angered Bichi as her security guards started beating up people and hitting vehicles for blocking the VIP gate.”

However, all efforts to contact the spokesman for the NNPP candidate, Sanusi Dawakintofa, were not successful as his line was switched off.

The DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, confirmed Yusuf’s arrest. He added that he was arrested for a suspected breach of security and kept in custody.

“He is in custody. He was validly taken in for a suspected breach of security,” Afunanya noted.

Another source told Daily Trust that the DSS DG’s wife allegedly ordered the assault of one of Yusuf’s aides, who was filming the incident.

The source said; “The situation escalated after she told Yusuf that they will not board the same flight as earlier scheduled, and she spotted one of his aides, Garba Kilo, filming.

“They beat him (Kilo) up badly, and this is what probably made Yusuf insist that he will board the same flight with her as scheduled, which angered her more, and she ordered his arrest.”

DSS removes Nigerian journalist from watch list, after 38 years

The Director-General, Department of State Service (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, says the service has removed a journalist, Lanre Arogundade, from its watch list in which his name featured for 38 years.

Bichi said this when a delegation from the Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) visited him in Abuja.

The Secretary of IPI Nigeria, Ahmed Shekarau, in a statement on Thursday, said the visit was part of the organisation’s ongoing high-level engagements on the safety of journalists and press freedom in Nigeria.

Shekarau said that Arogundade was on Feb. 10 intercepted and detained by officers of the DSS on his arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, from Banjul, Gambia.

He said the Director of the Lagos-based International Press Centre (IPC) went to train journalists on conflict reporting.

Speaking on the circumstances leading to the interception of the journalist on his arrival in Lagos, Bichi said the Service acted based on a decades-long watchlist, which demanded that Arogundade should be quizzed whenever he returned from a foreign country.

He said the journalist was put on the list during his days as the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) between 1984 and 1985.

The DSS boss said after Arogundade was initially removed, there arose another case of mistaken identity triggered by a request by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

According to him, the service doesn’t intercept people willfully at airports, we do so based on requests from other government agencies who may have issues with the persons affected.

Bichi emphasised the need for close collaboration between the media and the service.

He said it was necessary to address many of the ‘misconceptions’, because their mission was peace, adding that the service was too friendly to be antagonistic toward the media.

Earlier, the President of IPI Nigeria, Musikilu Mojeed, lamented the rising incidents of violation of the rights of journalists while performing their constitutional duties.

Mojeed said that journalists had the duty of upholding the people’s right to know and holding governments, individuals and corporations accountable.

Citing the 2021 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, he lamented the ranking of Nigeria as one of West Africa’s most dangerous and difficult countries for journalists.

According to him, journalists are often spied on, attacked, arbitrarily arrested or even killed.

He reiterated the commitment of IPI Nigeria in ensuring credible and independent journalism, media freedom, freedom of speech and the free flow of news and information.

According to him, journalists will always stand firm and resist any measure or action that threatens these matters and principles for which we stand.

He said all oppressive and repressive policies and actions directed at the media must be resisted so as not to allow authoritarianism, poor governance and corruption to thrive in Nigeria.

“As we all know, Section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution is clear in compelling “the press, radio, television and other agencies of the mass media to, at all time, be free to uphold the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people,” he said.

He appealed to the DSS DG to educate and prevail on officers and men of the Service all over the country to desist from harassment of journalists.

He also urged them not to allow themselves to be used by politicians, public office holders and other individuals who happen to be on the wrong side of media reporting.

According to him, such aggrieved individuals should be advised to seek redress in court instead of coming to the DSS.

The president informed his host that IPI Nigeria would henceforth demand accountability in any case of harassment of journalists in the country.

“For a start, we are opening a black book to document all security personnel and other individuals involved in the harassment of journalists in Nigeria.

“The records so gathered will be shared periodically with embassies, and all relevant international and human rights groups across the world.

“We will use the records for intense advocacy with a view to getting perpetrators to be held accountable one way or another,” he said.
