Expert wants FG data hosted in Nigeria; FG bans hosting govt websites outside Nigeria

The Managing Director of Rack Centre, Mr. Tunde Coker, has called on the federal government (FG) to return its data from foreign countries, and host them in Nigeria.

Mr. Coker made the call at the NITEC 2017 event that held recently in Lagos.

The Rack Centre boss, who believes the Nigerian capability can innovate to deliver world class, said the infrastructures are in place to cater for big data in the country.

He said, in tune with the Made in Nigeria campaign, and in other not to enthrone mediocrity in the country, it would be better if the FG bring back its data to the country; stressing that this would have a turnaround effect on the economy.

Mr. Coker also stated that Rack Centre provides data storage services comparable with those in developed countries of the world.

Meanwhile, the FG said it has banned all Nigerian government websites from being hosted outside the country.

The ban is contained amongst the guidelines on Nigerian government websites by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

The use of “.gov.ng” domain names across all government websites is also stated in the NITDA guidelines to ensure uniformity and compliance with industry best practices, Technology Times reports.

The report also says NITDA will be reviewing the guidelines to improve “the quality, reliability, accuracy, and accessibility of online information pertaining to government institutions at all levels of government and to ensure a consistent experience for all users”.
