    Gas explosion kills three children, injures two in Jigawa

    No fewer than three children have died in Sara Village in Gwaram LGA of Jigawa, following a cooking gas cylinder explosion.

    The Spokesman for the Jigawa Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdu Jinjiri, who confirmed the incident, added that two others were injured by the explosion.

    Jinijiri spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Dutse.

    “Last week, there was a fire incident in the house of one Alhaji Wada Sara, and the following people, Zainab Wada, Abdul Wada, Aliyu Wada, Fati Wada and Abdulrahman Wada, got various degrees of injuries.

    “They were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre Birninkudu in Birninkudu LGA for medical attention.

    “The incident was as a result of explosion from a cooking gas cylinder,” Jinjiri said.

    He told NAN that Fati, Zainab and Abdulrahman, aged three, two and four years, respectively, later died at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, where they were further taken.

    The spokesman advised members of the public to be careful with gas cylinders.

  • Army kill 68 bandits, recover 17 motorcycles in Zamfara

    The Nigerian Army says it has killed 68 bandits, arrested six suspected kidnappers and recovered 17 motorcycles in Zamfara from April to date.

    The Brigade Commander, 1 Army Brigade Command Sokoto, Brig.-Gen. Udeagbala Kennedy disclosed this while handing over the six suspected kidnappers to the state Commissioner of Police Mr Kenneth Ebrimson at the State Police headquarters in Gusau on Tuesday.

    He recalled bandits attacked in Birane and Bawar-Daji villages in Anka and Zurmi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state in February and April which led to the death of 64 people.

    “The Nigerian Army and other security agencies commenced clearance operation to rid out all the bandits and curtail the banditry activities in the state.

    “Today military and other security agencies were able to carry out successful operation in all nooks and crannies of the state which led to the success recorded.

    “During the period, a number of casualties on banditry activities were recorded as follows, a total 68 bandits were killed between the first week of April to date and unfortunately we lost two of our gallant men – Capt. Muhammad and Private Mijinyawa.

    “Apart from the 17 recovered motorcycles from the killed and fleeing bandits, we also apprehended six suspected kidnappers and one-gun runner.

    “I am directed by the Army headquarters to hand over the suspects and the motorcycles to the state Commissioner of Police and Director, Department of State Service (DSS) for further investigation and I hope these activities will lead to the arrest of their colleagues,” he added.

    Responding, Ebrimson attributed the successes recorded to collaborative efforts among all the security agencies in fighting insecurity in the state.

    He assured residents that security agencies would continue to do their best to ensure that they fish out kidnappers, cattle rustlers and all other criminals in order to maintain peace and stability in the state.

    The CP appealed to communities to always cooperate and give information to security agencies in order to take appreciate security measures.

  • Tragic! Six die in Zamfara auto crash

    Six persons lost their lives on Friday in Zamfara when two 18-seater commercial busses collided along Tsafe-Gusau road.

    Spokesman for Zamfara Police Command, DSP Mohammed Shehu, told newsmen that the accident was caused by overspeeding.

    “Fortunately, our men who are on constant patrol on the road, were at hand and they immediately came to the victims’ rescue.

    “Five persons died on the spot while the sixth died when our patrol team brought them to the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Gusau,” said the police spokesman.

    Shehu said that the survivors were treated at the Accident and Emergency Ward while the dead bodies were deposited in the hospital mortuary.

    He charged motorists to avoid overspeeding and reckless driving as well as ensure that their vehicles were in good condition before plying the road.

  • Again, gunmen invade Zamfara communities, many feared dead

    There was pandemonium on Friday as armed bandits invaded and attacked Kabaro and two other villages in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

    Residents and the police confirmed the attack, saying the casualty figure is yet to be ascertained.

    Residents revealed that the bandits in their dozens rode on motorbikes to attack Kabaro, Danmani Hausawa and Danmani Dakarkari.

    Details of the attack are still sketchy but a source in Maru Local Government Area, who doesn’t want his name mentioned for security reasons, said the bandits began their operation at Kabaro village on Thursday night before moving to Damani Hausawa and Damani Dankarkari in the early hours of Friday.

    Many people were reported killed in each of the villages, while many others were eventually taken to a hospital with injuries.

    The Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, Shehu Mohammad, confirmed the incident.

    Yes there was an attack on three communities of Maru Local Government Area of the state. I can’t tell the number of deaths because we are still trying to get the figures. But we have already sent our men to the areas attacked by the bandits.

    Mobile police and others security agencies too have been deployed to the affected villages to restore law and order and to fish out the perpetrators for prosecution. We are doing our best and will continue to do our best to protect lives and property of the people,” he said.

    Recall that the state governor, Abdulazeez Yari had earlier issued a shoot on sight order to security agencies of anyone carrying arms to curb the incessant killings in the state.

     

     

  • Scores feared dead as bandits attack two Zamfara villages

    Bandits have on Wednesday attacked two villages in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara, killing some people.

    The bandits attacked a mining site at Kuru-kuru village and also ambushed some people from the neighbouring Jarkuka village as they mobilised to bring help to Kuru-kuru.

    A witness, Sadi Musa, said scores of people were killed at the mining site on Wednesday evening which forced the miners to flee for safety.

    Musa said when residents from the nearby Jarkuka came later to join the Kuru-kuru survivors in burying the dead, the gunmen attacked again, and killed more people.

    Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Mohammed Shehu said,’’ we are aware of the attack but I cannot give you details now until my commissioner is fully briefed’’.

    The bandits had attacked Bawan Daji village in the same Anka Local Government Area two weeks ago and killed over 30 people.

    They returned the following day and killed mourners at a graveyard.

    This led to the deployment of Air Force and Army personnel to the area to contain the situation.

    The soldiers had since swung into action and killed several bandits.

    Only 28 students registered for Common Entrance examination in Zamfara – FG

    The Ministry of Education has revealed that only 28 students registered for National Common Entrance Examination in Zamfara State.

    Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said the Federal Government is worried about the low number of candidates seeking admission into its 104 colleges across the country.

    In a statement released by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Priscillia Ihuoma, only 28 candidates from Zamfara State registered for the National Common Entrance examination.

    The minister urged state governments, heads of schools and interest groups to persuade school-age children in the areas with low registration to register for the examination.

    Adamu, noted that a directive had been given to leave the portal open for registration until April 13.

    The release read in part, “Ahead of the 2018 National Common Entrance Examination for admission of candidates into the 104 Federal Government colleges on Saturday, April 14, the minister has expressed worry over low registration for the examination so far.

    “According to him, the report of a meeting of major stakeholders in the education sector said candidates registered in 2018 stood at 71,294 as against 80,421 that wrote the examination in 2017.

    “The report further shows three states with the highest number of pupils registered so far are: Lagos with 24,465 candidates, the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with 7,699 and Rivers State with 4,810 candidates respectively.

    On the other hand, three states with extreme low registration are: Zamfara with only 28 candidates, Kebbi, 50 and Taraba, 95 candidates respectively.”

  • Troops reveal killing number of bandits in Zamfara

    The Nigerian Army on Thursday said its troops killed 21 armed bandits in the ongoing clearance operation at Tunga Daji in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara.

    Brig. – Gen. Texas Chukwu, the Director, Army Public Relations, said in a statement that many bandits escaped with gunshot wounds in battle with soldiers on April 4.

    He disclosed that an army officer and a soldier lost their lives in the fierce battle with the bandits.

    Chukwu said the troops recovered five AK 47; one Light Machine Gun, five AK 47 magazines and 35 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

    “Troops of 232 Battalion Zuru, on clearance patrols on Wednesday, April 4, neutralized 21 armed bandits in encounter at Tunga Daji in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

    “During the fierce battle many bandits escaped with gunshot wounds to the top of high ground close to the area.

    “Unfortunately, we lost an officer and a soldier during the encounter. The remains of the gallant troops have been evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau.”

    Meanwhile, troops deployed in Bena, acting on intelligence, have raided a bandits’ camp at Laka village in Kebbi.

    Chukwu explained in a statement that the troops killed one of the bandits and recovered an AK 47 rifle with a magazine.

    According to him, the troops were mobilised on a special operation to comb the general area and arrest any fleeing bandit.

     

  • Several dead as soldiers, bandits clash in Zamfara

    There was pandemonium in a village in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State as soldiers and bandits reportedly clash in gun battle.

    The incidence reportedly lead to the death of two soldiers.

    The chairman of Anka Local Government Area, Mustapha Gado, who confirmed the death of the two soldiers said many bandits were also killed during the operation.

    Two soldiers have been killed, we have seen the bodies and l gathered that it was a captain and a lower ranking officer.

    I am also aware that with the recent deployment of security personnel especially the military, many of the insurgents have been killed,” he said.

    Wednesday’s shootout occurs about a week after over 50 people were killed by bandits in Bawar daji district of the local government.

    Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar on Friday led a delegation on a condolence visit to the Emir of Anka following the attacks.

    The governor directed the military to shoot on sight anybody found with arms in the bush.

    Over 54 killed, 7000 displaced in Zamfara attacks – NEMA

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Wednesday confirmed that 54 persons were killed by suspected cattle rustlers in Bawar Daji District, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara state last week Wednesday.

    The agency also confirmed that a woman and her child were among those who lost their lives during the attacks.

    The agency which disclosed this based on-the-spot assessment conducted by staff recorded 71 persons injured with over 7000 displaced persons.

    NEMA said the attacks affected places like Baudi, Tungan Turkish, Doka, Zanoka, Akuzo and Dogon Ruwa.

    “About 30 houses and other essential commodities were razed, also 1000 cattle were carted away by men of the underworld,” the agency said.

    The head, Nema Sokoto Operations, Suleiman Muhammad, who led other staff of the agency on the assessment said government delegations sent to the area had to suspend their visit due to security challenges.

    Displaced persons, mostly women and children, are currently taking refuge in neighbouring Hayin Dan Bawa, Anka and Gusau, capital of Zamfara.

    The agency is expected to prepare a comprehensive report to be forwarded to the federal government for necessary action.

    Recall that the armed bandits had last week attacked Bawar Daji in Anka Local Government Area, killing over 32 persons.

    Zamfara State Governor, Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar, alongside security chiefs and members of the State Executive Council on Friday visited Emir of Anka over the killings.

    Governor Yari during the condolence visit to the Emir directed the security agencies to shoot anybody found with arms ”in the bush”.

    The governor said the laws of the country allow only security personnel to carry arms.

    “It is criminal for any person who is not a security personnel to carry arms, therefore I have ordered the security agencies in the state to shoot at sight any person who carries AK 47 or any other weapons in the bush, be Fulani, Hausa or any tribe.

    “The bandits have wasted too much of lives in the state and therefore they too do not deserve to be alive,” he said.

     

  • BREAKING: Gunmen invade Zamfara community, kill 15 herdsmen

    There was pandemonium on Thursday as gunmen believed to be cattle thieves Invaded Zamfara communities killing 15 herders in a renewed violence.

    “Armed bandits attacked Bawon-Daji village yesterday and killed 15 people,” the police spokesman for Zamfara state, Muhammad Shehu, said confirming the development.

    His account was corroborated by a senior local government official, Gado Anka.

    Anka said motorcycle-riding gunmen stormed the remote village in Anka district around 1:00 pm (1200GMT), shooting dead 12 residents before fleeing to a hideout in the bush.

    “They returned two hours later and attacked mourners during the funeral of the victims in the cemetery, killing three more and injuring several others,” he said.

    Rural communuties in the agrarian state are under siege from gangs who kill, loot and torching homes.

    This has prompted villages to form vigilante groups — which in turn are often accused of extra-judicial killings of suspected cattle thieves, prompting deadly reprisals by the gangs.

    It was not clear if the latest killings were as a result of reprisals.

    In February, dozens of people were killed when gunmen opened fire on traders and villagers at Birane, in the Zurmi area of the state.
