  • BREAKING: ZLP wins 15 out of 17 LGAs in Abia LG election

BREAKING: ZLP wins 15 out of 17 LGAs in Abia LG election

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has won 15 out of 17 local government areas in the local government election conducted in Abia State on Saturday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Abia LG election was conducted amidst late delivery of materials and other logistics hitches that delayed voting.

Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof Chima George, disclosed that ZLP won the 15 LGAs while announcing the results of the election.

Prof George announced that the Young Progressives Party (YPP) won in the Osisioma and Ugwunagbo local government areas of the State.

The Abia local government election results were announced by ABSIEC Chairman at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, where he said said that the chairmanship and councillorship polls took place in the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and that the exercise was “free fair and credible”.

“We have carried out the duty we were inaugurated on September 5 to undertake. It was not an easy task, but we went out on our way to create awareness about the elections across the state.

“It must be noted that, in recent times, this commission has not conducted an election where over 12 political parties took part, this on its own is a plus to the commission,” George said.

He stressed the election was a demonstration of the commission’s dedication, focus and efficiency. He expressed joy that the commission successfully completed, in just two months, a task that typically required six to 12 months of effort.

“I congratulate the winners and the losers too, because in any election there must be winners and losers. The most important thing is that Abia has been peaceful and I want the peace to continue.

“I appreciate the security agencies for their support, political parties for playing the game according to the rule,” George said.

TNG reports ZLP won in Isiala Ngwa South, Isiala Ngwa North, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Obingwa, Aba North, Aba South, Isuikwuato, Umunneochi, Arochukwu, Bende, and Ohafia LGAs, while the remaining two LGAs of Osisioma and Ugwunagbo were won by YPP.

The local government election in Umuahia and Aba areas of Abia took place amidst late delivery of materials and other logistics hitches that delayed voting. In places where materials came early, the voter turnout was impressive but low in areas where materials were delivered several hours behind schedule.

It was also observed that there was large turnout of voters in areas where a Chairmanship or Councillorship Candidates hail from.

In Umuahia, voting commenced between 11am and 12.45 pm in many polling units as against 8am, following the delay in the delivery of election materials.

Voter turnout was largely impressive at Aba Park Polling Unit and Polling Units 001, 002 and 018 at Umuwaya Road Primary School and Urban Ward 1 Umuwaya Primary School Polling Unit 29.

In an interview with NAN, some voters expressed disappointment over the delay in the delivery of election materials. They, however, expressed delight over the peaceful conduct of the exercise at their polling units.

A civil servant, Mr Chiwetara Okwesiri, said that he cast his vote around 2p.m. Okwesiri said that, although the delay initially dampened his zeal, he was ultimately glad to vote, saying that he was impressed by the  peaceful atmosphere.

A trader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, also said that he had a smooth experience and was able to vote for his preferred candidates.

“At first, it seemed like the election might not hold, but I am happy it went ahead as planned, and I was able to participate,” he said.

At the Abia University Primary School, Abayi, Aba, the turnout was  poor. Mr David Chimezie, an All Progressives Grand Alliance agent at Ward 3 Unit 090, expressed concern over the poor turnout of voters.

He said that only three persons voted at the unit, which was concluding endorsement of the results at the time NAN visited. He, however, said the election went on smoothly without any problem or interferences.

Mr Celestine Ogbonna said he got to his polling unit at about 11 am.

“By that time, the materials had not come and after waiting for about one hour and not seeing anything, I went back home,” he said.

At Ayaba Umueze Primary School Ward 3 unit 013, Mr Happiness Amaechi, a Zenith Labour Party agent said the turnout was massive at the unit.

He said that the polling officers came around 1pm and that voting ended when ballot papers got exhausted.

As at 4:45pm, the party agents and polling officers at the centre were still counting the votes. At Abayi Amaugwu Ward 3 Unit 010, the election started at about 2 pm and ended before 4 pm.

It was learnt that only few persons that waited for the materials were able to vote at the unit, while many others, who lacked the patience to wait, retired home earlier.

Abia LG polls: Aba residents blame ABSIEC for low voter turnout

Earlier, a cross-section of Aba electorate berated the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) for its alleged poor showing in the Saturday’s chairmanship and councillorship election in the State.

The people blamed the low voter turnout on the late arrival of ABSIEC staff and electoral materials at the polling units, which delayed the commencement of the exercise across the state.

Correspondents, who monitored the election in Aba South, report that many prospective voters, who turned up to exercise their franchise, became frustrated and left after waiting for several hours without the presence of ABSIEC officials.

At Ngwa Ward 4, materials were delivered at about 4.10pm and accreditation and voting commenced by about 4.38pm

Some voters, who spoke to NAN on the development, complained about the late delivery of election materials and officials. They alleged that the delay was delibrate on the part of the commission.

Mr Udochukwu Eze expressed joy that he finally cast his vote after waiting for a long period of time.

”I voted at Unit 13 Ward 4 and I thank God that the election did not only take place today but was very peaceful too.

“Although ABSIEC came late and many had gone home after waiting for so long but a determined voter had no option than to wait.

“I know that some are just coming from their homes to vote, while some waited nearby for the arrival of materials,” Eze said.

Another voter, Mrs Agnes Ide, expressed dismay over the delay and called on the State Government to do something so that people would not lose confidence in the electoral process.

“I almost went back home and if I had left, nothing would bring me back,” Ide said.

There were no security personnel at the polling centres visited but the exercise was generally rancour-free. Reacting to the complaints, Commissioner II in charge of Voter Education and Enlightenment in ABSIEC, Dr Kelechukwu Okere, said “it is not true that materials arrived late at the polling units”.

Okere told NAN that the commission made adequate arrangements for the seamless distribution of materials and election officials to ensure a smooth exercise.

Nigerian workers deserve living wage – ZLP

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) says Nigerian workers deserve living wage in order to cope with prevailing  economic realities and render quality service to the nation.

The Lagos State Chairman of ZLP, Mr Adekunle Mode-Adenipebi, said  this in an interview on Tuesday in Lagos.

Mode-Adenipebi, who was also the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Lagos in the 2023 elections , said that the government must go beyond minimum wage to  living wage for workers.

He was reacting to impasse between the organised labour and the Federal Government on the new minimum wage for workers, which led to the strike declared by labour unions on Monday.

“There is nothing wrong for the Federal Government to provide workers living wage far above the much talked-about minimum wage, given  the inflation rate at the moment.

“The Organised Labour is right by not agreeing with the N60,000 new minimum wage proposed by the government.

“What can N60,000 buy in the market today for a young couple not to talk of a family of five?

“We plead with the government  to listen to workers  and meet the  demands of labour .This is the way to go for workers to breathe,” he said.

The chairman noted that there is hardship in the land  and that  the per capital income had dropped drastically.

Mode-Adenipebi added: “The government must step up its game and make sure that the standard of living is elevated.

“We want to plead with the government  to consider not only the workers in the organiser sector  by increasing their salaries, but those who are not workers.

The chairman, however, urged  labour  to also fight for the welfare of workers not in the organised sector.

“The Nigerian workers should go beyond the organised sector. What is the labour doing to make sure that workers in this sector also live well?

“We still have many teachers with good degree certificates collecting N40,000 and below in private schools, factories and others.

“It is high time the NLC and TUC considered the highly oppressed workers out of the organised sector and defend them,” he said.

He urged the government to come up with policies to alleviate the hardships faced  by  workers out of the organised sector.

Despite earlier pleas by the government  for consideration, the organised labour on Monday declared an indefinite strike to push for a new national minimum wage for workers.

The industrial action, which has been suspended, followed a series of unsuccessful negotiations involving the the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and government’s representatives .

Representatives of labour had on May 28 walked out of the Tripartite Committee meeting on minimum wage after the government increased its offer from N57,000 to N60,000.

The government and the Organised Private Sector had initially proposed ₦48,000, then ₦54,000 and N57,000, which were all rejected by labour.

The organised labour had also proposed ₦615,000 as new minimum wage, but later came down to ₦497,000 and then to ₦494,000, to reflect the current rising cost of living.

Meanwhile, following the Federal Government expression of commitment to raising the proposed minimum wage of N60,000 at a meeting with labour leaders on Monday evening, the organised has just announced suspension of the industrial action for a week.

ZLP lauds NASS on old National Anthem

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has commended the National Assembly for passing the bill seeking to revert Nigeria to the old National Anthem.

The National Chairman, ZLP, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu said this when he spoke with newsmen on Monday in Abuja, calling on President Bola Tinubu to sign the bill into law.

Nwanyanwu, also the 2023 presidential candidate of the ZLP, said that the move was a right step in the right direction.

“The 1960 National Anthem touches on the very core of our diversity and religious complexities.

“I congratulate the National Assembly for passing the bill to repeal the current National Anthem and revert to the original National Anthem which commenced with the independence of Nigeria on Oct. 1, 1960.

“I feel vindicated by this noble act of the 10th National Assembly which was in complete consonance with my presidential manifesto for the 2023 presidential election where I vigorously canvassed for the return to Nigeria’s original National Anthem.

“What the National Assembly has done, has not only proved that it is sensitive to the yeaning’s of the people but it is also abundantly clear that there was no justifiable reason to have tampered with the 1960 National Anthem of Nigeria to the extent of replacing it with the current anthem,” he said.

Nwanyanwu said that the current national anthem does not reflect Nigeria’s diversity and yearning for unity as captured by the old anthem.

“Many countries have retained their National Anthem for several centuries as long as they existed as a nation,’’ he said.

He said that the National Anthem of a country was so symbolic saying that it was strange to see the military, repealed Nigeria’s cherished National Anthem by a fiat without consultation.

Nwanyanwu said that the old National Anthem evoked emotions and called for a united Nigeria where equity justice reigned supreme with no citizen oppressed or any section being preponderant over others with clear equality of citizens.

“Nigeria we hail thee, our own dear native land, though tribe and tongue may defer, In brotherhood we stand Nigerians all, and proud to serve our own sovereign motherland.

“This touches the very core of our diversity, and religious complexities; these are the reasons I gave when I canvassed for the reverting to the original National Anthem.

“I join all well-meaning Nigerians in commending the National Assembly and its leadership for their courage and patriotism in this regard.

“I urge Mr. President to waste no time assenting to this bill without delay and history will record the enactment of this landmark Act to his credit,” he said.

“We must remain the voices of our people and work for their betterment.

“As we choose our governor today let us bear this in mind, while he will be our torchbearer, he cannot achieve anything by himself he will need us. So we must all roll up our sleeves.

“The journey has begun and the work has started. No one can be a bystander and indeed no one should be a bystander. We must have all hands on deck.

“That is the only way we can achieve our desired result,” he said.

Why I abandoned my senatorial ambition – Akin Osuntokun

The newly-appointed Director General of the Labour Party, LP, presidential campaign council, Akin Osuntokun has stated reasons why he abandoned his Senatorial ambition for his new post.

Recall that Osuntokun was announced the DG of the LP campaign council on Tuesday, as took over from Doyin Okupe who resigned from the position after he was convicted for breaching the Money Laundering Act.

However, Osuntokun noted that he is still listed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as the senatorial candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, for Ekiti Central District, but now believes that his position as the campaign DG of LP is a ”higher order of priority.

The Ekiti-born politician made this known while granting interview on Channels Television during a programme Politics Today.

Asked if he had dropped his ambition, he answered, “I have abandoned it.”

“The campaign office has issued a press statement in that respect. What law have i breached in accepting the appointment?, What law has the presidential candidate who appointed me breached?” he asked.

“So, it is a redundant question at any rate. It is of no consequence at all, whether legally or constitutionally. There is no moral burden at all.

“It is a higher order of priority. As a citizen of this nation with a realistic appreciation of what we need to move Nigeria forward, you cannot compare an aspiration to be in the senate to the position I just occupied.

“I have no moral burden. I am moving to a higher sacrificial position. I don’t need to publicly declare it. I have the perfect freedom to decide what to do at any minute, as long I did not breach any legal position.

”The step I am taking is of the greater moral consequence for the country.”

  • 2023: Okowa’s kinsman, Okoh picks ZLP governorship ticket in Delta

Mr Emmanuel Okoh, from Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa’s kindred of Ika North East Local Government Area, has emerged the governorship candidate of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Delta.

The 37-year-old Okoh emerged the sole candidate of the party at the governorship primary election at the ZLP secretariat in Asaba on Wednesday.

Mr Emeka Nkwoala, the state Party Chairman and Chairman, Electoral Committee for the governorship primary, said that 75 delegates, three each from the 25 local government areas of the state, were accredited for the election.

He said that since Okoh was the sole aspirant for the position, the party, in line with the electoral guidelines and the constitution, adopted voice vote and the people affirmed his candidature.

“By the power conferred on me, and having screened the aspirant and found worthy, Mr Emmanuel Okoh, having satisfied all the conditions, is hereby declared the governorship candidate of ZLP for the 2023 general election in Delta,’’ he said.

On another Ika man of Delta North extraction planning to take over from his brother as governor, Nkwoala said politics was dynamic, adding that the trust was on capability and not about zoning.

He said that the issue of zoning the governorship seat was that of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Nkwoala added that from available statistics, all the senatorial districts in the state had taken their turns as governor and as such, it would not be out of place for Delta North to kick-start the rotation.

“ZLP is not interested in zoning, but anyone who would deliver dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

“This young man has what it takes to turn the economy of this state around for the good of the people. This is why we are fielding him to take over from Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa, his brother, come 2023,” he said.

Nkwoala called on people of the state to cast their votes for Okoh because he had the capacity to deliver, come 2023.

On his part, Okoh said that as a successful young businessman, he would deliver the dividends of good governance and turn the state economy around, for the benefit of all.

“I will come in my own capacity to do what God wants me do for my people.

“Yes, I am from Ika North East. I will take over from my brother, Gov. Okowa, to deepen development in the state,” he said.

The primary election was monitored by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agents and the media.

  • 2023: ZLP declares party’s tickets free for youths, women, PWDs

2023: ZLP declares party’s tickets free for youths, women, PWDs

The National Chairman of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Chief Dan Nwanyanwu says the party’s tickets for the 2023 general elections are free for youths, women and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

Nwanyanwu who made this known while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, said the aim was to allow credibility and popular people participate in elections.

He said the offer was also extended to minority ethnic groups in the various states who were often denied tickets in other parties.

The chairman said the initiative was to enable popular and credible candidates and very young people run for election in line with the Not-Too-Young-To-Run Act.

“We decided in our meeting last week to crash what is in tens of millions for nominations for political aspirants.

“We did this in the interest of the young people in Nigeria, we did this in the interest of women and PWDs.

“In our party, it now seems no more issue for you to run for election if you are popular and you have integrity,” he said.

The chairman said that though the ticket was now free, aspirants must be qualified and go through party scrutiny before flying the flag of the party.

According to him, ZLP wants to see a situation where an Idoma man will be governor in Benue, an Eggon man governor in Nasarawa and a Southern Kaduna man, governor in Kaduna state.

“If any of these groups can come together and present a credible candidate, we will encourage such person to get the ticket and run for state assembly, house of reps, senate, governor or president.

“We are now changing the trajectory, we are pushing people; we want to use this to inject more credible men into the system and carry everyone along.

“Enough of politicising on the Internet, a lot of young people are Internet tigers, come out and pick ticket and run and effect those changes all of us are clamouring for in Nigeria,” he said.

The chairman said that for aspirants outside the aforementioned categories, aspirants into state houses of assemblies are expected to pay N100,000 for intention form and N250,000 for nominations form.

He said aspirants interested in the house of reps are to pay N200,000 for intention form and N500,000 for nomination while the senate counterpart are to pay N500,000 and N1.5 million respectively.

For governorship aspirants, Nwanyanwu said that they are to pay N2 million for intention form and N10 million for nomination form.

Nwanyanwu said that presidential aspirants are to pay N5 million naira for intention form and N18 million for nomination form.
