BREAKING: Ex-Ondo Gov, Mimiko defects to PDP, takes entire ZLP along

Former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko has defected to his former political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Recall that Mimiko is the senatorial candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for Ondo Central District in the 2019 election.

Following Mimiko’s decision, stakeholders of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP from across the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State have resolved to join the PDP after a meeting held at his (Mimiko) residence in Ondo on Wednesday.

The meeting which has Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, former deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, his running mate, Gboye Adegbenro, former speaker, Jumoke Akindele, the state chairman of the party, Hon Joseph Akinlaja among other leaders in attendance resolved after deliberations to pitch their tent with the Peoples Democratic Party to rescue the country from the misrule of the APC and set her on a path of peace and progress for the benefit of all.

The meeting followed an earlier visit by four PDP governors led by chairman of their forum, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State. Okezie Ikpeazu, Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde had told the press after their meeting with Mimiko that they are in Ondo to invite Mimiko and his teeming supporters in the ZLP to the PDP.

The stakeholders meeting was called to discuss the meeting with the PDP governors and intimate members with the outcomes of a series of interactions with PDP leaders on the invitation extended to him.

Mimiko told the stakeholders that the ZLP is being invited to join the PDP to rescue the country from the brink of insecurity.

Stakeholders appraised developments across the nation and agreed that the PDP is the most viable platform to work with to be able to work towards winning future elections in the State and in the country as a whole.

Mimiko had earlier told members that leaders of the PDP have shown demonstrable commitment to fully integrate all willing joiners from the ZLP and accord them full membership rights in what promises to be a win for PDP members and Nigerians alike.

After detailed deliberations by leaders across Local Government Areas, Hon. Akinlaja, the State Chairman, asked that a motion moved for members of the ZLP in Ondo State to join the PDP be put to vote to which all present voted ‘yes’ by popular acclamation.

APC hails ZLP, others over defection in Oyo

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Oyo State Chapter, has praised members of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and loyalists of former Gov. Rasheed Ladoja for defecting to the APC on Tuesday in the state.

The party made the commendation in a statement signed by Mr Olawale Sadare, the Personal Assistant to the State APC Caretaker Chairman, Chief Akin Oke, on Thursday in Ibadan.

It blamed Gov. Seyi Makinde for the final collapse of the coalition arrangement upon which he got to power in 2019.

“It has again been confirmed that Oyo state is a divine project which is destined for success despite the setback suffered in 2019.

“All the major coalition partners have deserted Makinde for his failure to honour agreements and inability to perform in office as a worthy successor to Sen. Abiola Ajimobi,” the party stated.

The APC assured politicians from Ladoja’s camp and the ZLP that their decision to join the APC was a right decision taken and which would not be regretted.

“It was a necessary step to arrest the slide in participatory democracy and good governance being foisted again on the state by the PDP administration of Makinde.

“This bold step shall be reciprocated positively as we make bold to state that nobody shall be discriminated against as regards whether they are old or new APC members.

“It is even good that this is happening at the time our dear party is carrying out a nationwide membership registration and revalidation exercise,” the statement further noted.

The party expressed readiness to accommodate all the new members and get them registered accordingly in the 4,778 polling units across the state.

The APC said that the process of rescuing the state from the PDP has begun in earnest and no well-meaning stakeholder or member of the society will be left behind.

Oyo ZLP chapter, Ladoja’s group defect to APC

The Oyo State chapter of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and the former Gov. Rashidi Ladoja’s group have finally collapsed their structures into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made on Tuesday after a stakeholders meeting at the ZLP secretariat in Ibadan.

Speaking, Mr Kola Olaniyan, the state ZLP Chairman said the meeting was to inform members of the decision to move into the APC.

“It is just to inform them that we are now moving to APC as a group.

“Our leaders have held meetings with the APC and we are still on the meeting. We know it is going to pay us better than where the promise and fail.

“Without Ladoja, we cannot move to APC. It is with his knowledge that we took that decision,” he said.

He said the failure of PDP led administration in the state to fulfill its campaign promises necessitated the movement to the APC, saying the decision was supported by Ladoja.

Alhaji Kazeem Raji, representative of Ladoja Group, said the meeting was to consider their next political move that would be beneficial to their members and the state.

“We are here today to consider various deliberations held with different political parties with a view to joining anyone that will take care of the interest of their members.

“After judging from different political narratives and we have to choose the best out of the lots, APC remains the best political party to join today.

“As you can see, a motion was moved by the chairman of ZLP from Egbeda Local Government Area (LGA) of the state and was seconded by the chairman, ZLP from Atiba LGA to dissolve ZLP as well as Ladoja Group into APC,” he said.

Mr Kola Olabiyi, a party chieftain and former House of Representatives member said the failure of PDP to fulfill the 2019 coalition agreement necessitated their movement into APC.

He said that their movement into the APC was a better alternative than the 2019 coalition, saying it was a prosperous arrangement.

“The 2019 coalition came into being few days to the election and of course, this is not 2019 and election is still far, the registration is going on. Politics is a game of numbers.

“At the end of the day, everybody will move back to the ward, work and some of the agreement that we have reached, we will look at how it can best suit us.

“So, what we are trying to do now is to mobilise our members to register as members of this political party,” he said.

2023: APC, ZLP begin merger talks to ‘oust’ PDP’s Makinde

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Oyo State have commenced merger talks aimed at ousting the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Government of Seyi Makinde in 2023.

According to reports, the major stakeholders from both parties met at Premier Hotel in Ibadan on Friday.

The APC group was led by Chief Akin Oke, the State Caretaker Committee Chairman, while Alhaji Sharafadeen Alli, the 2019 ZLP Governorship candidate in the state led the ZLP team to the merger talk.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the coalition of ZLP, PDP, SDP, ADC and a faction of AD produced Makinde as governor of the state in 2019.

Mr Wale Ohu, Spokesperson of the APC group, said that both parties were at the meeting to deliberate on possible merger and future elections.

He said the meeting was to consult on how both parties could work together to ensure a better Oyo State.

“We discussed how to move this party forward, to move the state forward and the signals were very impressive.

“The ZLP symbolised by Ladoja group and the APC led by our own party chairman, Chief Akin Oke, are here for deliberation and consultation. That is why we are here.

“It was a nice one. We are looking at the possibility of working together as politicians that we have been in Oyo state.

“The faces are not new, we know ourselves.

“We look at the possibility of making Oyo State better if we can now work together. That is the paramount thing in our mind and that is the essence of the sitting.

“I think we are progressing. The meeting was a very nice one as old hands met, threw banters and we had consultations,” Ohu said.

He said the meeting was about the APC as a party which had former Gov. Adebayo Alao-Akala as a member and ZLP with former Gov. Rasheed Ladoja as a member.

Mr Adeolu Adeleke, Spokesperson of ZLP, confirmed the meeting, saying they were yet to take a precise decision.

He said they would in a couple of days, meet with the PDP too, saying they would belong to either the APC or PDP.

“This is a period of consultations. We are not members of PDP.

“We have met with APC at the state level. In a couple of days, we are going to meet with PDP also.

“The final decision will be taken on a particular party we will work with. So, we are just meeting ourselves.

“So, this will not be the last meeting, I can rightly say.

“One thing I can tell you on a good note is that at least for now, from human angle, and human perspective, it is either we belong to the PDP or APC at the end,” he said.

Adeleke declined comment on whether the meeting was approved by a former Governor of the state, Sen. Rashidi Ladoja.

He, however, affirmed that he would not engage in any meeting without the former governor’s consent.

“One thing that I can tell you authoritatively is that I can never engage myself in such a meeting without the consent of Sen. Rashidi Ladoja,” he said.

On the APC team were, Sen. Teslim Folarin (APC-Oyo Central), Segun Odebunmi (APC- Surulere/Ogo-Oluwa Federal Constituency), Akeem Adeyemi (APC-Oyo Federal Constituency) and Asimiyu Alarape.

Also on the APC delegation were, Mojeed Olaiya; the State APC Caretaker Secretary, Chief Lowo Obisesan, Dr Olusola Ayandele, Yinka Taiwo and Mr Olawale Sadare, amongst others.

Other stakeholders on the ZLP delegation were, Bimbo Adepoju, Waheed Akanbi, Alhaji Serifat Tanimowo, Mrs Monisola Tegbe, Idowu Olaniyan, Kazeem Raji and Mr Koyejo Oyetunde.

Ondo State Deputy Governor and Zenith Labour Party governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, cast his vote about 10.32 a.m at Apoi Ward II, Unit 004 in the 2020 Ondo governorship election.

Ajayi, who lauded the impressive turnout at his unit, said, “Ondo State people are ready to vote freely. In any contest, there must be a winner. They should have allowed the process to be free and fair.

“You can see the turnout that has been very encouraging here. But I want to also say that the way we have seen it here, the security arrangement is a bit compromised which is not exactly what happened in Edo State.

I want to appeal to the security agents to live up to expectation, be neutral, see that every Nigerian’s vote counts.

“INEC has put in place so many measures and I want to believe they are not also part of this conspiracy.”

Ondo 2020: PDP’s Jegede speaks on stepping down for ZLP candidate, Ajayi

Mr Eyitayo Jedege, the PDP governorship candidate in Ondo State, says he is still in the race, contrary to reports that he has stepped down for another candidate.

Jegede made the clarification in a statement made available to newsmen by the Spokesman of his campaign organisation, Mr. Gbenga Akinmoyo, on Thursday in Akure.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG, reports that the governorship election in Ondo State is scheduled for Oct. 10.

The governorship candidate told his supporters to disregard the rumour that he had collapsed his structure with that of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate, Mr Agboola Ajayi.

He described the rumour as part of the desperate move by his detractors to deceive the general public and distract his supporters.

Jegede said that he had meticulously worked to complete his campaign tour across the length and breadth of the state and held the closing rally at a colourful ceremony in Ondo West Local Government area on Wednesday.

“Thousands of supporters joined me at the ceremony to receive the PDP national officers from Abuja, led by the National Chairman, Uche Secondus.

“Several PDP governors and former governors, led by the Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Alhaji Aminu

Tambuwal and other party chieftains were also present at the rally,” he said.

Jegede added that in spite the tight campaign schedule, he was able to honour the invitations of the organisers of the two governorship debates to answer questions and address the electorate on his party’s manifestoes.

Jegede said he had also signed a peace accord to confirm his commitment to a violence-free election and plea to relevant authorities on the need to enjoy free, fair, transparent and credible election in the state, come Oct. 10.

Recall that INEC had earlier published the names of 17 governorship candidates and their running mates alongside their political parties.

The parties include the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and 15 other political parties.

Meanwhile out of the 17 candidates vying for the governorship position on Saturday, 16 are males and one female.

  • BREAKING: Ondo 2020: ZLP members defect to APC

BREAKING: Ondo 2020: ZLP members defect to APC

Some members of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Ondo State, on Monday, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure, ahead of the October 10 governorship election in the state.

The defectors were led by Mr Busayo Olamigoke, a former ZLP Chairman in Ondo East Local Government area, who recently resigned from the party.

Olamigoke, popularly called Bullet, came with some ZLP ward chairmen as well as ward youths and women leaders to the APC secretariat in Akure.

Welcoming the defectors, the APC Chairman in the state, Mr Ade Adetimehin, stated that ZLP’s fortune in the state had nosedived, with the collapse of its structure in Ondo East council area.

Adetimehin described the former ZLP chairman as ‘a notable politician and viable asset to any political party’, asking him and other defectors to go to ‘their wards and shine’.

“We don’t discriminate in APC. Your efforts and commitment to the party, particularly now that we are going into an election, will stand you out for recognition,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Olamigoke explained that they were moved by the achievements of Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in less than four years and their resolve to belong to the mainstream of the state politics.

The event was witnessed by the member representing Ondo East Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Mr Olumide Olajidi, and an APC chieftain from the council area, Chief Olabisi Johnson, among others.

  • APC exposes Mimiko’s third-term agenda

    APC exposes Mimiko’s third-term agenda

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that a former two-term governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko is plotting a third-term bid through Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Mr Yekini Nabena, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of APC made the allegation in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Nabena said that ZLP was one of the political parties contesting the forthcoming Oct. 10 Ondo State governorship election.

According to him “Mimiko was first elected as governor of Ondo State on the platform of Labour Party on Feb. 24, 2009.

“He contested as the Labour Party candidate and was re-elected on Oct. 20, 2012, for a second term in office, making him the first governor in Ondo State to win a second term election since 1999.

“He, however, later defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the end of his tenure as governor in February 24, 2017.”

Nabena while making the allegation, said: “A former two-term governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko is plotting a third-term bid surreptitiously through Zenith Labour Party”.

He said that Mimiko controlled the Zenith Labour Party as its sole administrator.

Nabena said that it was therefore, not surprising that the entire governorship campaign of the ZLP was centred around Mimiko rather than its supposed governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi.

“Perhaps, Mimiko deludes himself that the good people of Ondo State have forgotten how they were subjected to his arbitrary, tyrannical and dictatorial actions when he governed the state.

“It is on record how Mimiko factionalised his then political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for his political divide and rule tactics in the party and government,” Nabena said.

According to him, under Mimiko, government projects and patronage were distributed based on political servitude not priority needs of the state.

He said that this could be the reason most of his associates ditched him and were now front line leaders of the APC, in firm support of its candidate, Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu, the state’s incumbent governor.

Nabena said it was understandable that the ZLP’s governorship candidate had nothing substantial to campaign on after joining several political parties to purchase their governorship ticket to contest the Oct. 10 election in Ondo state.

“For us in the APC, the good governance credentials of our candidate, incumbent Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu is visible to all, particularly in the area of infrastructure, agriculture, human capital development, industry, and entrepreneurship, among others.

“This is the focus of our well received campaigns.

‘’Gov. Akeredolu’s first-term administration has ensured prudency, accountability, transparency and blocked leakages which has ultimately enhance good governance.

“Ondo State has witnessed unprecedented and massive infrastructural developments, culminating in over 300 kilometres of critical roads being constructed and rehabilitated,” Nabena said.

According to him, Ondo state is one of the model states that is successfully domesticating and implementing the diversification and agriculture drive of the APC government with over 6,000 trained “Agripreneurs”.

He said that the Ondo people had confidence in Gov. Akeredolu, who signed into law, a contributory health insurance scheme which enables all classes of people in the state have access to affordable health care services.

Nabena added that under Gov. Akeredolu, the people of Ondo state were better off and were poised to overwhelmingly return him to continue his administration’s good work, come Oct. 10.

  • Ondo 2020: Akeredolu, Mimiko trade words over guber poll

Ondo 2020: Akeredolu, Mimiko trade words over guber poll

The October 10, 2020 governorship election in Ondo State has become a tug-of-war between the incumbent governor and candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, and his predecessor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

With just 12 days to the guber poll, the cord of four decades’ old friendship is being strained by politics as Mimiko, who is the national leader of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), has pitched his tent with the current deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi.

Ajayi defiled all odds by ditching his boss and the APC to contest the poll under ZLP as a potent third force, with a rising popularity across the 3009 units, 203 wards and 18 councils of the state.

However, Governor Akeredolu feels unmoved by the alliance with his old friend and predecessor, Mimiko, whose association within ZLP he described as “spent force” and “a car without engine.”

His Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Donald Ojogo, argues that the outcome of the election would spell doom for the political career of the former governor.

According to Ojogo, “I think it will be a misplacement for anybody to even aver that the governor in his position as the APC governorship candidate feels threatened by the incessant onslaught by his friend and immediate predecessor since the campaign began. We do not believe that we have any reason to feel threatened. We also do not believe that the former governor, who today is the national leader of ZLP, has the capacity and ability to pose any threat to Governor Akeredolu. So many indices abound to also back up my argument.

“First, here is a man, who as a two-term governor and after spending eight years, could not muster enough goodwill to even install a successor. Here is a two-term governor, who after his inability to install a successor four years down the line, wanted to go to Senate, but couldn’t even secure victory in any of the local governments in the Central Senatorial zone.

“That shows that Mimiko, who today is a patron of the party, does not pose any threat to us. In any case, we understand his predicament; we understand his pains; we understand the reasons responsible for the onslaught.

But Mimiko fired back at a recent rally in the state, saying, “Your government is anti-people,” expressing disappointment over the performance of his successor.

Mimiko, while canvassing for votes for the ZLP governorship candidate and deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, at Ile-Oluji, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government Area of the state, at the weekend, said Akeredolu had inflicted much hardship on the people. He decried the cancellation of free health, social protection programmes like Mother and Child policy and increase in tuition fees in tertiary institutions in the state, just to mention a few.

The former governor noted that he had worked with three governors before becoming governor for eight years, stressing that the present administration has failed to deliver dividend of democracy to the people. According to him, the government of Akeredolu’s claim to performance is nothing but falsehood as all indices show otherwise.

According to him, “There is no person that will say he has not performed. But how do we differentiate performance? Any government that has not democratised education is a bad government. This government that hiked school fee is a bad government. Akeredolu’s government is an enemy of the people. Anybody that votes Akeredolu is selling his children’s future.

“Any government that does not make health free is your enemy. Akeredolu’s government is an enemy of the people by cancelling mother and child and free health for children. Any time they come here to campaign for votes ask him, ‘where is our shuttle buses? Where is our abiye?’ The government that cancelled trauma centre is your enemy.”

The former governor bemoaned the failure of his successor and the APC-led government to build on the successes recorded in the health and education sectors during his tenure as governor. Mimiko also expressed dismay at the cancellation of the accident emergency scheme, which was established by his administration to reduce the number of deaths on express roads around Ondo State.

He urged the people to vote out APC and Akeredolu-led government by voting for Ajayi and his running mate, Gboye Adegbenro as governor and deputy governor on the platform of the ZLP.

But the Special Assistant to Governor Akeredolu on New Media, Mr. Olabode Olatunde, retorted to Mimiko’s claims thus, “It’s on record that Governor Akeredolu, since inception in office, has not sacked anyone in the state workforce, either at the local or state level. It’s unfortunate that a governor that sacked over 10,000 workers in Ondo Atate is calling the Akeredolu-led administration an anti-people government.

“Those lecturers that were sacked unjustly at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, are still alive to bear witness to the anti-people government of Mimiko in this state.

“These workers were only reinstated by Governor Akeredolu. Because of politics, Mimiko killed the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OAUSTECH). What’s more anti-people than the actions of Mimiko in abandoning the various projects left behind by the late Olusegun Agagu?

“The Akeredolu administration came and realised Mimiko only had two Mother and Child hospitals in the state. Governor Akeredolu has now expanded from two to seven and they are now across the three senatorial district of the state.

“As we speak, work is ongoing at the Teaching Hospital, both in Ondo and Akure. Akeredolu has introduced the Contributory Health Scheme, which has also brought about free health care service for children under the age of five and pregnant women.

“So, on health, Governor Akeredolu has surpassed Mimiko in achievements, just as the Akeredolu administration has recorded significant stride in education and people’s welfare.”
