Zamfara govt denies “paying huge funds” to bandit leaders

The Zamfara State Government says it remains resolute in the fight against banditry, kidnapping and other criminality in the state. The state government disowned some documents being circulated which insinuated that it had released huge funds to some bandits’ kingpins for dialogue in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Nakwada who address newsmen in Gusau on Thursday said the documents “were not only fake but also mischievous, misleading, malicious and false.”

Nakwada said that the information was completely false and the documents with his signature and other top government officials being circulated by some social media outlets were forged.

He said the security agencies had been properly briefed and were on trail to track down the social media  source.

The official also faulted the claims that money was paid to some media promoters under the  guise of “reconciliation efforts” from the state Security Trust Fund.

“This is very crucial that we address this matter with transparency and urgency. Ordinarily, we should have ignored this, like we have ignored many other fabricated lies aimed at distracting the administration of Gov. Dauda Lawal from its commitment in rescuing and rebuilding the state.

“But due to the sensitivity of the security, which remains one of the priorities of this administration, we are compelled to make some clarifications,” the SSG said.

Nakwada said to set the records straight, the purported memo allegedly said to have originated from his office to Gov. Dauda Lawal was entirely fake and mischievous.

“The state government has consistently announced its firm stance against negotiating with the bandits and terrorists. We still maintain the position that we will not negotiate with terrorists.

Our administration has been unequivocal in its approach to addressing the security challenges facing our state,” Nakwada explained.

He said the state government had implemented strategic measures to combat the menace of banditry, adding that the efforts were always guided by integrity, accountability and an unwavering commitment to the safety and well being of people.

“The fabricated document and the baseless claims it contains are not only distracting but also an attempt to erode the trust and confidence that the people of Zamfara have on Gov Lawal’s administration to restore peace and order,” he said.

The SSG recalled that the previous administrations had tried dialogue with bandits and it did not succeed.

“Unfortunately, the dialogue not only fail, but also complicated the problem by empowering these terrorists to become more daring which is backfiring today. How can we continue to repeat the same thing and expect different results.

“We believe that the fake memo is part of the sinister attempts to undermine what we are making towards achieving lasting peace and security across the lengths and breadths of the state.

“On behalf of Zamfara government, I am using this medium to call on the general public to remain vigilant and not to fall prey to the deceitful tactics employed by those who wish to derail our mission,” Nakwada added.

The SSG stressed the need for Zamfara people to stay united to face the challenges head-on, observing that their collective resolve was the cornerstone of strength and success.

He recalled that the state government had introduced Community Protection Guards, also known as Askarawa to assist the conventional security forces in the fight against banditry.

“We have been collaborating and sharing intelligence with all security establishments including law enforcement agencies in the state to prosecute this fight.

“Additionally, we have fortified our technical capabilities by deploying advanced surveillance systems and communication tools, which have significantly enhanced our ability to detect and respond to threats in real time.

“On behalf of His Excellency, Gov. Lawal, I commend the efforts of our gallant security agencies for the sacrifices they are making to secure our state,” said.

The SSG reiterated the committement of the governor to fostering a collaborative environment where community members and local law enforcement would work together seamlessly.

“The partnership is essential in reporting suspicious activities and ensuring a swift response to any security concerns. As a government, we wish to assure the public that we will continue taking all necessary measures within the ambit of the law to ensure the safety and security of our people,” Nakwada assured.

Also, the State Commissioner for Justice, Abdul’Aziz Sani, SAN said the state government would take legal action against the mischief makers.

“We are going to track the mischief makers who forged official document and take serious legal action against them,” he said.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mahmud Dantawasa also denied the allegations that the state was involved in mining activities in the state.

Dantawasa said the state government respects and abides  by the federal government’s policy as regards mining activities in the state.

According to him, the federal government’s ban on mining activities remains in force and Zamfara government respects that.

Zamfara 8: NYSC members released by kidnappers share experience

Two members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who were among those kidnapped while on their way for the mandatory national service, have shared their experiences in the den of their abductors.

Two of the rescued youth corps members spoke about their experience. Estudio Emmanuel from Akwa Ibom said it was a traumatic experience, adding that “I thank God Almighty, the Army and the NYSC for my release.

“I am also thankful to the media for all their support and for everything they have done to ensure the rescue was successful.”

Victoria Udoka, also from Akwa Ibom, thanked the NYSC boss and the Nigerian Army for ensuring their release.

Mr Eddy Megwa, the retiring NYSC Director, Information and Public Relations, said the rescue of the last kidnapped PCM was the climax of his exit from public service.

Megwa, who retired from the scheme on Friday, said that the scheme went through thick and thin to ensure their release.

“This, we did, to ensure that the operations conducted toward the release of these corps members are smooth and successful and we thank God all of them are here and they are alive. We have seen them and we thank God for the prayers of all Nigerians.

“We thank God for the operation of the media, the steadfast nature of the parents who believe in Nigerian government, especially the military, toward the rescue of these young ones.”

Meanwhile, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, NYSC DG has said the last of the eight Prospective Corps Members (PCM) kidnapped in Zamfara in August 2023 has been rescued. He made the disclosure at a news conference on Friday in Abuja.

Recall that eight PCMs and their bus driver were abducted in August 2023 in Zamfara on their way from Uyo, Akwa Ibom to Sokoto. They were going for the mandatory national service. Ahmed said that the last NYSC member was rescued on Thursday.

He explained that the rescue effort was made possible with collaboration from the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security (DSS), and traditional rulers. He added that “through the combined efforts of security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army and the NYSC, the mission started with the rescue of the first set of corps members.

“Even though they were abducted at the same time, they were rescued in the following sequence. On Aug. 30, 2023, we rescued the first PCM, Esudue Emmanuel, while Victoria Udoka was rescued on Oct. 20,  2023, then Abigail Sandy and Sabina Ika who were  rescued on Dec. 7.

“Also, Oyo-Obong Udofia was rescued along with the driver of the vehicle on Feb. 3, 2024, Daniel Bassey on Feb. 8, while Glory Thomas regained freedom on June 9. Meanwhile,  the last PCM, Solomon Bassey, was rescued on Thursday, Aug. 23.”

He added that Bassey was qualified for the NYSC discharge certificate. The director-general noted that no ransom was paid for the release of any of the youth corps members.”No state government brought any amount for their rescue as claimed in the media.

“I must state that I have not received one naira from any state government so far in the name of the rescue of these corps members.”

Ahmed, therefore, expressed gratitude to God, the security agencies and Nigerians for keeping the faith while the PCMs were held in captivity.

On the fate of the kidnappers, he said that the culprits had been killed and no arrest had been made to the best of his knowledge.

Why no one protested in Zamfara – PDP

The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the nationwide protests by some groups did not reach the north-western state because of Gov Dauda Lawal’s good governance.

Its acting Chairman, Muktar Lugga, stated this on Friday in Gusau while reviewing the protests that have turned violent and degenerated into a looting spree in some neighbouring states.

“Zamfara residents are happy with the state administration; they are happy that much is being achieved.

“Government has initiated many programmes and policies that have been beneficial. It has declared a state of emergency on education and health. It has also paid a backlog of gratuities.

“The administration has also constructed, or reconstructed, roads. It has renovated and equipped schools and hospitals and intervened in agricultural businesses, among others,” he said.

He agreed that there was hardship in the land, but expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu’s efforts would address the socioeconomic challenges of the country.

“In addition to what the state government is doing, we will continue to pray for the president to succeed in fixing the country’s economy.

“Hardship is everywhere, but all tiers of government are taking necessary measures to tackle the situation,’’ he said.

Lugga urged the people to continue to be law-abiding and pray for leaders to succeed in overcoming challenges affecting the country.

Gusau and other towns in the state have been quiet with no one showing up for the demonstration on Friday, the second day of the activity that is expected to continue till Aug. 10.

We’ll resist any move to destroy our party – Zamfara APC

The Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says it will resist any attempt by some selfish politicians to destroy the party in the state.

This is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Monday by the State APC Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris.

Idris said that the APC leadership in the state under Alhaji Tukur Danfulani would  resist any plan to destroy the party using all necessary mechanisms at their disposal.

He alleged that some sponsored groups of party members were hired to form factions with the aim of destroying the APC in the state as part of their way of forming what they call a ‘Mega party’.

Idris said, “We are not going to be deterred by mischievous media campaigns and abuses against our party leaders.

“The state APC leadership is ready for them at any point ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We know the contract they collected from their pay masters, let me inform you that this time around has failed on arrival because all well-meaning APC members in the state know your direction”

The APC spokesperson advised the sponsored groups not to bite the fingers that fed them, saying, ” they should not do so  if they want to succeed.

“We don’t want to join issues with the political contractors and blind followers of selfish politicians.

“Our amiable President Bola Tinibu, the National Secretariat of the APC and the APC leaders in the state, our former Governors, Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence and Sen. Abdul’aziz Yari are aware of any evil machinations against the party.”

  • 140 days in kidnappers’ captivity – By Etim Etim

140 days in kidnappers’ captivity – By Etim Etim

    By Etim Etim

In the evening of August 17, 2023, twelve Akwa Ibom persons were abducted along Sokoto-Zamfara expressway as they travelled to Sokoto. Eleven of them were young men and women reporting for their NYSC camp for the mandatory one-year service, while one was the driver of the Akwa Ibom Transport company-branded bus in which they were travelling. Months passed, and one by one, the captives were released as the abductors received huge sums of ransoms from the families of the abductees. By the middle of June, 11 abductees have been released. I have followed this story with the keenness of a brain surgeon. On November 27, I wrote a piece titled, ‘’100 days in captivity: the story of the abducted corps members’’. I followed it up with another one on December 23. I asked the authorities, including the NYSC management, to do all in their power to get them out.  I argued that the government of Akwa Ibom State had a moral responsibility to intervene and facilitate their release since they were only going to serve their motherland. I also made efforts to reach the NYSC DG and hear from him on what the agency has been doing.

Last week, I met with one of the abducted girls. It was facilitated by one of her professors. Outwardly, she looks like any other young Akwa Ibom lady, but inside, she carries a scar, an emotional wound. She sobbed intermittently as she recalled the traumatic experience in vivid details. For obvious reasons, I will conceal her identity. Her story:

‘’I graduated in business administration in 2021 and was called up in 2023 for the NYSC scheme. I was posted to Sokoto State and I really looked forward to serving the country. I love the NYSC scheme; the khaki trousers and white vest; the parades; the drills; the opportunity to travel to other parts of the country, meet other Nigerians and see the vastness of the country and all that. We boarded the bus at the AKTC terminus in Uyo in the morning of August 16. We were all would-be corps members; some of us were heading to Abuja and Kano, but 11 of us were going to Sokoto. We arrived Abuja in the evening and spent the night at the AKTC terminus there. Early the following morning, August 17, we set off to Kano where some people disembarked; and eleven of us proceeded to Sokoto.

‘’Around 7.40 pm, on the Sokoto-Zamfara expressway, we ran into a roadblock mounted by kidnappers, on both sides of the expressway. They fired sporadically into the air and ordered all 12 of us (11 would-be corps members and the driver) out of the vehicle. As we were being marched into the bush, three of us escaped, leaving nine of us (four men and five women) with the captors. We walked all night in the bush till we got to their camp where there was a hut, but we slept in the open, on the ground, in the bush, in the rain and sunshine, day and night. I was released on December 7, after spending three months and two weeks with the kidnappers in captivity. I turned 27 in captivity on Friday, December 1. It was the worst experience of my life. We were beaten every day, mostly in the mornings, with iron rod; fed once in two or three days with rice which we cooked without ingredients – just white rice no salt; no pepper; nothing. We slept on the bare ground in the bush, in the same clothes that we had on when we were captured. We had our baths once in two or three weeks in a stream about a kilometer away.  A lot of us fell sick and nearly died. I was very sick too.

On December 7, I was released with another girl – two of us. They led us back to the expressway. I was very sick and could barely walk. On the road, NYSC officials and military personnel were waiting for us. They came in armoured military vehicles, picked us and took us to a hospital in a nearby town where we spent two days before we were taken to a military hospital in Kaduna where we spent about three weeks.

I enrolled in the NYSC scheme after I left the hospital and I am now serving at (name withheld). I understand that the bus driver was released early this year.

My father is late, but my mother is alive, dealing in petty business. My elder brother raised money, sold things and borrowed money to pay for the ransom. He travelled to Zamfara twice, bringing the money to designated point along the expressway for the abductors. We were released randomly as the kidnappers did not even identify the abductee on whose behalf ransoms were paid.

I thank God for keeping us alive and rescuing us from captivity. I still suffer from trauma. I feel unsafe and I’m always afraid, anxious and apprehensive. I salute the NGOs, activists and journalists like you who worked for our release. I have not been contacted by any official of Akwa Ibom State government, but I am grateful to the management of the NYSC for doing all they could to rescue us. I pray for the remaining person in captivity’’.

Jaji said that the state APC leadership has not followed constitutional provisions of the party.
