Banditry: Parents withdraw children from schools out of fear in Zamfara

The banditry activities ravaging Zamfara State for over a decade have forced indigenes of the state to be suspicious of any strange face, especially in rural areas.

Many people living in the Damba area of Gusau, the state capital, have been vacating the axis as it has become a bandits’ den, with terror attacks being unleashed unabated.

Many parents have withdrawn their children from schools for fear of being kidnapped.

Some residents in Gusau, the state capital, have expressed serious fear that with the rate the bandits were operating in many villages inside Gusau Local Government Area, they may eventually penetrate the Gusau metropolis.

The banditry activities have collapsed almost all sectors including education as many parents have withdrawn their children from schools.

A student of the Federal Polytechnic, Kauran Namoda Local Government Area of the state, popularly known as Kingsley said he was supposed to have completed his Higher National Diploma (HND) in four years but he is now spending six years due to insecurity.

“Every time the school management would close down the school and send students on compulsory break,” he lamented.

According to him, it was no longer news that the education sector had totally collapsed in the state especially when the education calendar has been totally altered due to the insecurity situation.

Between 2019 to date, available records, revealed that four government secondary schools have been attacked by the ravaging bandits and hundreds of students were kidnapped even though none was killed.

The local governments where these four government secondary schools were located are Anka, Bakura, Maradun, and Talata-Mafara.

This development has no doubt, caused a lot of setbacks in the education sector in the state, a development that led many parents to withdraw their children from boarding schools across the state.

REVEALED! ‘Everyone, even govt, benefits from insecurity’ — Bandit kingpin speaks in BBC documentary

Abu Sanni, a self-confessed bandit kingpin, says insecurity has become a business everyone benefits from.

Sanni — who says he helped mastermind the abduction of students of Government Girls Secondary School Jangebe, Zamfara — was interviewed by BBC Africa Eye in a forest in Zamfara.

The 50-minute documentary titled ‘The Bandit warlords of Zamfara’ was undertaken by Yusuf Anka, a journalist who crisscrossed remote bandit enclaves in the state.

Zamfara is one of the worst-hit states by banditry. According to a report by TheCable Index, the state topped the list of reported killings in 2021, with 703 persons reported to have died as a result of insecurity.

The BBC documentary sheds light on the mindset of bandit leaders, the booming nature of the kidnap-for-ransom business — and how insecurity in Zamfara may have been triggered by ethnic conflict between Hausa and Fulani groups.

    ‘WHY WE KIDNAPPED JANGEBE SCHOOLGIRLS’

On February 27 2021, Nigerians woke up to the heart-rending news that bandits had invaded Jangebe in Talata-Mafara LGA of Zamfara and kidnapped 279 schoolchildren. Some weeks later, they were released by their captors.

Sanni said the schoolgirls were kidnapped by his gang as revenge against the government for sending the military after them. He said his gang demanded N300 million from the government for the release of the schoolgirls but N60 million was paid.

“When the rainy season ended, they sent the military after us. We decided to show the government they should not interfere in our problems. We went to Jangebe and took the students. We wanted to get the government angry,” he said.

“We demanded N300 million but after negotiations, N60 million was paid for their release.”

The self-confessed bandit kingpin said insecurity has become a lucrative business, adding that everyone, including the government, is benefitting from the violent attacks.

“Because it has become a business. Everyone wants money. That is why things are deteriorating, from the top to the bottom,” he added.

“They say when there is insecurity, the government gets money. Everyone is benefitting. We also get money. Though for our money, blood is split, so it continues.”

Ado Aleru, a suspected bandit leader recently turbaned as Sarkin Fulani in Zamfara, was also featured in the documentary. Aleru was given a chieftaincy title despite being on the police’s wanted list since 2019.

The chieftaincy title sparked sharp criticism – a development which prompted Bello Matawalle, governor of Zamfara, to suspend the emir who awarded the title to Aleru.

Speaking in the documentary, Aleru said his gang invades villages as a form of protest against the government.

“We only protest with guns. We know no journalists. We don’t know where to protest. Our protest is to take up arms and storm villages,” he said.

The bandit kingpin said he does not kidnap people, adding that he only kills those who have been kidnapped by his gang members.

“I have never kidnapped anyone myself. My men do that. I only go and kill them,” he said, noting that he has lost count of the number of people he has killed.

One of Aleru’s allies who was not named said the bandits resorted to violence due to the alleged marginalisation of the Fulani.

“Tell me, where can we rear our animals? In your investigation, are the cattle routes still there? In the rainy season, you have to carry the cows on your head,” he told the reporter.

“You must walk on roads or take them on rocky paths where they fall and die. Even in the forest, warplanes chase us and kill our animals.

“How have the Fulani become so worthless in Nigeria? There is no veterinary hospital. We have nowhere for them(the cattle) to drink.

“Don’t cows have any value? Everyone needs meat. Everyone needs milk. Many Fulani have university degrees, the government never considers them.

“I swear, if 1,000 Hausas sit for an exam alongside a single Fulani man, they will pass all the Hausas and fail the Fulani man.”

Hassan Dantawaye, identified as one of the first bandit warlords to import AK-47 rifles to Zamfara, said the alleged injustice against Fulani triggered retaliatory attacks against the Hausa in the state.

Dantawaye, a former beneficiary of an amnesty programme, said: “Everyone, the Fulani and the Hausa, have done something wrong. For the Fulani, retaliation is their major problem. While the Hausa don’t investigate who is guilty or innocent.

“We have policemen, soldiers, governors, chairmen, even councillors, no one is stopping this situation.

“It is only when we launch an attack, they will say we (referring to Fulani people) are wrong because they don’t see what is done to us.”

A few months after he spoke with the BBC, Dantawaye’s house was burnt down — an incident that made him pick up arms again.

He alleged that soldiers supporting the Hausa were responsible for the attack on his residence, adding that the conflict is a “tribal war”.

“This was done by soldiers, not vigilantes,” he said.

“How can [there be] peace with these transgressions? There is one thing with us whenever we are called for dialogue, we honour it but later our opinions are disregarded.

“In the whole world, nobody cares about our concerns. What is done to us is not fair and must stop.”

Asked if the violent attacks are fueled by a tribal war between Hausa and Fulani, he responded affirmatively.

“Of course. If not, how can someone pass other settlements but burn down the Fulani ones? It is obvious, it is tribal. Why would a Fulani kill an innocent Hausa? Clearly, it is a tribal conflict,” he said.

  • Forum commends Gov. Bello inauguration of Community Protection Guards in Zamfara

The Arewa Development Forum for Peace and Justice has lauded the inauguration of the Community Protection Guard (CPG), against banditry in Zamfara.

This is contained in a statement by the Executive Chairman of the Forum, Alhaji Zubairu Mustafa on Sunday in Kaduna.

Mustafa said commendation came after the Forum’s meeting in Kaduna with the resolution to laud and support the idea of Gov Bello Mutawalle on security measures for protection against bandits in the state.

“However, we appeal to the governors in the North-West region to set up machinery and measures for the Joint Task Force of able youths as community-based vigilante volunteers.

“This will go a long way to complement the efforts of security operatives to fight criminal activities in the region.

“Our leaders must act now or we continue to be targets of elimination by minority marauders going about with weapons against the majority.

“Government should know that when people are frustrated, they would look for the best option for themselves which is to arm themselves on the excuse that government cannot protect them,’’ Mustafa said.

He explained that many people around Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina and Sokoto states who were victims of such carnage, endorsed the decisions.

According to him, the inauguration of CPG will reduce and checkmate bandits’ movement, fight them and stop their carnage.

“From Zurmi to Tsafe, Bakura to Maru and Shinkafi, these bandits have continued with their deadly attacks against innocent people.

“This is because security agencies are overwhelmed and could not nip the nefarious activities of these blood-thirsty terrorists, insurgents and bandits in the bud.

“In this case, Gov. Mutawalle is the man wearing the shoe and knows where it hurts, hence, our call on well-meaning Nigerians to support the call on locals to legally acquire arms, to protect and defend their communities against any form of criminal invasion.

“Therefore, we would support any leader that seems to have agreed and made a clear and acceptable decision within the ambit of law  to bring lasting peace and security to the lives and properties of citizens,’’ Mustafa said.

He stated that it was more important for a leader to play his role of saving lives and properties of his people than attending funerals or lamentations after attacks.

“Proactive measures that include supporting military and police operations, provision of logistics and giving communities right of self-defence are more important and in fact, the best options.

  • Zamfara state gov. establishes community protection guards

In an effort to curb banditry and kidnapping in parts of Zamfara state, governor Bello Matawalle has begun training for a newly-established security outfit, Community Protection Guard (CPG).

The announcement was contained in a statement by Malam Jamilu Birnin-Magaji, Press Secretary to the Governor in Gusau.

The statement said the new outfit would give needed support to the conventional security agencies in their effort to end banditry and kidnapping that had ravaged the state.

Matawalle said at the exercise, that his administration had resolved to tackle the state’s security challenges head-on by implementing new security measures.

“The Governor said the government came up with additional measures for combating insurgency in the state.

“Among the new measures is the recruitment of CPGs in each of the 19 Emirate Councils of the state.

“He said the decision to establish the CPG was informed by his administration’s desire to use possible options to deal with the increasing act of banditry causing loss of lives, untold hardships and rupturing inter-communal peace in parts of the state,” the statement said.

It said that the governor urged the guards to concentrate fully on their training as the task ahead of them was enormous and daunting.

“As Community Protection Guards, yours is a patriotic call, your names would stand out in history as people with remarkable patriotism, selflessness and love for peace.

“Only people with courage and bravery will offer to serve as guards of their communities, bravely standing up to face the brutal infamy of the bandits,” Matawalle said.

The governor also called on them to work within the parameters of the rules of engagement which would be clearly spelt out during the training.

He counselled them as newly-recruited guards, to serve as agents for the restoration of normalcy and peace in their communities.

Matawalle said at the end of the training, the CPG members would be deployed to their various communities in the 19 Emirate Councils of the state to complement the security forces in the fight against banditry and sundry crimes.

He reminded them to remain disciplined throughout the exercise and to keep in mind that they were trained for a life-saving mission that would spare their neighbourhoods from terror and suffering.

He said their efforts would restore the dignity of human life and peaceful co-existence in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Zamfara Command, CP Ayuba Elkana, said the training was part of a series of measures being taken to tackle crimes.

Elkana expressed the command’s support to Matawalle in the fight against banditry.

He urged the recruits to be law-abiding, and God-fearing in the discharge of their duties to achieve the desired goals.

APC is a party not a religion to cling unto for life – Marafa

A former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, Senator Kabiru Marafa has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a party not a religion that he will cling to for life despite disgrace.

Recall on Sunday the former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul Aziz Yari, Senator Kabiru Garba Mafara and their supporters had dumped the APC for the PDP.

Reacting to the development Marafa said “APC is not Islam, it is my religion that I can not leave for whatever reason, but a political party, I can leave and join anyone of my choice,” he said.

He described the national ruling party as another man’s compound, not a home

Marafa said the party was not fair to him as him and his supporters were treated as outcasts

He explained that even among his former party, some people fought to make sure they were frustrated out of the party they suffered to build and nurture.
According to him, the new National Chairman of the ruling party, Senator Abdulahi Adamu, cannot be of any difference from what the former Caretaker Chairman of the party, Mai Mala Buni, had done.

“Politics is about winning elections and everything, so we cannot stay in a house that we are not needed,” Marafa said.

“As far as I am concerned, I am a fulfilled person as far as this project APC is called. If there is anything left, I am waiting to see how the architect of this cruelty meted out to the people of Zamfara State, how they are going to fare in politics.

“But for now, I am happy, I told them to their faces in Kaduna that they will never benefit out of the machinations they were doing at that time, that is Mai Mala and his co-travellers. And I’m happy that they have lost out and they have lost out disgracefully.
