ICT University set to kick off in September

According to information reaching the office of TheNewsGuru, the proposed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) University is well set to kick off in September this year.

This is following the receipt of the report of the ICT University Implementation committee by the Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu.

The communications Minister upon receiving the report said he would study it and that within three weeks, a memo would be raised for the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

He added that as soon as FEC gives approval, the University would take off by September, 2017, adding that he would recommend to the FEC some of the committee members to be considered as Foundation Staff of the Proposed University.

He also said a recommendation would also be sent to the FEC to appreciate members of the Committee by issuing letters of recognition for their contribution.

The minister said the choice of the Vice Chancellor would be based on professionalism, competence and entrepreneurial ship which he would extend his search globally, however, any member of the Committee that is well qualified would be given first right of refusal.

On the funding of the University, the minister said that it would be funded by the private sector PPP arrangement, the government’s part was to make the infrastructure available.

Submitting the report, the Chairman of the Committee and the immediate past Executive Secretary of the Nigerian University Commission, Prof Julius Okojie said that his members were committed and did a painstaking job to meet up with the six weeks deadline given by the minister and that they all looked at it as a National Assignment.

He added that part of the recommendations was that the University would run a College System with 3 Colleges on its inception, namely Information Technology, Applied Technology and Society and Security Technology.

Prof. Okojie said part of the plan was that students could study from any part of the university without being restricted by walls.

It could be recalled that on June 1st 2017, theHonourable Minister inaugurated the Implementation Committee of the proposed ICT University of Nigeria.
