School children abduction, I told you so – Dele Sobowale

“Zamfara abduction’ll be the last.” President Buhari. March 1, 2021.”

Twice in March, after President Buhari had announced on March 1, 2021, that the Zamfara abduction of school children would be the last, I wrote on these pages that “If you believe that, you will believe anything.” Today, as several cases of raids on schools have occurred, even Buhari’s spokesmen must now have run out of words in his defence. What we now have in Nigeria is like what the Viet Namese called America during their war in the 1960s – a Paper Tiger. Millions of us who thought that nobody could be worse than Jonathan must now admit one thing. We were wrong; dead wrong. This is the wrong General for this war and we will suffer the consequences of voting him to power. At the risk of being accused of self-praise, I must state that nobody else in Nigeria had predicted that calamity that had befallen us, since 2015, as accurately. May be I should compile a book of all the predictions on insecurity, economy, poverty, food insecurity, power generation and especially The Next Level – which Nigerians were told in 2019 will result in Anarchy.

“Numerous are the streams that lead to social prosperity, but all spring from the same source; and that is public education.” Gaspar Jovellanos, 1744-1811.

VANGUARD BOOK OF QUOTATIONS, VBQ p 46.

I read Jovellanos in 1967 while in search of what the poor countries must take as their top priority if they intend to catch up with more advanced countries, the Spanish writer made a strong case for education – even ahead of agriculture, security and good governance. According to him, a society which disturbs the process of educating its people – especially the young — is heading for chaos.

Chaos is here in Nigeria in the Education sector. For the first time, anywhere in the world since history began, parents sending their kids to school, must save for tuition, books, uniform, transport and feeding. They must also save to pay the ransom demanded by bandits. Under President Buhari, the unthinkable has occurred. Education in the North has come almost to a halt. The roll-back of civilisation to the Stone Age has started. Obviously, the man has no clue concerning how to prevent our slide into barbarism; and his world view is as severely limited as his education. There is nothing for Nigeria to build on.

    LEADER WITHOUT FOLLOWERS

“Bandits hold 348 students; UNESCO sounds warning as ACF lampoons FG.”

    News Report, July 7, 2021.

Last week, the UNESCO had this to say about the calamity in the Nigerian education sector under Buhari. “No child should ever have to choose between education and their life, but, this is often the case in many countries including some communities in Nigeria, as education becomes the target of direct and constant attacks resulting in the death, injuries and abduction of learners and educational personnel.”

The UNESCO should not be surprised about the “Devil’s alternative” – your education or your life — that Northern kids are facing. A few years back, a government spokesman had announced on television to land owners and farmers “Your land or your life”. That is the hell on earth in which Nigerians now live. Unfortunately, the North will suffer more. It was well behind the South and the world in education before now. All the gains of almost ten years will be lost this year alone; there might be few schools open in the North for several years.

Until Buhari, the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, had stood solidly behind every Northern Head of State – right or wrong. Even kleptomaniac Abacha enjoyed their support until the end. They started in 2015 following the same script. But now, they are the most endangered species of Nigerians. They constitute the few oases, the Haves, in a vast Northern desert of Have-nots. And, as I warned in April 2019 in an article titled “From Begging to Demanding: The Revolt of Almajiris”, the present Northern elite will pay dearly for the entrenched inequities of their fore-fathers and theirs. The millions of people they failed to educate are poised to terrorise them. And in “From Maigadi To Megida”– published this year, I gave a true life example of how the Have-Nots in the North are now increasingly calling the shots – even in Buhari’s Katsina State.

ACF members have joined the ranks of those who no longer follow Buhari. When you add almost the entire South and the Middle Belt Forum, it is clear that Buhari is already suffering a fate which US President Lyndon Johnson, 1908-1973, described, when he said “The worst thing that can happen to a leader is to look back and see that nobody is following.” The bandits who are thrashing his legacy obviously despise him. Buhari’s only real followers are now those he employs and who are compelled to continue with their group self-deception.

“A man in a suit of armour need not be brave.”

    Gustave Flaubert, 1812-1880, VBQ p 24.

It is becoming crystal clear that Buhari’s security forces can only move against unarmed civilians in the South East; send 50 fully armed men to Sunday Igboho’s house to destroy it. But, none of them will volunteer to go to Borno State to confront equally armed Boko Haram fighters. All their bravery is limited to when they have overwhelming power in their favour. Nothing more. They cannot protect the kids or communities in the North from being attacked by bandits and people abducted. That is now obvious.

KADUNA: A TRAGEDY WAITING TO HAPPEN

“To know that which before us lies in daily life is the prime wisdom…”

    John Milton, 1608-1674, VBQ p 275.

Of all the tragedies which had befallen Nigeria, none breaks my heart more than the calamity which had swamped Kaduna State since El-Rufai became Governor. In February 2016, in an article titled “Before Kaduna State explodes” the following warning was made to all stakeholders in that state.

“BEFORE KADUNA STATE EXPLODES – 1

All religions must be tolerated…For everyman must get to heaven his own way.

Frederick the Great, 1712-1786. VANGUARD BOOK OF QUOTATIONS, VBQ, p 212.”

Our country is bleeding profusely from the blows inflicted on it by the apparently unending Boko Haram insurgency; another possibly prolonged round of blood-letting has started with the pro-Biafra movement which recently claimed reportedly over twenty lives in Aba on February 7, 2016. The last thing we need now is another religious conflict; and certainly not in Kaduna state. Yet, the stage is being set, even if inadvertently, for one. That would constitute the mother of all tragedies to befall Nigeria.

Even my plea to the people of Kaduna not to re-elect El-Rufai or expect bedlam was ignored. He was re-elected and the people of Kaduna are suffering the consequences of choosing wrongly. Unfortunately, El-Rufai still has until May 29, 2023 to torture them. He must run away from the state, and stay out, for dear life – once the battalion of armed escorts guarding him are removed. When he finally departs, he will leave behind a state which will need at least twenty years, and at least three successive better Governors to repair the damage done.

HISTORY IS BEING WRITTEN; THEY WANT TO GAG MEDIA

“Journalism is the first rough draft of history.” US Editor of Newspaper.

It never occurred to me how true that statement was until I read it and thought about it for some time. Now, more than ever, in the Age of Internet, governments are having the histories of their tenure written every minute. And, they have lost the power to suppress unfavourable reports. A few totalitarian nations, under the thumb of heartless despots try their best. But, they are losing the battle. Communications technologies have defeated them.

That is why the first people they try to silence are journalists and media commentators. The reason bad governments target the media is quite simple.

“Every government is run by liars; and nothing they say should be believed.”

    I . F. Stone, 1907-1989, VBQ p 80.

My eldest brother, late Chief Sanu Sobowale, started his career in government as the Private Secretary to late Alhaji Adegbenro who was the Minister of Lands and Labour in the Awolowo Government of Western Region. I was too young then to know anything about governments. In 1979, after the victory of the Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, in Lagos State, he was appointed the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney – General under Governor Jakande. By then, I had known a lot about governments; and my compilation of materials for the VANGUARD BOOK OF QUOTATIONS had started. Gold’s observation was already among them. I recollect one day, after Daddy, as I called him, had made statements praising the Jakande administration, jokingly replying that I read somewhere that governments are not always truthful. His mood darkened. Perhaps the only thing that saved me from a dirty slap was the distance from where he sat behind his desk and where I sat. After catching his breath, he then said. “Dele don’t believe that about every government. Ours is honest.” Only history of governments in Lagos can determine that if it ever written. Meanwhile, he readily agreed with me when I called Shagari’s government “a bunch of bloody liars”; and even provided some examples of the lies that the NPN was peddling.

So, it comes as no surprise to me that those in the Buhari administration will not like their falsehoods exposed. For them, Buhari is the best thing to have happened to Nigeria. The only way they can look at their own faces in the mirror and keep their sanity is to embrace the group’s lies. Furthermore, they must fight with everything at their disposal any attempt – particularly media – to present the truth. Efforts to introduce draconian laws are familiar steps taken by governments which have failed woefully as the Buhari/APC government.

    Furthermore, being typically forgetful of history and lacking foresight, they ignore the fact that they will not be in government for ever. Major El-Mustapha (rtd) was Abacha’s Chief Security Officer, CSO; and widely regarded as the second most powerful man in Nigeria. I can testify to his brutality against the media. When Abacha died and he was removed as CSO, I wrote an article titled “The Hunter Becomes The Hunted”. Despite my four trips to detention under him, I advised him to run away “because if you don’t and your enemies catch you, you may not see your bedroom again for years.” He ignored the warning;

he was caught and tried by who he treated with disdain; sentenced to life imprisonment. It was the Supreme Court which eventually sprung him loose after spending ten years in jail. He maintained his innocence throughout. Guess who was publishing his story – the same Nigeria media he wanted silenced.

Buhari’s presidential history is being written everyday. Nobody can hide the ugliness. Schools were closed and farms ravaged under Buhari’s watch. Period. “Even God cannot change the past” –Agathon, 447-401B.C.

Bandits kidnap 60, kill village head in fresh Zamfara attack

Bandits abducted at least 60 people and killed one person in a raid of five villages in Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara on Friday night.

The attackers rode on over 70 motorbikes into the villages and fired sporadically into the air, a police official and several residents said on Saturday.

They killed a village head, a police official and council member for the area said.

Reports said the village head died when a rocket was fired into his home.

The attacks caused panic in the area.

“The armed bandits rode on over 70 motorbikes and each motorbike was (carrying) three people with weapons destroying properties and abducting people,” Junaidu Badarawa, one of five people who were kidnapped but later released, said by phone.

It was the second major attack by bandits.

Early in July, bandits also struck in the state, killing 35 people.

Bandits have killed 35 persons after an assault on five communities of Faru district located in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Gudan-Baushi, Gidan-Adamu,Gudan-Maidawa, Tsauni, and Wari communities woke up to the marauders’ invasion in the late hours of Thursday morning on motorcycles numbering over 100.

The state Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Shehu confirmed the incident. He however stated that efforts to reach the affected communities on time proved abortive due to the poor road network.

The assailants were said to have shot sporadically at the unsuspecting residents while destroying houses and properties.

“The police personnel tried their best to reach the affected communities on receiving the information that the bandits were there but unfortunately they could not reach the places because of the bad roads,” he said.

He insisted the “police are currently working tirelessly” to bring the bandits to justice.

Banditry and kidnap have become commonplace in Zamfara with the abduction of 317 female students from a government school in early February being amongst one of the growing cases of the menace.

Angry youths armed with weapons recently staged a violent protest along the Gusau – Kaura Namoda Highway decrying the state of insecurity.

Angry youths armed with weapons staged a violent protest along the Gusau – Kaura Namoda Highway decrying the state of insecurity. and attacks that the people of the area have suffered at the hands of the bandits.

Addressing a press conference on April 2, the Zamfara State Commissioner of Information, Ibrahim Dosara, revealed that no fewer than 2,619 people were killed in the state between 2011 and 2019.

He added that bandits abducted 1,190 people from various parts of Zamfara in the last eight years, and over 100,000 people were displaced from their ancestral homes as a result of bandits’ activities, while 14,378 livestock were rustled within the period.

Dosara noted that the Zamfara State government has spent the sum of N970 million on payment of ransom to bandits to secure the release of kidnapped victims since 2011.

He lamented that there were more than 100 different camps and over 30,000 bandits operating across Zamfara and beyond, but the state governments would continue with its amnesty programme for bandits as part of measures to secure its people.

  • Anambra APC: Another Rivers, Zamfara loading, By Ehichioya Ezomon

Anambra APC: Another Rivers, Zamfara loading, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
The press has derisively labelled the outcome of an election to pick a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State as “Abiodun’s primary” that produced a “Facebook result.”
You wonder who’s “Abiodun” and what has he got to do with a primary in Anambra! Well, he’s Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who chaired the APC primary election committee for the November 6, 2021, governorship poll in Anambra.
According to ensuing protestations by 13 of the APC aspirants for the governorship, there’s no election on Saturday, June 26, at the 326 wards in the 21 local government areas of Anambra.
The dissenters claimed that officials and materials for the exercise came late in the day, and thus no primary took place, imagining where Governor Abiodun got the figures he announced to declare Senator Andy Uba as winner of the election by a landslide.
Results from the open ballot (Option A4) mode of election show that of the reported 348,490 votes cast, Uba scored 230,201 votes to his closest rival, Johnbosco Onunkwo’s total of 28,746 votes.
Other aspirants’ scores are: Chidozie Nwankwo – 21,281, George Moghalu (18,596), Azuka Okwuosa (17,189), Godwin Okonkwo (5,907), Paul Orajiaka (4,348), Ben Etiaba (4,244), Ikoobasi Mokelu (3,727), Edozie Madu (3,636), Geoff Onyejeagbu (3,414), Nwokafor Daniel (3,335), Maxwell Okoye (2,540), Kwebuike Ifeanyi (1,466).
Governor Abiodun had described the results he declared at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Agulu Lake, early on Sunday, June 27, as emanating from a “transparent primary election.”
But 10 of the aspirants, their supporters and a large swath of members of the APC in Anambra dismissed the governor’s declaration as a “Facebook result” that had no bearing to what allegedly happened on the day of the primary.
Actually, Dr Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment and APC’s leader in Anambra, had informed Governor Abiodun of a statewide absence of officials and materials for the primary.
A statement by the Media Office of Senator Ngige, at his hometown of Alor, Idemili South of Anambra, minced no words in calling for postponement of the primary to Tuesday, June 29.
The statement reads: “Your Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Chairman of the Anambra State Primary Committee, good day. As I write you now, 4:25 p.m., Saturday, 26th June, I’m in my home town, Alor, with two electoral wards and there is no sign of any governorship primary election.
“My inquiries and investigation show that the story is the same all around the 326 wards of the 21 local government areas in the state. As a result, most party members have left for home, having waited since 8:00 a.m.
“I discussed with your member, Distinguished Senator Ken Nnamani, and I’ll advise you call the panel members, to shift the exercise to Tuesday, June 29th, to also enable you tidy up some issues raised by aspirants.”
Those issues were similar to Ngige’s: alleged non-conduct of the APC governorship primary on June 26, contrary to Governor Abiodun’s declaration and return on same.
After a closed-door meeting in Awka, the capital city, the aspirants, led by Chief Moghalu, briefed the press, tabling their grievances, and the obvious consequences of the APC upholding the return of Uba as the party candidate in the November election.
Moghalu said: “There was no election in Anambra State last Saturday. Opportunity was not provided for our people to choose who they desire to represent them in the forthcoming election.
“Whatever you do in the primary election has a way of affecting the main election, and with what happened on Saturday, we are not sure what we are heading for.
“We are here because an election did not hold and the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, came out to announce a result and expects us to accept it. We are here to tell you that election did not happen anywhere in the state.
“You all will agree with me that we have been here in the last six months building support bases in the state and meeting our party members, and in the end, election did not hold.
“They started distribution (of materials) at after 3 p.m., and in some places 6 p.m., and… arrangements for electricity and security were not made; so how will the people vote?
“The result Abiodun announced is Facebook result. We are asking for free, fair and credible primary; but if it must be by consensus, then it must be with our agreement, not imposition of someone on us. We are going to report to the president (Muhammadu Buhari); he needs to know that there was no election in the state.
“There will be consequences if the NEC of our party refuses to listen to us. Election did not take place anywhere in Anambra State except Governor Abiodun wants to tell us that the election was held in someone’s bedroom.”
Though the aspirants didn’t specify the nature of “consequences” that might attend fielding Uba as the APC candidate, the party’s fiasco in Rivers and Zamfara in the 2019 general election was a culmination of the aftermath of congresses/primaries.
While the courts barred the Rivers chapter from fielding candidates for the Governorship and State and National Assembly positions, all but the presidential election won by the APC in Zamfara were awarded to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because it (APC) failed to conduct the primaries in line with the laws.
As Uba shops for “hallelujah groups” to back his candidature, with “APC Patriots” already declaring solidarity for him, some aggrieved APC aspirants are taking the legal route, such that doomed the party in several strongholds across the country in the 2019 polls.
The poser: What would it have caused the APC committee to refer the grievances of the aspirants to the party headquarters, to secure a fresh primary, and thus assuage the feelings of majority of members that have condemned the June 26 election?
Elsewhere, there seems a relative calm in the PDP, with its candidate, Chief Valentine Ozigbo, receiving acclaims from party stalwarts, and a Certificate of Return on Wednesday, June 30.
The APC may award Uba a certificate, but that could spell the party’s failure in the November poll, unless the aggrieved aspirants are pacified to work for his emergence as governor.
Can’t the APC learn from its bitter vicissitudes of 2019, and 2020? Or is the party jinxed, considering that what it gathers with one hand, it scatters almost immediately with the other hand?
The APC couldn’t have hoped for a better fortune than it has got in late 2020 and the first half of 2021, with the defection to its fold of three PDP governors in Chief Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Prof. Ben Ayade (Cross River) and Alhaji Bello Matawalle (Zamfara).
The good tiding may continue for the party in the second half of 2021 and beyond, but only if it toed the path of transparency in its internal democratic processes, devoid of “Facebook results.”
Mr. Ezomon, Journalist and Media Consultant, writes from Lagos, Nigeria.
  • Why I declined defecting with Governor Matawalle to APC – Zamfara Deputy Governor

The Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mahdi Aliyu, on Wednesday, said he chose to remain in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)to honour the mandate given to the party by the Supreme Court.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Aliyu and a member of the House of Representatives declined to join Governor Bello Matawalle and other elected officials in defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.

“Remember how the Supreme Court brought us to power. That’s why I am thankful to God and chose to remain in the PDP,” Aliyu told BBC Hausa Service.

Aliyu, who is a son of a former Minister of Defence, Ali Gusau, opposed moving into the APC, arguing that the apex court awarded the electoral victory in 2019 to the PDP and not just its candidates.

Aliyu’s principal, Governor Bello Matawalle defected to the ruling APC, ending months of speculation and denial.

Matawalle announced his defection late evening at the Gusau Trade Fair Complex at an event attended by APC governors, ministers and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

The deputy governor said he was never consulted about the plan to defect, “and I heard everything as a rumour until by 6:00 pm on 29th June he announced his defection to the ruling APC.

“Since my father brought the party we never for once left the party. They met us in the PDP and they will left (leave) us there,” the deputy governor said.

The deputy governor said the PDP will seek redress in court over the “desertion of its elected officials.”

Aliyu also said he will continue as the deputy governor to serve the four years constitutional mandate given to him.

When asked, Aliyu ruled out being impeached. “That is a big work. I have a good working relationship with the governor, he sends me on important assignments, including PDP governors meetings.

“It’s not a new thing in Nigeria politics for governor and his deputy to belong to different political parties and complete their constitutional mandate together and I hope this too shall come to pass in Zamfara, Aliyu said.

Banditry: Things are getting worse daily in Zamfara, Gov Matawalle cries out

Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle on Saturday said the state of insecurity in the state is worsening at an alarming rate.

He made the remark after confirming the bandit attack on Kadawa village, Zurmi Local Government Area in a special broadcast on Democracy Day.

According to the Governor, the bandits killed “many innocent people.”

“I feel saddened by this unfortunate and barbaric act of cowardice,” he said. “With a heavy heart, I convey my condolences on behalf of my family and the entire people of the State over this massacre.

“In recent weeks, the act of banditry has reverted to the ugly dimensions it had prior to the coming of my administration. The marauders kill without regard for any rules of sanity. Women, the elderly, and children are not spared. As a result, a large number of people have been displaced in nearly every town in the State.

“My dear people of Zamfara people, you are witnesses to what we have accomplished from the beginning of our administration, particularly the peace and reconciliation efforts that we initiated and achieved. As a result, we have been able to shift our violent narratives to ones of optimism and peaceful coexistence.

“Unfortunately, things suddenly took a dramatic turn, and things are getting worse by the day. It is clear that some invincible hands are plotting evil against our people with the goal of making our State as terrifying as it were in the years gone by. My constant prayer is for Allah to reveal those who are perpetrating these cruel atrocities against our people.”

The Governor urged communities to defend themselves against the bandits while pledging his administration’s commitment to securing the state.

“I assure you that we will remain steadfast in our efforts to eradicate banditry and all types of criminality from the State,” he said. “In this battle, no sacred cow. Whosoever is involved in these dastardly acts, no matter how highly placed, would be dealt with according to the law.

“We have demonstrated this commitment based on the actions we have taken in respect of Emir of Maru, Emir of Dansadau and, following yesterday’s incident, the Emir of Zurmi.

“My administration has resolved to begin implementing the recommendations of the MD Abubakar-led Committee on Finding Solutions to Banditry in Zamfara State as a next step in addressing this vexing problem. We would not spare anyone indicted by the committee’s report, no matter how high up they are.”

90 feared killed in fresh attacks on Zamfara communities

The police in Zamfara have confirmed Thursday’s attack on Kadawa village of Zurmi local government area of the state, where over 90 people were said to have been killed.
The Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Shehu Mohammed, made the confirmation to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Friday.
“Yes, l can confirm to you that an attack took place at Kadawa village of Zurmi local government where bandits took advantage of the night to strike on unsuspecting people and killed them in cold blood.
“On getting the news of the attack, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hussain Rabiu, ordered combined units of security personnel to mobilize to the area, restore peace and confidence in the communities and track the perpetrators so that they can be brought to book,” Mohammed said.
“The CP, also in company of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Nasiru Magarya, were at the affected community to condole with bereaved families,” he said.
NAN had gathered from some eye witnesses in the village that the bandits invaded the village mid Thursday, speaking in foreign languages and shooting at anyone trying to escape in the pandemonium.
One of them who simply gave his name as Lawali said 67 bodies were recovered within the village while 26 others were picked up at different locations on the outskirts of the village with several others wounded.
NAN also reported that Governor Bello Muhammad Matawalle called on the people of the state earlier Friday, at his special two-year anniversary prayers, to rise up and defend their communities against attacks.

Insecurity: Matawalle visits Zamfara Police Headquarters, asks officers to enforce Buhari’s shoot-at-sight order

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Mohammed on Tuesday visited the State Police Command, asking operatives to enforce the shoot-at-sight order issued by President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle the insecurity in the country.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that in March, President Buhari directed security agencies to shoot anyone seen with AK-47 while ordering a clampdown on bandits.

He had also on March 11 emphasised that security chiefs had received marching orders to go harder on criminals, including to shoot anyone found illegally with rifles.

“During the visit, the governor reiterated the order that police and other government security agencies are to effectively implement the presidential order to shoot at any bandit, person or group of people seen with AK-47 or any weapons on the spot,” a statement issued by the governor’s spokesman, Jamilu Magaji partly read.

According to the governor, only those approved by law or the security agencies are to carry guns and other sophisticated weapons noting that those found in unlawful possession of guns should be shot instantly.

Matawalle said his administration is fully in support of the policies and programmes of President Buhari, especially in his bid to ensure the security of the lives and property of citizens.
